HumankindHow to read the Hangul
الرَّحْمَٰنِ르r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀
- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

About this surah
This surah is classified as revealed in the Medinan period. It asks whether there was not a time when man was nothing worth mentioning, and says God created him from a drop of mingled fluid, gave him hearing and sight, and showed him the way, whether he would be grateful or ungrateful. It then portrays the righteous: they fulfil their vows and, despite their own love for it, give food to the poor, the orphan and the captive, seeking neither reward nor thanks, only out of fear of a grim Day. Their reward in the Garden is described at length, with silk garments, silver vessels, a cup mixed with ginger and a spring named Salsabil. The final verses state that the Quran was sent down in stages, urge patience and remembrance of the Lord morning, evening and through the night, and say that whoever wills may take a way to his Lord.

The name The name comes from verse 1, which asks whether there was a time when man (humankind) was nothing to be mentioned.
-
1
Has there [not] come upon man a period of time when he was nothing to be mentioned?
-
2
Indeed We created man from a drop of mingled fluid to test him, so We made him hearing and seeing.
-
3
Indeed We guided him to the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful.
-
4
For the disbelievers We have readied chains, iron collars, and a blazing Fire.
-
5
Indeed the righteous will drink from a cup whose mixture is of camphor,
-
6
a spring from which the servants of God drink, making it gush forth abundantly.
-
7
They fulfil their vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread,
-
8
and they give food, despite their love for it, to the poor, the orphan and the captive,
-
9
[saying], "We feed you only for the sake of God. We want from you neither reward nor thanks.
-
10
Indeed we fear from our Lord a Day, grim and distressful."
-
11
God will therefore shield them from the harm of that Day and bestow on them brightness and delight,
-
12
and reward them for their patience with a Garden and silk,
-
13
reclining therein on couches. They will see therein neither [scorching] sun nor bitter cold.
-
14
And its shade will be close over them, and its fruit clusters will be brought low within easy reach.
-
15
And there will be passed around among them vessels of silver and cups of crystal —
-
16
crystal of silver, which they have measured precisely.
-
17
And they will be given to drink therein a cup whose mixture is of ginger,
-
18
a spring therein named Salsabil.
-
19
And there will circulate among them ageless youths; when you see them, you would think them scattered pearls.
-
20
And when you look there, you will see bliss and a great kingdom.
-
21
They will be clothed in green garments of fine silk and rich brocade, adorned with silver bracelets, and their Lord will serve them a drink that is pure.
-
22
"Indeed this is a reward for you, and your effort has been appreciated."
-
23
Indeed it is We who have sent down to you the Quran in stages.
-
24
So be patient for the decision of your Lord, and do not obey from among them a sinner or an ungrateful disbeliever.
-
25
Remember your Lord's name at dawn and in the late afternoon,
-
26
and during part of the night prostrate to Him, and glorify Him through the long night.
-
27
Indeed these [people] love the immediate and leave behind them a heavy Day.
-
28
We created them and strengthened their frame, and when We will, We can replace them with others like them.
-
29
Indeed this is a reminder; so whoever wills may take a way to his Lord.
-
30
And you do not will except that God wills. Indeed God is ever All-Knowing, All-Wise.
-
31
He admits whom He wills into His mercy; but the wrongdoers — He has prepared for them a painful punishment.
