Those Who Give Short MeasureHow to read the Hangul
الرَّحْمَٰنِ르r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀
- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

beginning the Christ salvation
- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
Classified as revealed in the Meccan period, this surah opens with a warning of woe to those who give short measure, taking in full from others but short-changing them when they measure or weigh, and asks whether they do not think they will stand before the Lord of all the worlds. It then contrasts the record of the wicked, kept in Sijjin, with the record of the righteous, kept in Illiyyun. Those who deny the Judgement are described as having hearts covered with rust by their own deeds, and they will be screened off from their Lord on that Day. The righteous, by contrast, recline on couches looking on and drink a sealed wine whose seal is musk and whose mixture is from the spring of Tasnim; let those who compete, compete for this. The surah ends by noting that those who mocked the believers will see the roles reversed.
- Giving short measure
- Sijjin and Illiyyun

The name The name comes from verse 1, which warns of woe to those who give short measure.
-
1
Woe to those who give short measure,
-
2
who, when they take a measure from people, take in full,
-
3
yet when they measure or weigh for others, they short-change them.
-
4
Do they not think that they will be resurrected
-
5
for a tremendous Day —
-
6
a Day on which all people will rise up before the Lord of all the worlds?
-
7
No! Indeed the record of the wicked is in Sijjin.
-
8
And what will make you know what Sijjin is?
-
9
A register inscribed.
-
10
Woe on that Day to the deniers,
-
11
who deny the Day of Judgement.
-
12
And none denies it except every sinful transgressor.
-
13
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the ancients."
-
14
No! Rather, what they used to earn has covered their hearts with rust.
-
15
No! Indeed from their Lord, that Day, they will be screened off.
-
16
Then indeed they will burn in Hellfire.
-
17
Then it will be said, "This is what you used to deny."
-
18
No! Indeed the record of the righteous is in Illiyyun.
-
19
And what will make you know what Illiyyun is?
-
20
A register inscribed.
-
21
witnessed by those brought near [to God].
-
22
Indeed the righteous will be in bliss,
-
23
on couches, looking on.
-
24
You will recognize in their faces the radiance of bliss.
-
25
They will be given to drink from a pure wine, sealed,
-
26
whose seal is musk. So for this let the competitors compete.
-
27
And its mixture is of Tasnim,
-
28
a spring from which those brought near [to God] drink.
-
29
Indeed those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed,
-
30
and when they passed by them, they would wink at one another,
-
31
and when they returned to their people, they would return jesting,
-
32
and when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed these are truly astray."
-
33
But they had not been sent as guardians over them.
-
34
So today those who believe are laughing at the disbelievers,
-
35
on couches, looking on.
-
36
Have the disbelievers been repaid for what they used to do?
