How to read the Hangul

الرَّحْمَٰنِ르^r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀

• 비Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
• 마Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
• 스Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
• ^r라Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

How to read the Hangul

• 기Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
• 닝Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
• 트Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
• 더Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
• ^f팬Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

About this surah

This surah is classified as revealed in the Medinan period. It asks whether there was not a time when man was nothing worth mentioning, and says God created him from a drop of mingled fluid, gave him hearing and sight, and showed him the way, whether he would be grateful or ungrateful. It then portrays the righteous: they fulfil their vows and, despite their own love for it, give food to the poor, the orphan and the captive, seeking neither reward nor thanks, only out of fear of a grim Day. Their reward in the Garden is described at length, with silk garments, silver vessels, a cup mixed with ginger and a spring named Salsabil. The final verses state that the Quran was sent down in stages, urge patience and remembrance of the Lord morning, evening and through the night, and say that whoever wills may take a way to his Lord.

The name The name comes from verse 1, which asks whether there was a time when man (humankind) was nothing to be mentioned.

   وَيُطْعِمُونَ와유뜨이무낫 الطَّعَامَ따아마 عَلَىٰ알라 حُبِّهِ훕비히 مِسْكِينًا미스키난 وَيَتِيمًا와야티만 وَأَسِيرًا와아시^r라

   إِنَّمَا인나마 نُطْعِمُكُمْ누뜨이무쿰 لِوَجْهِ리와즈힐 اللَّهِ라히 لَا라 نُرِيدُ누^r리두 مِنْكُمْ민쿰 جَزَاءً자자안 وَلَا왈라 شُكُورًا슈쿠^r라

    فَوَقَاهُمُ^f파와까후물 اللَّهُ라후 شَرَّ샤르^r라 ذَٰلِكَ^ð달리칼 الْيَوْمِ야우미 وَلَقَّاهُمْ왈락까훔 نَضْرَةً나드^r라탄 وَسُرُورًا와수^r루^r라

    وَجَزَاهُمْ와자자훔 بِمَا비마 صَبَرُوا사바^r루 جَنَّةً잔나탄 وَحَرِيرًا와하^r리^r라

    مُتَّكِئِينَ뭇타키이나 فِيهَا^f피하 عَلَى알랄 الْأَرَائِكِ아^r라이키 ۖ لَا라 يَرَوْنَ야^r라우나 فِيهَا^f피하 شَمْسًا샴산 وَلَا왈라 زَمْهَرِيرًا잠하^r리^r라

    وَدَانِيَةً와다니야탄 عَلَيْهِمْ알라이힘 ظِلَالُهَا^ð딜랄루하 وَذُلِّلَتْ와^ð둘릴라트 قُطُوفُهَا꾸뚜^f푸하 تَذْلِيلًا타^ð들릴라

    وَيَطُوفُ와야뚜^f푸 عَلَيْهِمْ알라이힘 وِلْدَانٌ윌다눔 مُخَلَّدُونَ무칼라두나 إِذَا이^ð다 رَأَيْتَهُمْ^r라아이타훔 حَسِبْتَهُمْ하십타훔 لُؤْلُؤًا루을루암 مَنْثُورًا만^θ수^r라

    وَإِذَا와이^ð다 رَأَيْتَ^r라아이타 ثَمَّ^θ삼마 رَأَيْتَ^r라아이타 نَعِيمًا나이만 وَمُلْكًا와물칸 كَبِيرًا카비^r라

    عَالِيَهُمْ알리야훔 ثِيَابُ^θ시야부 سُنْدُسٍ순두신 خُضْرٌ쿠드^r룬 وَإِسْتَبْرَقٌ와이스타브^r라꾼 ۖ وَحُلُّوا와훌루 أَسَاوِرَ아사위^r라 مِنْ민 فِضَّةٍ^f핏다틴 وَسَقَاهُمْ와사까훔 رَبُّهُمْ^r랍부훔 شَرَابًا샤^r라반 طَهُورًا따후^r라

    إِنَّ인나 هَٰذَا하^ð다 كَانَ카나 لَكُمْ라쿰 جَزَاءً자자안 وَكَانَ와카나 سَعْيُكُمْ사으유쿰 مَشْكُورًا마시쿠^r라

    إِنَّا인나 نَحْنُ나흐누 نَزَّلْنَا낫잘나 عَلَيْكَ알라이칼 الْقُرْآنَ꾸^r르아나 تَنْزِيلًا탄질라

    فَاصْبِرْ^f파스비^r르 لِحُكْمِ리후크미 رَبِّكَ^r랍비카 وَلَا왈라 تُطِعْ투띠으 مِنْهُمْ민훔 آثِمًا아^θ시만 أَوْ아우 كَفُورًا카^f푸^r라

    وَاذْكُرِ와^ð드쿠^r리 اسْمَ스마 رَبِّكَ^r랍비카 بُكْرَةً부크^r라탄 وَأَصِيلًا와아실라

    وَمِنَ와미날 اللَّيْلِ라일리 فَاسْجُدْ^f파스주드 لَهُ라후 وَسَبِّحْهُ와삽비흐후 لَيْلًا라일란 طَوِيلًا따윌라

    إِنَّ인나 هَٰؤُلَاءِ하울라이 يُحِبُّونَ유힙부날 الْعَاجِلَةَ아질라타 وَيَذَرُونَ와야^ð다^r루나 وَرَاءَهُمْ와^r라아훔 يَوْمًا야우만 ثَقِيلًا^θ사낄라

    نَحْنُ나흐누 خَلَقْنَاهُمْ칼라끄나훔 وَشَدَدْنَا와샤다드나 أَسْرَهُمْ아스^r라훔 ۖ وَإِذَا와이^ð다 شِئْنَا시으나 بَدَّلْنَا밧달나 أَمْثَالَهُمْ암^θ살라훔 تَبْدِيلًا탑딜라

    إِنَّ인나 هَٰذِهِ하^ð디히 تَذْكِرَةٌ타^ð드키^r라툰 ۖ فَمَنْ^f파만 شَاءَ샤앗 اتَّخَذَ타카^ð다 إِلَىٰ일라 رَبِّهِ^r랍비히 سَبِيلًا사빌라

    وَمَا와마 تَشَاءُونَ타샤우나 إِلَّا일라 أَنْ안 يَشَاءَ야샤알 اللَّهُ라후 ۚ إِنَّ인날 اللَّهَ라하 كَانَ카나 عَلِيمًا알리만 حَكِيمًا하키마

    يُدْخِلُ유드킬루 مَنْ만 يَشَاءُ야샤우 فِي^f피 رَحْمَتِهِ^r라흐마티히 ۚ وَالظَّالِمِينَ왓^ð달리미나 أَعَدَّ아앗다 لَهُمْ라훔 عَذَابًا아^ð다반 أَلِيمًا알리마
