- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
Classed as a Meccan sura, it opens by saying that the disbelievers will one day wish they had been Muslims, and answers those who call the Prophet mad and demand that he bring angels. God declares that He sent down the Reminder and will guard it. Signs follow: the sky adorned with constellations, the earth spread out, the winds and the rain. The creation of man from dry ringing clay and of the jinn from fire leads into the story of Iblis, who refuses to bow to the human being and vows to mislead people, but is told he has no authority over God's true servants. The sura then briefly recounts Abraham's guests, the destruction of Lot's town, and the fate of the people of the Thicket and of al-Hijr, who carved homes in the mountains. It mentions the seven oft-repeated verses and ends by telling the Prophet to worship his Lord until certainty comes.
- Guarding the Reminder
- Creation of man and jinn
- Iblis's refusal
- Peoples who were destroyed
- Steadfast worship
The name The name comes from verses 80–84, about the people of al-Hijr, who carved houses out of the mountains yet rejected the messengers.
-
1
Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book and of a clear Quran.
-
2
Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims.
-
3
Leave them to eat and enjoy themselves and be distracted by hope; they will come to know.
-
4
We never destroyed any town without its having a known decree.
-
5
No community can hasten its term, nor can they delay it.
-
6
They say, "You to whom the Reminder has been sent down, you are surely mad.
-
7
Why do you not bring us the angels, if you are truthful?"
-
8
We do not send down the angels except with the truth, and then they would be given no respite.
-
9
It is We who have sent down the Reminder, and it is We who will guard it.
-
10
We sent [messengers] before you among the sects of the earlier peoples.
-
11
No messenger came to them but they mocked him.
-
12
Thus do We let it enter the hearts of the guilty:
-
13
they do not believe in it, though the way of the earlier peoples has already passed.
-
14
Even if We opened for them a gate in the sky and they kept ascending through it,
-
15
they would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled; rather, we are a people bewitched."
-
16
We have placed constellations in the sky and adorned it for those who look,
-
17
and from every accursed devil We have kept it safe,
-
18
except one who steals a hearing, and he is pursued by a clear flaming meteor.
-
19
And the earth, We spread it out and cast firm mountains on it, and caused everything to grow on it in due balance.
-
20
And We have made in it means of livelihood for you and for those whom you do not provide for.
-
21
There is nothing whose treasuries are not with Us, and We send it down only in a known measure.
-
22
We send the fertilising winds, and send down water from the sky, and give it to you to drink, and it is not you who store it.
-
23
It is We who give life and cause death, and We are the inheritors.
-
24
We know those of you who have gone before, and We know those who come later.
-
25
It is your Lord who will assemble them all. Truly He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
-
26
We created man from dry ringing clay, from moulded dark mud.
-
27
And the jinn We created before, from the fire of scorching wind.
-
28
And when your Lord said to the angels, "I am going to create a human being from dry ringing clay, from moulded dark mud.
-
29
When I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down in prostration before him."
-
30
So the angels prostrated, all of them together,
-
31
except Iblis. He refused to be among those who prostrated.
-
32
[God] said, "Iblis, what is the matter with you that you are not among those who prostrate?"
-
33
He said, "I am not one to prostrate to a human being whom You created from dry ringing clay, from moulded dark mud."
-
34
[God] said, "Then get out of here, for you are accursed,
-
35
and the curse will be upon you until the Day of Judgement."
-
36
He said, "My Lord, then grant me respite until the Day they are raised."
-
37
[God] said, "You are among those granted respite
-
38
until the Day of the known time."
-
39
He said, "My Lord, because You have let me go astray, I will surely make [evil] attractive to them on earth, and I will surely lead them all astray,
-
40
except Your chosen servants among them."
-
41
[God] said, "This is a straight path to Me.
-
42
Over My servants you have no authority, except those who follow you among the deviators.
-
43
And Hell is the promised place for them all.
-
44
It has seven gates; for each gate is an assigned portion of them."
-
45
The God-fearing will be among gardens and springs:
-
46
"Enter them in peace and security."
-
47
We will remove whatever rancour is in their hearts; [they will be] brothers, on couches facing one another.
-
48
No fatigue will touch them there, nor will they ever be expelled from it.
-
49
Inform My servants that I am the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful,
-
50
and that My punishment is the painful punishment.
-
51
And inform them about Abraham's guests,
-
52
They entered his presence and said, "Peace." He said, "We are fearful of you."
-
53
They said, "Do not be afraid; we bring you good news of a boy who will be endowed with knowledge."
-
54
He said, "Do you bring me good news when old age has overtaken me? Then what is your good news?"
-
55
They said, "We bring you good news in truth, so do not be one of those who despair."
-
56
He said, "And who despairs of his Lord's mercy except those who are astray?"
-
57
He said, "Then what is your mission, you messengers?"
-
58
They said, "We have been sent to a guilty people,
-
59
except the family of Lot; we will save them all,
-
60
except his wife. We have determined that she will be among those who remain behind."
-
61
When the messengers came to the family of Lot,
-
62
he said, "You are people unknown [to me]."
-
63
They said, "Rather, we have come to you with what they used to doubt.
-
64
We have come to you with the truth, and we are telling you no lie.
-
65
So travel with your family in part of the night, and follow behind them. Let none of you look back, and go where you are commanded."
-
66
And We conveyed to him this decree: that the last of these [people] would be cut off by morning.
-
67
The people of the city came rejoicing.
-
68
He said, "These are my guests, so do not disgrace me.
-
69
Be mindful of God and do not shame me."
-
70
They said, "Did we not forbid you [to protect] anyone at all?"
-
71
He said, "Here are my daughters, if you must act."
-
72
By your life, they were wandering blindly in their intoxication.
-
73
So the Blast seized them at sunrise,
-
74
so We overturned [the city], bringing its heights down to its depths, and We showered on them stones of hardened clay.
-
75
In that there are signs for those who discern.
-
76
And it lies on a road that still exists.
-
77
In that there is a sign for the believers.
-
78
And the people of the Thicket were also wrongdoers,
-
79
so We took retribution on them. Both [ruined places] lie on a clear highway.
-
80
The people of al-Hijr also denied the messengers.
-
81
Our signs came to them from Us, yet they kept turning their backs on them.
-
82
They used to carve houses out of the mountains, feeling secure.
-
83
But the Blast seized them in the morning,
-
84
and what they used to earn did not avail them.
-
85
We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth. The Hour is surely coming, so overlook [their faults] with gracious forbearance.
-
86
Your Lord is the Creator of all, the All-Knowing.
-
87
We have given you seven of the oft-repeated [verses] and the great Quran.
-
88
Do not extend your eyes towards what We have given some pairs among them to enjoy, and do not grieve over them, and lower your wing [in gentleness] to the believers.
-
89
And say, "I am the clear warner"
-
90
— just as We sent down [punishment] on those who divided [the Scripture],
-
91
who made the Quran into fragments.
-
92
So by your Lord, We will surely question them all
-
93
about what they used to do.
-
94
So proclaim openly what you are commanded, and turn away from the idolaters.
-
95
We are sufficient for you against the mockers,
-
96
those who set up another god alongside God. They will come to know.
-
97
We know that your heart is distressed by what they say.
-
98
So glorify your Lord with praise and be among those who prostrate,
-
99
and worship your Lord until the certainty comes to you.
