The TidingsHow to read the Hangul
الرَّحْمَٰنِ르r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀
- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).
How to read the Hangul
beginning the Christ salvation
- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
This surah is classified as revealed in the Meccan period. It opens by asking what people are questioning one another about, and answers: the great news over which they disagree, adding twice that they will come to know. It then lists God's provisions one by one: the earth as a resting place, the mountains as pegs, people created in pairs, sleep, night and day, seven strong heavens, a blazing lamp, and rain that brings forth grain and gardens. Next it describes the Day of Decision, when the Trumpet is blown, the sky opens into gateways and the mountains become a mirage. Hell lies in wait for those who did not expect a reckoning and denied God's signs, while the God-fearing will have gardens, vines and a full cup. It ends on the Day when the Spirit and angels stand in rows and the disbeliever cries, 'I wish I were dust!'

The name The name comes from verse 2, which refers to 'the great news' that people are questioning one another about.
-
1
About what are they asking one another?
-
2
About the great news,
-
3
over which they are in disagreement.
-
4
No! They will come to know.
-
5
Then, no! They will come to know.
-
6
Have We not made the earth a resting place,
-
7
and the mountains as pegs,
-
8
and created you in pairs,
-
9
and made your sleep for rest,
-
10
and made the night as a covering,
-
11
and made the day for livelihood,
-
12
and built above you seven strong [heavens],
-
13
and placed [therein] a blazing lamp,
-
14
and sent down from the rain clouds pouring water,
-
15
to bring forth thereby grain and vegetation,
-
16
and gardens of dense foliage?
-
17
Indeed the Day of Decision is an appointed time:
-
18
the Day the Trumpet is blown and you will come forth in crowds,
-
19
and the sky is opened and becomes gateways,
-
20
and the mountains are set in motion and become a mirage.
-
21
Indeed Hell is lying in wait,
-
22
a place of return for the transgressors,
-
23
in which they will remain for ages.
-
24
They will taste therein neither coolness nor drink,
-
25
except scalding water and foul pus —
-
26
a fitting recompense.
-
27
Indeed they were not expecting an account,
-
28
and they utterly denied Our signs.
-
29
But everything We have recorded in writing.
-
30
"So taste! We will not increase you except in punishment."
-
31
Indeed for the God-fearing is a place of triumph:
-
32
gardens and grapevines,
-
33
and full-breasted companions of equal age,
-
34
and a full cup.
-
35
They will hear therein neither idle talk nor lying —
-
36
a reward from your Lord, a generous gift, well-reckoned,
-
37
[from] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Gracious. They will not be able to address Him.
-
38
On the Day the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak, except one whom the Most Gracious permits and who says what is right.
-
39
That is the True Day. So whoever wills may take a way of return to his Lord.
-
40
Indeed We have warned you of a near punishment — on the Day a man will see what his hands have sent ahead, and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish I were dust!"
