Surah
About this surah
This surah is classified as revealed in the Medinan period. It opens by asking the Prophet why he forbade himself what God had made lawful, seeking to please his wives, and states that God has provided for the release of oaths. It then mentions a secret the Prophet confided to one of his wives that was disclosed, urges the two wives involved to repent, and declares that God, Gabriel, the righteous believers and the angels are his supporters. Next it calls on the believers to shield themselves and their families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, and to turn to God in sincere repentance. It closes with examples: the wives of Noah and Lot, who betrayed righteous husbands, as an example for disbelievers, and the wife of Pharaoh and Mary, daughter of Imran, as an example for believers.

1
O Prophet, why do you forbid [yourself] what God has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
2
God has already ordained for you the dissolution of your oaths. And God is your Protector, and He is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.
-
3
And [remember] when the Prophet confided a matter to one of his wives; then when she disclosed it and God revealed it to him, he made known part of it and passed over part. Then when he told her about it, she said, "Who told you this?" He said, "The All-Knowing, the All-Aware told me."
-
4
If you two turn to God in repentance — for your hearts have indeed deviated — [it is best for you]; but if you support each other against him, then indeed God is his Protector, and Gabriel and the righteous among the believers, and the angels after that are [his] supporters.
-
5
Perhaps his Lord, if he divorced you [all], would give him in exchange wives better than you — submitting [to God], believing, devoutly obedient, repentant, worshipping, given to fasting — previously married and virgins.
-
6
Believers, shield yourselves and your families from a Fire fueled by people and stones, guarded by harsh and stern angels who never disobey God in anything He orders them, and who carry out whatever they are ordered.
-
7
O you who disbelieve, make no excuses today. You are only being repaid for what you used to do.
-
8
O you who believe, turn to God in sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, on the Day when God will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light will run ahead of them and on their right; they will say, "Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed You have power over all things."
-
9
O Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be stern with them. Their refuge is Hell, and what a wretched destination!
-
10
God sets forth an example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were under two of Our righteous servants, but they betrayed them, so [their husbands] could not avail them at all against God, and it was said, "Enter the Fire with those who enter."
-
11
And God sets forth an example for those who believe: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, "My Lord, build for me near You a house in the Garden, and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds, and save me from the wrongdoing people."
-
12
And Mary, Imran's daughter, who kept herself chaste; We breathed into it from Our spirit, and she affirmed the truth of her Lord's words and His scriptures, and was one of the devout.
