- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.

- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
Classified as revealed in the Meccan period, the whole surah tells the story of Noah, beginning with God sending him to warn his people before a painful punishment came. Noah calls them to worship God and be mindful of Him, but most of the surah is his report to God: he called them day and night, openly and in private, yet they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments and persisted in arrogance. He told them that if they asked forgiveness, God would send rain and give them wealth, children, gardens and rivers, and reminded them of how God created them in stages and set the moon and sun in the seven heavens. His people urged each other not to abandon Wadd, Suwa, Yaghuth, Yauq and Nasr, and they were drowned. It ends with Noah's prayer for forgiveness for himself, his parents and the believers.
- Noah's persistent call
- A people who refused
- Call to seek forgiveness
- Signs in creation
- Noah's final prayer
The name It is named after Noah, whose mission to his people and appeals to God make up the entire surah, beginning in verse 1.
-
1
Indeed We sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Warn your people before a painful punishment comes to them."
-
2
He said, "O my people, indeed I am a clear warner to you:
-
3
worship God, be mindful of Him, and obey me.
-
4
He will forgive you some of your sins and grant you respite until an appointed term. Indeed when the term of God comes, it cannot be delayed, if you only knew."
-
5
He said, "My Lord, day and night I have called out to my people,
-
6
but my calling has only increased them in flight.
-
7
And every time I called them so that You might forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with great arrogance.
-
8
Then I called them openly.
-
9
Then I announced to them publicly and confided to them privately,
-
10
and I said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord; indeed He is ever Forgiving.
-
11
He will send the sky upon you in abundant rain,
-
12
and give you increase in wealth and children, and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.
-
13
What is the matter with you that you do not hold God in due reverence,
-
14
when He has created you in stages?
-
15
Do you not see how God has created seven heavens in layers,
-
16
and made the moon therein a light and made the sun a lamp?
-
17
And God has caused you to grow from the earth like a plant.
-
18
Later He will put you back into it, and then bring you out [once more].
-
19
And God has made the earth a wide expanse for you,
-
20
so that you may travel its broad pathways.'"
-
21
Noah said, "My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed one whose wealth and children have increased him in nothing but loss.
-
22
And they have plotted a tremendous plot,
-
23
and have said, 'Do not give up your gods — do not give up Wadd or Suwa, or Yaghuth, Yauq, and Nasr.'
-
24
And they have led many astray. So increase the wrongdoers in nothing but error."
-
25
Because of their sins they were drowned and then admitted into a Fire, and they found no helpers for themselves besides God.
-
26
And Noah said, "My Lord, do not leave upon the earth a single dweller from among the disbelievers.
-
27
Indeed if You leave them, they will mislead Your servants and will beget none but wicked disbelievers.
-
28
My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house as a believer, and the believing men and the believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers in anything but ruin."
