The SmokeHow to read the Hangul
الرَّحْمَٰنِ르r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀
- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

beginning the Christ salvation
- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
The surah opens with Ha Mim and an oath by the clear Book, saying it was sent down on a blessed night in which every wise matter is made distinct. It tells people to watch for the Day when the sky brings a visible smoke that envelops them, and warns of those who promise to believe if the punishment is lifted, only to turn back again. It then recounts the messenger who asked Pharaoh to hand over God's servants, the Children of Israel leaving by night through a parted sea, and Pharaoh's army drowning while leaving behind gardens, springs and fine dwellings; the sky and earth, it says, shed no tears over them. Those who deny resurrection are reminded of the people of Tubba, who were destroyed. The heavens and earth were not created as a pastime, and the surah closes by contrasting the sinner fed from the tree of Zaqqum with the God-fearing, secure among gardens and springs.

-
1
Ha Mim.
-
2
By the clear Book!
-
3
We sent it down on a blessed night. We have always been warning.
-
4
In it every wise matter is made distinct,
-
5
as a command from Us. We have always been sending [messengers],
-
6
a mercy proceeding from your Lord; truly He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing,
-
7
the Lord of the heavens, the earth, and everything between them — if you are truly certain.
-
8
There is no god except Him; He brings to life and brings death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your earliest forefathers.
-
9
Yet they are in doubt, amusing themselves.
-
10
So watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke,
-
11
enveloping the people. This is a painful punishment.
-
12
"Our Lord, remove the punishment from us; we are believers."
-
13
How can they take heed now, when a clear messenger had already come to them?
-
14
Then they turned away from him and said, "Taught [by others], a madman."
-
15
We will remove the punishment for a little while, [but] you will surely return [to disbelief].
-
16
The Day We strike with the greatest onslaught, We will surely take retribution.
-
17
Before them We tested the people of Pharaoh, and a noble messenger came to them,
-
18
[saying], "Hand over to me the servants of God. I am to you a trustworthy messenger.
-
19
Do not set yourselves above God. I bring you a manifest authority.
-
20
And I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me.
-
21
And if you do not believe me, then leave me alone."
-
22
So he cried out to his Lord, "These people are criminals."
-
23
"Then set out with My servants by night; you will surely be pursued.
-
24
And leave the sea parted and still. They are an army to be drowned."
-
25
How many gardens and springs they left behind,
-
26
and crops and noble dwellings,
-
27
and comforts in which they used to delight!
-
28
Thus it was. And We made another people inherit them.
-
29
The sky and the earth shed no tears over them, and they were given no reprieve.
-
30
And We saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment,
-
31
from Pharaoh. He was arrogant, one of the excessive.
-
32
And We chose them, knowingly, above all the worlds.
-
33
And We gave them signs in which there was a clear trial.
-
34
These [people] say,
-
35
"There is nothing but our first death, and we will not be raised again.
-
36
Then bring back our forefathers, if you are truthful."
-
37
Are they better, or the people of Tubba and those before them? We destroyed them, for they were guilty.
-
38
It was not as a pastime that We created the heavens, the earth, and everything between them.
-
39
We created them only with truth, but most of them do not know.
-
40
The Day of Decision is the appointed time for all of them,
-
41
the Day when no ally will avail an ally in anything, nor will they be helped,
-
42
except those on whom God has mercy. He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful.
-
43
The tree of Zaqqum
-
44
is the food of the sinner,
-
45
like molten metal, boiling in the bellies,
-
46
like the boiling of scalding water.
-
47
"Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Blaze.
-
48
Then drench his head with the torment of boiling water."
-
49
"Taste! You are indeed the mighty, the noble!"
-
50
"This is what you used to doubt."
-
51
The God-fearing will be in a secure place,
-
52
amid gardens and springs,
-
53
wearing fine silk and rich brocade, facing one another.
-
54
Thus it will be. And We will pair them with companions with large, beautiful eyes.
-
55
There they will call for every kind of fruit, in security.
-
56
They will not taste death there, except the first death, and He will have protected them from the punishment of the Blaze,
-
57
as a bounty from your Lord. That is the supreme triumph.
-
58
We have made it easy in your tongue so that they may take heed.
-
59
So watch and wait; they too are watching and waiting.
