- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

About this surah
This surah is classified as revealed in the Medinan period. It opens by saying that God heard the woman who argued about her husband and complained to Him, then declares that calling one's wife like one's mother's back is a false and detestable statement, setting out its expiation: freeing a slave, fasting two consecutive months, or feeding sixty poor people. It goes on to say that no three people talk in secret without God being the fourth among them, forbids secret talk aimed at sin and hostility, and gives instructions on making room in gatherings and offering charity before consulting the Messenger privately. It closes by contrasting those who ally with a people God is angry with, called the party of Satan, and those who put faith above even their closest kin, called the party of God.
- God hears the complaint
- The mother's-back declaration
- Secret conversations
- Manners in gatherings
- God's party and Satan's
The name It takes its name from the woman in verse 1 who argued with the Messenger about her husband and pleaded her case to God.
-
1
God has heard the words of the woman who argues with you about her husband and complains to God, and God hears your conversation. Indeed God is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
-
2
Those of you who declare their wives [to be like] their mothers' backs — they are not their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. They are indeed saying something detestable and false. But God is Pardoning, Most Forgiving.
-
3
Those who declare their wives [to be like their mothers] and then go back on what they said must free a slave before the two touch each other. That is what you are admonished with, and God is fully aware of what you do.
-
4
And whoever does not find [the means] must fast for two consecutive months before the two touch each other. And whoever is unable must feed sixty poor people. That is so that you may believe in God and His Messenger. These are the limits set by God, and for the disbelievers there is a painful punishment.
-
5
Indeed those who oppose God and His Messenger will be humbled as those before them were humbled. We have sent down clear verses, and for the disbelievers there is a humiliating punishment.
-
6
On the Day God will raise them all and inform them of what they did. God has recorded it, while they have forgotten it. And God is Witness over all things.
-
7
Do you not see that God knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth? There is no secret talk among three but He is their fourth, nor among five but He is their sixth, nor fewer than that nor more but He is with them wherever they may be. Then He will inform them of what they did on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed God has knowledge of all things.
-
8
Have you not seen those who were forbidden from secret talk, and then return to what they were forbidden, and secretly converse about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger? And when they come to you, they greet you with what God does not greet you with, and they say among themselves, "Why does God not punish us for what we say?" Hell is enough for them; they will burn in it, and what a wretched destination!
-
9
O you who believe, when you converse in secret, do not converse about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger, but converse about righteousness and mindfulness of God. And be mindful of God, to whom you will be gathered.
-
10
Secret talk is only from Satan, to grieve those who believe, but he cannot harm them at all except by God's permission. And in God let the believers put their trust.
-
11
O you who believe, when you are told, "Make room in the gatherings," then make room; God will make room for you. And when you are told, "Rise up," then rise up; God will raise those of you who believe and those who have been given knowledge by degrees. And God is fully aware of what you do.
-
12
O you who believe, when you consult the Messenger privately, offer some charity before your private consultation. That is better for you and purer. But if you do not find [the means], then indeed God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
13
Are you afraid to offer charity before your private consultation? Then since you did not do it and God has turned to you in mercy, establish the prayer, give the alms, and obey God and His Messenger. And God is fully aware of what you do.
-
14
Have you not seen those who take as allies a people with whom God is angry? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear to a lie while they know.
-
15
God has prepared for them a severe punishment. Evil indeed is what they used to do.
-
16
They have taken their oaths as a shield and so turned [people] away from the way of God; so for them there is a humiliating punishment.
-
17
Their riches and their offspring will be of no use to them at all against God. Those are the people of the Fire, in which they will remain forever.
-
18
On the Day God will raise them all, they will swear to Him as they swear to you, and they will think that they stand on something. Truly, they are the liars!
-
19
Satan has overcome them and made them forget the remembrance of God. They are the party of Satan. Truly, the party of Satan are the losers!
-
20
Indeed those who oppose God and His Messenger are among the most abased.
-
21
God has decreed, "I will surely prevail, I and My messengers." Indeed God is Powerful, Almighty.
-
22
You will not find a people who believe in God and the Last Day showing affection to those who oppose God and His Messenger, even if they are their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred. They are the ones in whose hearts He has inscribed faith and whom He has strengthened with a spirit from Him. He will admit them into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide therein forever. God is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. They are the party of God. Truly, the party of God are the successful!
