How to read the Hangul

الرَّحْمَٰنِ르^r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀

• 비Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
• 마Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
• 스Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
• ^r라Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

How to read the Hangul

• 기Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
• 닝Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
• 트Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
• 더Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
• ^f팬Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

About this surah

This surah is classified as revealed in the Medinan period. It begins with all creation glorifying God, the Sovereign and Most Holy, and presents as His bounty the raising of a messenger among an unlettered people, who recites God's verses to them and teaches them the Book and wisdom. It then compares those entrusted with the Torah who did not carry it out to a donkey loaded with books, and reminds those who claim to be God's only allies that the death they flee will surely meet them. The second half instructs believers to leave off trading and hasten to the remembrance of God when the call to prayer is made on Friday, and then to disperse in the land seeking God's bounty once the prayer is over. It closes by mentioning people who ran off to trade and amusement, leaving the Messenger standing.

   هُوَ후왈 الَّذِي라^ð디 بَعَثَ바아^θ사 فِي^f필 الْأُمِّيِّينَ움미이나 رَسُولًا^r라술람 مِنْهُمْ민훔 يَتْلُو야틀루 عَلَيْهِمْ알라이힘 آيَاتِهِ아야티히 وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ와유작키힘 وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ와유알리무후물 الْكِتَابَ키타바 وَالْحِكْمَةَ왈히크마타 وَإِنْ와인 كَانُوا카누 مِنْ민 قَبْلُ까블루 لَفِي라^f피 ضَلَالٍ달랄림 مُبِينٍ무빈

   مَثَلُ마^θ살룰 الَّذِينَ라^ð디나 حُمِّلُوا훔밀룻 التَّوْرَاةَ타우^r라타 ثُمَّ^θ숨마 لَمْ람 يَحْمِلُوهَا야흐밀루하 كَمَثَلِ카마^θ살릴 الْحِمَارِ히마^r리 يَحْمِلُ야흐밀루 أَسْفَارًا아스^f파^r람 ۚ بِئْسَ비으사 مَثَلُ마^θ살룰 الْقَوْمِ까우밀 الَّذِينَ라^ð디나 كَذَّبُوا캇^ð다부 بِآيَاتِ비아야틸 اللَّهِ라히 ۚ وَاللَّهُ왈라후 لَا라 يَهْدِي야흐딜 الْقَوْمَ까우맛 الظَّالِمِينَ^ð달리민

   قُلْ꿀 يَا야 أَيُّهَا아이유할 الَّذِينَ라^ð디나 هَادُوا하두 إِنْ인 زَعَمْتُمْ자암툼 أَنَّكُمْ안나쿰 أَوْلِيَاءُ아울리야우 لِلَّهِ릴라히 مِنْ민 دُونِ두닌 النَّاسِ나시 فَتَمَنَّوُا^f파타만나울 الْمَوْتَ마우타 إِنْ인 كُنْتُمْ쿤툼 صَادِقِينَ사디낀

   وَلَا왈라 يَتَمَنَّوْنَهُ야타만나우나후 أَبَدًا아바담 بِمَا비마 قَدَّمَتْ깟다마트 أَيْدِيهِمْ아이디힘 ۚ وَاللَّهُ왈라후 عَلِيمٌ알리뭄 بِالظَّالِمِينَ빗^ð달리민

   قُلْ꿀 إِنَّ인날 الْمَوْتَ마우탈 الَّذِي라^ð디 تَفِرُّونَ타^f피르^r루나 مِنْهُ민후 فَإِنَّهُ^f파인나후 مُلَاقِيكُمْ물라끼쿰 ۖ ثُمَّ^θ숨마 تُرَدُّونَ투^r랏두나 إِلَىٰ일라 عَالِمِ알리밀 الْغَيْبِ가이비 وَالشَّهَادَةِ왓샤하다티 فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ^f파유납비우쿰 بِمَا비마 كُنْتُمْ쿤툼 تَعْمَلُونَ타으말룬

   يَا야 أَيُّهَا아이유할 الَّذِينَ라^ð디나 آمَنُوا아마누 إِذَا이^ð다 نُودِيَ누디야 لِلصَّلَاةِ릿살라티 مِنْ민 يَوْمِ야우밀 الْجُمُعَةِ주무아티 فَاسْعَوْا^f파스아우 إِلَىٰ일라 ذِكْرِ^ð디크^r릴 اللَّهِ라히 وَذَرُوا와^ð다^r룰 الْبَيْعَ바이아 ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ^ð달리쿰 خَيْرٌ카이^r룰 لَكُمْ라쿰 إِنْ인 كُنْتُمْ쿤툼 تَعْلَمُونَ타을라문

    فَإِذَا^f파이^ð다 قُضِيَتِ꾸디야팃 الصَّلَاةُ살라투 فَانْتَشِرُوا^f판타시^r루 فِي^f필 الْأَرْضِ아^r르디 وَابْتَغُوا와브타구 مِنْ민 فَضْلِ^f파들릴 اللَّهِ라히 وَاذْكُرُوا와^ð드쿠^r룰 اللَّهَ라하 كَثِيرًا카^θ시^r랄 لَعَلَّكُمْ라알라쿰 تُفْلِحُونَ투^f플리훈

    وَإِذَا와이^ð다 رَأَوْا^r라아우 تِجَارَةً티자^r라탄 أَوْ아우 لَهْوًا라흐와닌 انْفَضُّوا^f팟두 إِلَيْهَا일라이하 وَتَرَكُوكَ와타^r라쿠카 قَائِمًا까이만 ۚ قُلْ꿀 مَا마 عِنْدَ인달 اللَّهِ라히 خَيْرٌ카이^r룸 مِنَ미날 اللَّهْوِ라흐위 وَمِنَ와미낫 التِّجَارَةِ티자^r라티 ۚ وَاللَّهُ왈라후 خَيْرُ카이^r루 الرَّازِقِينَ르^r라지낀
