The Enwrapped OneHow to read the Hangul
الرَّحْمَٰنِ르r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀
- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

beginning the Christ salvation
- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

About this surah
This surah is classified as revealed in the Meccan period. It begins by addressing the one wrapped in garments, telling him to stand in prayer for half the night, or a little less or more, and to recite the Quran in measured recitation. It says a weighty word will be cast upon him and that rising at night leaves a deeper impression, and urges him to remember his Lord's name, bear patiently what people say and keep away from them graciously. It then warns of a Day when the earth and mountains will quake and children will turn grey-haired, citing Pharaoh, who disobeyed the messenger sent to him and was seized. The long final verse eases the night prayer, noting that some will be ill, some travelling for their livelihood and some fighting, and tells them to recite what is easy of the Quran, pray, and give alms.
- Night prayer
- Measured recitation
- Patience with opponents
- Pharaoh as warning
- An eased obligation
The name The name comes from verse 1, which addresses the Prophet as 'you who are wrapped' in garments.
-
1
O you who are wrapped [in garments],
-
2
stand [in prayer] through the night, except a little —
-
3
half of it, or reduce it a little,
-
4
or add to it — and recite the Quran with measured recitation.
-
5
Indeed We will cast upon you a weighty word.
-
6
Indeed the rising by night is stronger in impression and more upright in speech.
-
7
Indeed for you by day there is prolonged occupation.
-
8
And remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him with complete devotion.
-
9
Lord of the east and the west; there is no god but Him, so take Him as Guardian.
-
10
And be patient over what they say, and leave them with a gracious leaving.
-
11
And leave Me with the deniers, those of ease and comfort, and give them respite for a little while.
-
12
Indeed with Us are shackles and Hellfire,
-
13
and food that chokes, and a painful punishment —
-
14
on the Day the earth and the mountains will quake, and the mountains will become a heap of shifting sand.
-
15
Indeed We have sent to you a messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent to Pharaoh a messenger.
-
16
But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure.
-
17
Then how will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, against a Day that will turn children grey-haired?
-
18
The sky will be split apart by it. His promise is always fulfilled.
-
19
Indeed this is a reminder; so whoever wills may take a way to his Lord.

Indeed your Lord knows that you stand [in prayer] nearly two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or a third of it, and [so do] a group of those with you. And God determines the night and the day. He knows that you will not be able to keep count of it, so He has turned to you [in mercy]. So recite what is easy of the Quran. He knows that there will be among you those who are ill, and others travelling through the land seeking of the bounty of God, and others fighting in the cause of God. So recite what is easy of it, and establish the prayer and give the alms and lend God a goodly loan. And whatever good you send ahead for yourselves, you will find it with God, better and greater in reward. And ask forgiveness of God. Indeed God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
