The Splitting AsunderHow to read the Hangul
الرَّحْمَٰنِ르r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀
- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
Classified as revealed in the Meccan period, this surah opens with the sky splitting open and the earth spreading out and casting forth what is within it, both listening to their Lord as they must. It then addresses man: you are labouring toward your Lord with great toil, and you will meet Him. Whoever receives his record in his right hand will have an easy reckoning and return to his family in happiness, while whoever receives it behind his back will cry out for destruction and burn in a Blaze, having thought he would never return. Swearing by the twilight glow, the night and the full moon, the surah declares that people will pass from stage to stage. It ends by asking why some do not believe or prostrate when the Quran is recited, and promises a reward that is never cut off to those who believe and do good.
- Sky and earth obey
- Toiling toward the Lord
- Records: right hand, back
- From stage to stage
- An unending reward
The name The name comes from verse 1, which opens with the sky splitting open.
-
1
When the sky splits open,
-
2
and listens to its Lord, as it rightly must,
-
3
and when the earth is spread out,
-
4
and casts out what is within it and becomes empty,
-
5
and listens to its Lord, as it rightly must,
-
6
O man, indeed you are labouring toward your Lord with [great] toil, and you will meet Him.
-
7
Then as for the one who is given his record in his right hand,
-
8
he will be judged with an easy account,
-
9
and will return to his people in happiness.
-
10
But as for the one who is given his record behind his back,
-
11
he will cry out for destruction,
-
12
and will burn in a Blaze.
-
13
Indeed he used to be among his people in happiness.
-
14
Indeed he thought he would never return.
-
15
Yes indeed! His Lord was ever watching him.
-
16
So I swear by the twilight glow,
-
17
and the night and what it envelops,
-
18
and the moon when it becomes full,
-
19
you will surely pass from stage to stage.
-
20
So what is the matter with them that they do not believe,
-
21
and do not fall prostrate when the Quran is recited to them?
-
22
Rather, those who disbelieve deny,
-
23
and God knows best what they keep within [themselves].
-
24
So give them tidings of a painful punishment,
-
25
except those who believe and do righteous deeds; for them is a reward that is never cut off.
