The MoonHow to read the Hangul
الرَّحْمَٰنِ르r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀
- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
The surah begins, “The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split apart,” and describes people who see a sign yet turn away calling it ongoing magic. It pictures the Day when people come out of their graves like scattered locusts, rushing toward the caller, and then retells in brief succession the fates of earlier peoples. Noah is saved from the flood on a vessel of planks and nails; Ad is struck by a howling, icy wind; Thamud hamstring the she-camel sent as a test and are destroyed by a single blast; Lot's people are hit by a storm of stones while his family is saved before dawn; and Pharaoh's people deny all the signs. Between the accounts a refrain repeats: “We have made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will take heed?” The surah states that God created everything in due measure and that every deed, small or great, is recorded, and closes with the God-fearing among gardens and rivers.

The name It is named after verse 1, which says that the moon has split apart.
-
1
The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split apart.
-
2
Yet whenever they see a sign, they turn away and say, "Ongoing magic!"
-
3
They denied and followed their own desires, but every matter will reach its settled end.
-
4
There has already come to them news containing a deterrent,
-
5
far-reaching wisdom — but warnings are of no avail.
-
6
So turn away from them. On the Day the caller calls to something terrible,
-
7
with eyes downcast they will come out of the graves as if they were scattered locusts,
-
8
rushing toward the caller. The disbelievers will say, "This is a hard day."
-
9
Before them the people of Noah denied. They denied Our servant and said, "A madman!" and he was driven off with threats.
-
10
So he called upon his Lord, "I am overcome, so help [me]!"
-
11
So We opened the gates of the sky with pouring water,
-
12
and made the earth burst forth with springs, and the waters met for a matter already decreed.
-
13
And We carried him on a [vessel] of planks and nails,
-
14
sailing under Our eyes — a recompense for one who had been rejected.
-
15
We left it behind as a sign; then is there anyone who will remember?
-
16
Then how [severe] were My punishment and My warnings!
-
17
And We have made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will take heed?
-
18
Ad denied. Then how [severe] were My punishment and My warnings!
-
19
We sent against them a howling, icy wind on a day of continuous misfortune,
-
20
plucking people away as if they were trunks of uprooted palm trees.
-
21
Then how [severe] were My punishment and My warnings!
-
22
And We have made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will take heed?
-
23
Thamud denied the warnings.
-
24
They said, "Are we to follow a single human being from among us? Then we would truly be in error and madness.
-
25
Has the reminder been sent down to him out of all of us? No, he is an insolent liar."
-
26
They will learn tomorrow which one is the arrogant liar.
-
27
"We are sending the she-camel as a test for them, so watch them and be patient.
-
28
And inform them that the water is to be divided between them, each [party] coming to drink in its turn."
-
29
But they called their companion, and he took [the sword] and hamstrung [her].
-
30
Then how [severe] were My punishment and My warnings!
-
31
We sent against them a single blast, and they became like the dry stubble of a fence-builder.
-
32
And We have made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will take heed?
-
33
The people of Lot denied the warnings.
-
34
We sent against them a storm of stones, except the family of Lot; We saved them before dawn,
-
35
a blessing from Us. That is how We repay those who give thanks.
-
36
He had cautioned them about Our mighty grip, but they cast doubt on the warnings.
-
37
They even demanded his guests from him, so We blotted out their eyes: "Taste My punishment and My warnings!"
-
38
And early in the morning a lasting punishment overtook them.
-
39
"Taste My punishment and My warnings!"
-
40
And We have made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will take heed?
-
41
The warnings also came to the people of Pharaoh.
-
42
They denied all of Our signs, so We seized them with the seizing of One Almighty, All-Powerful.
-
43
Are your disbelievers better than those, or do you have an exemption in the scriptures?
-
44
Or do they say, "We are a united host, able to defend ourselves"?
-
45
The host will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in flight].
-
46
No, the Hour is their appointed time, and the Hour is more calamitous and more bitter.
-
47
Indeed the wicked are in error and madness.
-
48
On the Day they are dragged into the Fire on their faces, [it will be said], "Taste the touch of Saqar!"
-
49
Indeed We have created everything in due measure.
-
50
And Our command is but a single [word], like the blink of an eye.
-
51
And We have destroyed your like before. So is there anyone who will take heed?
-
52
And everything they have done is in the records.
-
53
And every matter, small and great, is written down.
-
54
Indeed the God-fearing will be among gardens and rivers,
-
55
in a seat of truth, in the presence of a Sovereign, All-Powerful.
