الرَّحْمَٰنِ르r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀
- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
Classified as revealed in the Medinan period, this surah opens with the hypocrites coming to the Messenger and testifying that he is God's Messenger, while God testifies that the hypocrites are liars. They are described as using their oaths as a shield, as impressive in appearance and speech yet like propped-up timbers, and as turning their heads away in arrogance when invited to have the Messenger ask forgiveness for them. The surah quotes their words: that nothing should be given to those around the Messenger until they drift away, and that on returning to Medina the more honourable would expel the more humble. It answers that honour belongs to God, His Messenger and the believers. Finally it urges believers not to let wealth and children distract them from God, and to spend before death arrives and it is too late to ask for delay.
- False testimony of hypocrites
- Oaths used as shields
- Propped-up timbers

The name It is named after the hypocrites, whose words and conduct are its subject from the first verse onward.
-
1
When the hypocrites come to you, they say, "We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of God." God knows that you are indeed His Messenger, and God bears witness that the hypocrites are liars.
-
2
They have taken their oaths as a shield and so turned [people] away from the way of God. Evil indeed is what they used to do.
-
3
That is because they believed and then disbelieved, so their hearts were sealed, and they do not comprehend.
-
4
When you see them, their figures impress you; and when they speak, you listen to their speech. [Yet] they are like propped-up timbers. They think every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May God destroy them! How are they deluded?
-
5
And when it is said to them, "Come, the Messenger of God will ask forgiveness for you," they turn their heads aside, and you see them turning away in arrogance.
-
6
It is the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; God will never forgive them. Indeed God does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
-
7
It is they who say, "Give nothing to those around God's Messenger, until they drift away." Yet the treasures of the heavens and the earth belong to God, though the hypocrites fail to understand.
-
8
They say, "If we return to Medina, the more honourable will surely expel the more humble from it." But honour belongs to God and to His Messenger and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know.
-
9
O you who believe, do not let your wealth or your children divert you from the remembrance of God. And whoever does that — they are the losers.
-
10
And spend from what We have provided you before death comes to one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a short while, then I would give in charity and be among the righteous."
-
11
But God will never delay a soul when its time has come. And God is fully aware of what you do.
