How to read the Hangul

الرَّحْمَٰنِ르^r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀

• 비Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
• 마Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
• 스Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
• ^r라Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

How to read the Hangul

• 기Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
• 닝Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
• 트Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
• 더Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
• ^f팬Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

About this surah

Classified as revealed in the Meccan period, this surah swears by angels who extract souls violently, draw them out gently and arrange affairs, and says that on the Day of the quaking blast hearts will tremble and eyes be lowered. To those who mock the idea of returning after becoming decayed bones, it replies that a single shout will bring them all onto the open earth. It then tells how Moses was called in the sacred valley of Tuwa and sent to Pharaoh to invite him to purify himself, but Pharaoh proclaimed, 'I am your lord, most high,' and was seized in punishment, a lesson for those who fear God. Pointing to the creation of the sky, earth and mountains, it asks whether man is harder to create, and divides people into those who preferred this world and those who restrained their desires. Asked when the Hour will come, it answers that its end rests with the Lord.

    إِذْ이^ð드 نَادَاهُ나다후 رَبُّهُ^r랍부후 بِالْوَادِ빌와딜 الْمُقَدَّسِ무깟다시 طُوًى뚜와

    اذْهَبْ이^ð드하브 إِلَىٰ일라 فِرْعَوْنَ^f피^r르아우나 إِنَّهُ인나후 طَغَىٰ따가

    فَقُلْ^f파꿀 هَلْ할 لَكَ라카 إِلَىٰ일라 أَنْ안 تَزَكَّىٰ타작카

    وَأَهْدِيَكَ와아흐디야카 إِلَىٰ일라 رَبِّكَ^r랍비카 فَتَخْشَىٰ^f파타흐샤

    فَأَرَاهُ^f파아^r라훌 الْآيَةَ아야탈 الْكُبْرَىٰ쿠브^r라

    فَكَذَّبَ^f파캇^ð다바 وَعَصَىٰ와아사

    ثُمَّ^θ숨마 أَدْبَرَ아드바^r라 يَسْعَىٰ야스아

    فَحَشَرَ^f파하샤^r라 فَنَادَىٰ^f파나다

    فَقَالَ^f파깔라 أَنَا아나 رَبُّكُمُ^r랍부쿠물 الْأَعْلَىٰ아을라

    فَأَخَذَهُ^f파아카^ð다훌 اللَّهُ라후 نَكَالَ나칼랄 الْآخِرَةِ아키^r라티 وَالْأُولَىٰ왈울라

    إِنَّ인나 فِي^f피 ذَٰلِكَ^ð달리카 لَعِبْرَةً라이브^r라탈 لِمَنْ리만 يَخْشَىٰ야흐샤

    أَأَنْتُمْ아안툼 أَشَدُّ아샷두 خَلْقًا칼깐 أَمِ아밋 السَّمَاءُ사마우 ۚ بَنَاهَا바나하

    رَفَعَ^r라^f파아 سَمْكَهَا삼카하 فَسَوَّاهَا^f파사우와하

    وَأَغْطَشَ와아그따샤 لَيْلَهَا라일라하 وَأَخْرَجَ와아흐^r라자 ضُحَاهَا두하하

    وَالْأَرْضَ왈아^r르다 بَعْدَ바으다 ذَٰلِكَ^ð달리카 دَحَاهَا다하하

    أَخْرَجَ아흐^r라자 مِنْهَا민하 مَاءَهَا마아하 وَمَرْعَاهَا와마^r르아하

    وَالْجِبَالَ왈지발라 أَرْسَاهَا아^r르사하

    مَتَاعًا마타알 لَكُمْ라쿰 وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ왈리안아미쿰

    فَإِذَا^f파이^ð다 جَاءَتِ자아팃 الطَّامَّةُ땀마툴 الْكُبْرَىٰ쿠브^r라

    يَوْمَ야우마 يَتَذَكَّرُ야타^ð닥카^r룰 الْإِنْسَانُ인사누 مَا마 سَعَىٰ사아

    وَبُرِّزَتِ와부르^r리자틸 الْجَحِيمُ자히무 لِمَنْ리만 يَرَىٰ야^r라

    ☆
37. 37

    فَأَمَّا^f파암마 مَنْ만 طَغَىٰ따가

    ☆
38. 38

    وَآثَرَ와아^θ사^r랄 الْحَيَاةَ하야탓 الدُّنْيَا둔야

    ☆
39. 39

    فَإِنَّ^f파인날 الْجَحِيمَ자히마 هِيَ히얄 الْمَأْوَىٰ마으와

    ☆
40. 40

    وَأَمَّا와암마 مَنْ만 خَافَ카^f파 مَقَامَ마까마 رَبِّهِ^r랍비히 وَنَهَى와나한 النَّفْسَ나^f프사 عَنِ아닐 الْهَوَىٰ하와

    ☆
41. 41

    فَإِنَّ^f파인날 الْجَنَّةَ잔나타 هِيَ히얄 الْمَأْوَىٰ마으와

    ☆
42. 42

    يَسْأَلُونَكَ야스알루나카 عَنِ아닛 السَّاعَةِ사아티 أَيَّانَ아이야나 مُرْسَاهَا무^r르사하

    ☆

    فِيمَ^f피마 أَنْتَ안타 مِنْ민 ذِكْرَاهَا^ð디크^r라하

    إِلَىٰ일라 رَبِّكَ^r랍비카 مُنْتَهَاهَا문타하하

    إِنَّمَا인나마 أَنْتَ안타 مُنْذِرُ문^ð디^r루 مَنْ만 يَخْشَاهَا야흐샤하

    كَأَنَّهُمْ카안나훔 يَوْمَ야우마 يَرَوْنَهَا야^r라우나하 لَمْ람 يَلْبَثُوا얄바^θ수 إِلَّا일라 عَشِيَّةً아시야탄 أَوْ아우 ضُحَاهَا두하하
