- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

beginning the Christ salvation
- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
Classified as revealed in the Meccan period, this surah begins with someone frowning and turning away when a blind man came to him, and points out that attention was given to one who considered himself self-sufficient while the one who came eagerly and in awe of God was neglected. It then states that this message is a reminder recorded in honoured, purified scrolls in the hands of noble scribes. Next it asks how ungrateful man is, given that God created him from a drop of fluid, eased his way, causes him to die and will raise him again. It invites man to look at his food: the rain poured down, the earth split open, and the grain, grapes, olives, palms and fruit that grow from it. It closes with the Day when a person flees from his brother, parents, wife and children, and faces are either bright or covered in dust.

The name The name comes from the opening words of verse 1, 'He frowned and turned away.'
-
1
He frowned and turned away,
-
2
because the blind man came to him.
-
3
But what would make you know? Perhaps he might be purified,
-
4
or be reminded, and the reminder would benefit him.
-
5
As for the one who thinks himself self-sufficient,
-
6
to him you give attention.
-
7
Yet it is not on you if he is not purified.
-
8
But as for the one who came to you striving,
-
9
while he fears [God],
-
10
from him you are distracted.
-
11
No! Indeed it is a reminder;
-
12
so whoever wills may remember it.
-
13
[It is recorded] in honoured scrolls,
-
14
exalted and purified,
-
15
in the hands of scribes,
-
16
noble and dutiful.
-
17
Perish man! How ungrateful he is!
-
18
From what thing did He create him?
-
19
From a drop of fluid He created him and then proportioned him.
-
20
Then He eased the way for him.
-
21
Then He caused him to die and provided a grave for him.
-
22
Then, when He wills, He will resurrect him.
-
23
No! He has not yet fulfilled what He commanded him.
-
24
Then let man look at his food:
-
25
how We poured down water in torrents,
-
26
then split the earth in clefts,
-
27
and caused to grow therein grain,
-
28
and grapes and fodder,
-
29
and olives and palm trees,
-
30
and gardens of dense trees,
-
31
and fruit and pasture,
-
32
as provision for you and your livestock.
-
33
But when the deafening blast comes —
-
34
the Day a man will flee from his brother,
-
35
and his mother and his father,
-
36
and his wife and his children —
-
37
every man that Day will have a matter enough to occupy him.
-
38
Some faces that Day will be bright,
-
39
laughing, rejoicing at good news.
-
40
And some faces that Day will have dust upon them,
-
41
darkness covering them.
-
42
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked.
