Surah
About this surah
This surah is classified as revealed in the Medinan period. After the opening statement that all in the heavens and earth glorify God, it rebukes believers for saying what they do not do, and says God loves those who fight in His cause in ranks like a solid structure. It then recalls Moses speaking to a people who hurt him, and Jesus son of Mary telling the Children of Israel that he confirms the Torah and brings news of a messenger to come after him named Ahmad. It declares that those who try to extinguish God's light with their mouths will fail, for God will perfect His light, and it describes faith and striving with wealth and life as a trade that saves from painful punishment. It ends by calling believers to be helpers of God, as the disciples of Jesus were.

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth glorifies God, and He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.

O you who believe, why do you say what you do not do?
-
3
It is most hateful in the sight of God that you say what you do not do.

Indeed God loves those who fight in His cause in ranks, as though they were a solidly built structure.

And [remember] when Moses said to his people, "O my people, why do you hurt me, when you know that I am the Messenger of God to you?" So when they swerved, God made their hearts swerve. And God does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

And [remember] when Jesus son of Mary said, "O Children of Israel, I am the Messenger of God to you, confirming what came before me of the Torah, and bringing good news of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad." But when he came to them with clear proofs, they said, "This is plain magic."

And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against God while he is being invited to Islam? And God does not guide the wrongdoing people.

They want to extinguish the light of God with their mouths, but God will perfect His light, even though the disbelievers dislike it.

It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religion, even though the idolaters dislike it.

O you who believe, shall I direct you to a trade that will save you from a painful punishment?
-
11
That you believe in God and His Messenger and strive in the cause of God with your wealth and your lives. That is better for you, if you only knew.

He will forgive you your sins and admit you into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, and pleasant dwellings in the Gardens of Eden. That is the great triumph.

And [there is] another [favour] that you love: help from God and a near victory. So give good news to the believers.

O you who believe, be helpers of God, as Jesus son of Mary said to the disciples, "Who are my helpers [in the way] to God?" The disciples said, "We are the helpers of God." Then a group of the Children of Israel believed and a group disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant.
