How to read the Hangul

الرَّحْمَٰنِ르^r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀

• 비Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
• 마Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
• 스Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
• ^r라Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

How to read the Hangul

• 기Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
• 닝Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
• 트Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
• 더Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
• ^f팬Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

About this surah

Classed as a Meccan sura, it opens with a command to glorify the name of the Lord, the Most High, who created and proportioned, determined and guided, and who brings out green pasture only to turn it into dark stubble. The one addressed is then promised, 'We will make you recite, and you will not forget,' along with being eased toward ease, and is told to remind people when reminding benefits. Two responses follow: whoever fears God takes the reminder, while the most wretched avoids it and burns in the greatest Fire, where he neither dies nor lives. Success belongs to the one who purifies himself, remembers his Lord's name and prays. The sura observes that people prefer the life of this world although the Hereafter is better and more lasting, and closes by saying this message is also found in the scriptures of Abraham and Moses.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

   الَّذِي알라^ð디 خَلَقَ칼라까 فَسَوَّىٰ^f파사우와

   وَالَّذِي왈라^ð디 قَدَّرَ깟다^r라 فَهَدَىٰ^f파하다

   وَالَّذِي왈라^ð디 أَخْرَجَ아흐^r라잘 الْمَرْعَىٰ마^r르아

   فَجَعَلَهُ^f파자알라후 غُثَاءً구^θ사안 أَحْوَىٰ아흐와

   سَنُقْرِئُكَ사누끄^r리우카 فَلَا^f팔라 تَنْسَىٰ탄사

   إِلَّا일라 مَا마 شَاءَ샤알 اللَّهُ라후 ۚ إِنَّهُ인나후 يَعْلَمُ야을라물 الْجَهْرَ자흐^r라 وَمَا와마 يَخْفَىٰ야흐^f파

    سَيَذَّكَّرُ사얏^ð닥카^r루 مَنْ만 يَخْشَىٰ야흐샤

    وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا와야타잔나부할 الْأَشْقَى아시까

    الَّذِي알라^ð디 يَصْلَى야슬란 النَّارَ나^r랄 الْكُبْرَىٰ쿠브^r라

    ثُمَّ^θ숨마 لَا라 يَمُوتُ야무투 فِيهَا^f피하 وَلَا왈라 يَحْيَىٰ야흐야

    قَدْ까드 أَفْلَحَ아^f플라하 مَنْ만 تَزَكَّىٰ타작카

    وَذَكَرَ와^ð다카^r라 اسْمَ스마 رَبِّهِ^r랍비히 فَصَلَّىٰ^f파살라

    بَلْ발 تُؤْثِرُونَ투으^θ시^r루날 الْحَيَاةَ하야탓 الدُّنْيَا둔야

    وَالْآخِرَةُ왈아키^r라투 خَيْرٌ카이^r룬 وَأَبْقَىٰ와압까

    إِنَّ인나 هَٰذَا하^ð다 لَفِي라^f핏 الصُّحُفِ수후^f필 الْأُولَىٰ울라
