- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
This surah is classified as revealed in the Meccan period. It opens by asking three times what the Inevitable Reality is, then recalls those who denied it: Thamud, destroyed by an overwhelming blast; Ad, destroyed by an icy wind that blew for seven nights and eight days; Pharaoh and the overturned cities; and the flood, from which people were carried in the ship. It then describes the Day when the Trumpet sounds once, the earth and mountains are crushed, and the sky splits open. Whoever receives his record in his right hand will rejoice and enter a lofty Garden, while whoever receives it in his left hand will lament that neither wealth nor authority helped him, and will be cast into Hellfire. The surah ends with an oath that this is not the speech of a poet or a soothsayer but a revelation from the Lord of all the worlds and the certain truth.

- Revelation, not poetry
The name The name comes from verses 1-3, which open by repeating the phrase 'the Inevitable Reality' and asking what it is.
-
1
The Inevitable Reality!
-
2
What is the Inevitable Reality?
-
3
And what will make you know what the Inevitable Reality is?
-
4
Thamud and Ad denied the Striking Calamity.
-
5
As for Thamud, they were destroyed by the overwhelming [blast].
-
6
And as for Ad, they were destroyed by a furious, icy, howling wind,
-
7
which He imposed on them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so that you would see the people lying fallen in it as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.
-
8
Then do you see any remnant of them?
-
9
And Pharaoh came, and those before him, and the overturned cities, with sin.
-
10
They disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with an ever-increasing grip.
-
11
Indeed, when the water overflowed, We carried you in the sailing ship,
-
12
so that We might make it a reminder for you and that retaining ears might retain it.
-
13
So when the Trumpet is blown with a single blast,
-
14
and the earth and the mountains are lifted and crushed with a single crushing,
-
15
then on that Day the Event will befall,
-
16
and the sky will split open, for on that Day it will be frail.
-
17
And the angels will be at its edges, and above them, on that Day, eight will bear the Throne of your Lord.
-
18
On that Day you will be exposed; no secret of yours will remain hidden.
-
19
As for the one who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!
-
20
Indeed I was certain that I would meet my account."
-
21
So he will be in a pleasing life,
-
22
in a lofty Garden,
-
23
its fruits hanging near.
-
24
"Eat and drink with satisfaction for what you sent ahead in days gone by."
-
25
But as for the one who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record,
-
26
and had not known what my account is!
-
27
Oh, I wish it had been the end!
-
28
My wealth has not availed me.
-
29
My authority has vanished from me."
-
30
"Seize him and shackle him,
-
31
then burn him in Hellfire,
-
32
then thrust him into a chain whose length is seventy cubits."
-
33
Indeed he did not believe in God, the Most Great,
-
34
nor did he urge the feeding of the poor.
-
35
So there is no devoted friend for him here today,
-
36
nor any food except from the discharge of wounds,
-
37
which none eat except the sinners.
-
38
So I swear by what you see,
-
39
and what you do not see,
-
40
[that] it is indeed the word of a noble messenger,
-
41
it is not the speech of a poet — how little you believe!
-
42
Nor is it the word of a soothsayer; little do you take heed.
-
43
[It is] a revelation sent down from the Lord of all the worlds.
-
44
And had he fabricated against Us some sayings,
-
45
We would have seized him by the right hand,
-
46
then We would have cut his life artery,
-
47
and not one of you could have shielded him.
-
48
And indeed it is a reminder for the God-fearing.
-
49
And indeed We know that among you are deniers.
-
50
And indeed it will be a cause of regret for the disbelievers.
-
51
And indeed it is the certain truth.
-
52
So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
