- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
The surah opens with oaths by the Mount, a Book inscribed on unrolled parchment, the much-frequented House, the raised canopy and the swelling sea, declaring that the punishment of the Lord will surely come. It describes the Day when the sky sways and mountains move away, and deniers are shoved into the fire of Hell. In contrast, the God-fearing rest in gardens, their believing offspring are joined with them, and they recall to one another how they once lived in fear among their families. The surah then answers those who call the Messenger a fortune-teller, a madman or a poet with a rapid series of questions: were they created from nothing, or are they the creators? Did they create the heavens and the earth? Do they hold the Lord's treasures? It ends by telling the Prophet to wait patiently for his Lord's decision, knowing he is under God's eyes, and to glorify Him at night and as the stars fade.
- Oaths at the opening
- Inescapable punishment
- Families united in the Garden
- A series of challenges
- Patience and praise
The name It is named after the Mount, by which the oath in verse 1 is sworn.
-
1
By the Mount,
-
2
and a Book inscribed
-
3
on unrolled parchment,
-
4
and the much-frequented House,
-
5
and the raised canopy,
-
6
and the swelling sea!
-
7
The punishment of your Lord will surely come to pass;
-
8
there is none to avert it,
-
9
on the Day the sky will sway violently
-
10
and the mountains will move away entirely.
-
11
So woe that Day to the deniers,
-
12
who amuse themselves in idle talk,
-
13
the Day they will be shoved forcefully into the fire of Hell:
-
14
"This is the Fire which you used to deny.
-
15
Is this sorcery, or do you not see?
-
16
Burn in it. Whether you endure patiently or not, it is all the same for you. You are only being repaid for what you used to do."
-
17
The God-fearing will be in gardens and bliss,
-
18
enjoying what their Lord has given them, and their Lord has protected them from the punishment of the Blaze.
-
19
"Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do."
-
20
Reclining on couches lined up in rows, and We will pair them with companions with large, beautiful eyes.
-
21
And those who believed and whose offspring followed them in faith, We will join with them their offspring, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds. Every person is held in pledge for what he has earned.
-
22
And We will provide them with fruit and meat, whatever they desire.
-
23
There they will pass to one another a cup in which there is no idle talk and no sin.
-
24
And there will circulate among them young servants of theirs, as if they were hidden pearls.
-
25
And they will turn to one another, asking each other.
-
26
They will say, "Before, when we were among our families, we were fearful.
-
27
So God was gracious to us and protected us from the punishment of the scorching wind.
-
28
We used to call upon Him before. He is the Most Kind, the Most Merciful."
-
29
Keep on reminding, then, for by your Lord's grace you are no fortune-teller and no madman.
-
30
Or do they say, "A poet, for whom we await a misfortune of time"?
-
31
Say, "Wait, for I am waiting with you."
-
32
Or do their minds command them to [say] this, or are they a transgressing people?
-
33
Or do they say, "He has made it up"? Rather, they do not believe.
-
34
If they are telling the truth, then let them bring a discourse of the same kind.
-
35
Were they made out of nothing at all, or are they the ones who create?
-
36
Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain.
-
37
Do they hold your Lord's treasures? Or are they in control?
-
38
Or do they have a ladder by which they listen? Then let their listener produce a clear authority.
-
39
Or does He have daughters while you have sons?
-
40
Or do you ask them for a payment, so that they are burdened with debt?
-
41
Is the unseen in their possession, so that they record it?
-
42
Or do they intend a plot? But those who disbelieve are the ones caught in the plot.
-
43
Or do they have a god other than God? Glory be to God above whatever they associate [with Him]!
-
44
And if they saw a fragment of the sky falling, they would say, "Clouds heaped up."
-
45
So leave them until they meet their Day in which they will be struck down,
-
46
the Day their plotting will avail them nothing, nor will they be helped.
-
47
And for those who do wrong there is a punishment before that, but most of them do not know.
-
48
So be patient for the decision of your Lord, for you are under Our eyes. And glorify the praise of your Lord when you arise,
-
49
and glorify Him in part of the night and at the fading of the stars.
