How to read the Hangul

الرَّحْمَٰنِ르^r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀

• 비Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
• 마Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
• 스Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
• ^r라Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

How to read the Hangul

• 기Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
• 닝Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
• 트Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
• 더Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
• ^f팬Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

About this surah

Classified as revealed in the Meccan period, this surah begins with oaths by the sky with its great constellations, by the promised Day, and by the witness and what is witnessed. It then tells of the people of the trench, who sat beside a pit of blazing fire and watched what they were doing to the believers, resenting them for nothing except their faith in God, and declares that they were destroyed. Those who persecuted believing men and women without repenting will face the punishment of Hell and burning, while those who believe and do good will have Gardens beneath which rivers flow. The surah goes on to describe God as the One who originates and repeats creation, Most Forgiving and Most Loving, and recalls the armies of Pharaoh and Thamud. It ends by stating that this is a glorious Quran in a Preserved Tablet.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

   وَالسَّمَاءِ왓사마이 ذَاتِ^ð다틸 الْبُرُوجِ부^r루즈

   거대한 별자리들을 지닌 하늘을 두고,

   وَالْيَوْمِ왈야우밀 الْمَوْعُودِ마우우드

   약속된 날을 두고,

   وَشَاهِدٍ와샤히딘 وَمَشْهُودٍ와마시후드

   증언하는 이와 증언되는 것을 두고 맹세하노라.

   قُتِلَ꾸틸라 أَصْحَابُ아스하불 الْأُخْدُودِ우흐두드

   구덩이의 사람들은 멸망하였으니,

   النَّارِ안나^r리 ذَاتِ^ð다틸 الْوَقُودِ와꾸드

   땔감이 가득한 불의 [구덩이였다].

   إِذْ이^ð드 هُمْ훔 عَلَيْهَا알라이하 قُعُودٌ꾸우드

   그때 그들은 그 곁에 앉아,

   وَهُمْ와훔 عَلَىٰ알라 مَا마 يَفْعَلُونَ야^f프알루나 بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ빌무으미니나 شُهُودٌ슈후드

   믿는 이들에게 자기들이 하는 짓을 지켜보고 있었다.

   وَمَا와마 نَقَمُوا나까무 مِنْهُمْ민훔 إِلَّا일라 أَنْ안 يُؤْمِنُوا유으미누 بِاللَّهِ빌라힐 الْعَزِيزِ아지질 الْحَمِيدِ하미드

   그들이 믿는 이들을 미워한 이유는 오직 그들이 전능하시고 찬양받으실 하나님을 믿는다는 것뿐이었다.

   الَّذِي알라^ð디 لَهُ라후 مُلْكُ물쿳 السَّمَاوَاتِ사마와티 وَالْأَرْضِ왈아^r르디 ۚ وَاللَّهُ왈라후 عَلَىٰ알라 كُلِّ쿨리 شَيْءٍ샤이인 شَهِيدٌ샤히드

   하늘과 땅의 주권은 그분께 속한다. 하나님께서는 모든 것의 증인이시다.

    إِنَّ인날 الَّذِينَ라^ð디나 فَتَنُوا^f파타눌 الْمُؤْمِنِينَ무으미니나 وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ왈무으미나티 ثُمَّ^θ숨마 لَمْ람 يَتُوبُوا야투부 فَلَهُمْ^f팔라훔 عَذَابُ아^ð다부 جَهَنَّمَ자한나마 وَلَهُمْ왈라훔 عَذَابُ아^ð다불 الْحَرِيقِ하^r리끄

    진정 믿는 남자들과 믿는 여자들을 박해하고도 뉘우치지 않은 자들에게는 지옥의 벌이 있으며, 불태우는 벌이 있다.

    إِنَّ인날 الَّذِينَ라^ð디나 آمَنُوا아마누 وَعَمِلُوا와아밀룻 الصَّالِحَاتِ살리하티 لَهُمْ라훔 جَنَّاتٌ잔나툰 تَجْرِي타즈^r리 مِنْ민 تَحْتِهَا타흐티할 الْأَنْهَارُ안하^r루 ۚ ذَٰلِكَ^ð달리칼 الْفَوْزُ^f파우줄 الْكَبِيرُ카비^r르

    진정 믿고 선한 일을 하는 이들에게는 아래로 강들이 흐르는 낙원들이 있다. 그것이야말로 큰 성취이다.

    إِنَّ인나 بَطْشَ바뜨샤 رَبِّكَ^r랍비카 لَشَدِيدٌ라샤디드

    진정 너의 주님의 붙잡으심은 혹독하다.

    إِنَّهُ인나후 هُوَ후와 يُبْدِئُ윱디우 وَيُعِيدُ와유이드

    진정 [창조를] 처음 시작하시고 다시 되풀이하시는 분이 바로 그분이시다.

    وَهُوَ와후왈 الْغَفُورُ가^f푸^r룰 الْوَدُودُ와두드

    그분께서는 너그러이 용서하시며 사랑이 넘치시는 분이시고,

    ذُو^ð둘 الْعَرْشِ아^r르실 الْمَجِيدُ마지드

    옥좌의 주인이시며 영광스러우신 분이시고,

    فَعَّالٌ^f파알룰 لِمَا리마 يُرِيدُ유^r리드

    원하시는 것은 무엇이든 행하시는 분이시다.

    هَلْ할 أَتَاكَ아타카 حَدِيثُ하디^θ술 الْجُنُودِ주누드

    군대들의 이야기가 너에게 이르렀느냐?

    فِرْعَوْنَ^f피^r르아우나 وَثَمُودَ와^θ사무드

    파라오와 사무드 백성의 [이야기가]?

    بَلِ발릴 الَّذِينَ라^ð디나 كَفَرُوا카^f파^r루 فِي^f피 تَكْذِيبٍ탁^ð디브

    그러나 믿지 않는 자들은 부인하고만 있다.

    وَاللَّهُ왈라후 مِنْ민 وَرَائِهِمْ와^r라이힘 مُحِيطٌ무히뜨

    하나님께서는 그들 뒤에서 그들을 에워싸고 계신다.

21. 21

    بَلْ발 هُوَ후와 قُرْآنٌ꾸^r르아눔 مَجِيدٌ마지드

    오히려 그것은 영광스러운 꾸란이며,

22. 22

    فِي^f피 لَوْحٍ라우힘 مَحْفُوظٍ마흐^f푸^ð드

    잘 보존된 서판에 있다.
