The Cloaked OneHow to read the Hangul
الرَّحْمَٰنِ르r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀
- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).
How to read the Hangul
beginning the Christ salvation
- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
Classified as revealed in the Meccan period, this surah opens with the call 'O you who are cloaked, arise and warn,' followed by brief commands to magnify the Lord, purify one's garments, avoid uncleanness and be patient. It then describes a man given abundant wealth and sons who still wanted more, and who, after deliberating, frowned and dismissed the message as 'magic handed down' and the word of a human being; he is told he will be driven into Saqar. The surah explains that the nineteen keepers of the Fire are a trial for disbelievers and a means for believers to grow in faith. Swearing by the moon, the night and the dawn, it states that every soul is held in pledge for what it has earned, and depicts those in Saqar admitting they did not pray or feed the poor. It ends by comparing those who turn from the reminder to frightened donkeys fleeing a lion.

The name The name comes from verse 1, which addresses the Prophet as 'you who are cloaked.'
-
1
O you who are cloaked,
-
2
arise and warn,
-
3
and your Lord — magnify,
-
4
and your garments — purify,
-
5
and uncleanness — avoid,
-
6
and do not confer favour to gain more,
-
7
and for your Lord be patient.
-
8
For when the Trumpet is sounded,
-
9
that Day will be a difficult day,
-
10
for the disbelievers not easy.
-
11
Leave Me with the one I created alone,
-
12
and to whom I granted extensive wealth,
-
13
and sons present [with him],
-
14
and spread [everything] before him, smoothing [his way].
-
15
Then he desires that I should add more.
-
16
By no means! Indeed he has been stubborn toward Our signs.
-
17
I will make him climb a hard ascent.
-
18
Indeed he thought and deliberated.
-
19
So may he be destroyed, how he deliberated!
-
20
Then may he be destroyed, how he deliberated!
-
21
Then he looked;
-
22
then he frowned and scowled;
-
23
then he turned back and was arrogant,
-
24
and said, "This is nothing but magic handed down.
-
25
This is nothing but the word of a human being."
-
26
I will drive him into Saqar.
-
27
And what will make you know what Saqar is?
-
28
It spares nothing and leaves nothing,
-
29
scorching the skin.
-
30
Over it are nineteen.
-
31
And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels, and We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve — so that those who were given the Book may be certain, and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who were given the Book and the believers may not doubt, and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers may say, "What does God intend by this as an example?" Thus God leaves astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it is nothing but a reminder for humanity.
-
32
No! By the moon,
-
33
and the night when it departs,
-
34
and the morning when it brightens,
-
35
indeed it is one of the greatest [calamities],
-
36
as a warning to humanity,
-
37
to whoever among you wills to advance or to lag behind.
-
38
Every soul is held in pledge for what it has earned,
-
39
except the companions of the right,
-
40
[who will be] in Gardens, asking one another
-
41
about the wicked:
-
42
"What led you into Saqar?"
-
43
They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,
-
44
nor did we feed the poor,
-
45
and we used to indulge [in falsehood] with those who indulged,
-
46
and we used to deny the Day of Judgement,
-
47
until there came to us the certainty."
-
48
Then no intercession from any intercessor will help them.
-
49
Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from the reminder,
-
50
as if they were frightened donkeys
-
51
fleeing from a lion?
-
52
Rather, every one of them wants to be given scrolls spread open.
-
53
No indeed! The truth is they have no fear of the Hereafter.
-
54
By no means! Indeed it is a reminder.
-
55
So whoever wills may remember it.
-
56
Yet they will take no heed unless God so wills. It is He who deserves to be held in awe, and He who is entitled to forgive.
