- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
Classified as revealed in the Medinan period and addressing the Prophet, this surah begins by instructing that divorce be timed to the waiting period and that the period be counted, and that women not be expelled from their homes during it. When the term ends, the couple are either to stay together or part in a fitting manner, with two just witnesses. It sets the waiting period at three months for women past or not yet of menstruation and until delivery for pregnant women. It then requires that divorced women be housed and supported according to one's means and paid if they nurse a child, noting that God asks of no one more than He has given. Throughout, it repeats that whoever is mindful of God will be given a way out and provision from unexpected places, and it ends with towns that rebelled and the creation of seven heavens.

1
O Prophet, when you [believers] divorce women, divorce them at [the start of] their waiting period, and keep count of the waiting period, and be mindful of God, your Lord. Do not expel them from their houses, nor should they leave, unless they commit a clear indecency. These are the limits set by God, and whoever transgresses the limits of God has wronged himself. You do not know; perhaps God will bring about some new situation after that.
-
2
Then when they have reached their term, either keep them in a fitting manner or part with them in a fitting manner. And call to witness two just men from among you, and give the testimony [uprightly] for God. That is what is urged upon whoever believes in God and the Last Day. And whoever is mindful of God, He will make a way out for him,
-

and provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever puts his trust in God, He is sufficient for him. Indeed God accomplishes His purpose. God has already set a measure for everything.
-
4
And those of your women who have despaired of menstruation — if you are in doubt, their waiting period is three months — and [also for] those who have not menstruated. And for those who are pregnant, their term is until they deliver their burden. And whoever is mindful of God, He will make his matter easy for him.
-
5
That is the command of God, which He has sent down to you. And whoever is mindful of God, He will remove from him his misdeeds and make great his reward.
-
6
Lodge them where you dwell, according to your means, and do not harm them in order to make things hard for them. And if they are pregnant, spend on them until they deliver their burden. Then if they nurse [the child] for you, give them their payment, and consult together in a fitting manner. But if you make difficulties for each other, then another woman will nurse [the child] for him.
-
7
Whoever has plenty should spend out of his plenty, and whoever has limited means should spend from what God has granted him. God asks of no one more than what He has granted them. After difficulty God will bring ease.
-
8
And how many a town rebelled against the command of its Lord and His messengers, so We called it to a severe account and punished it with a terrible punishment.
-
9
So it tasted the evil result of its conduct, and the outcome of its conduct was loss.
-
10
God has prepared for them a severe punishment. So be mindful of God, O people of understanding who have believed. God has already sent down to you a reminder:
-
11
a messenger reciting to you the verses of God, making things clear, so that He may bring those who believe and do righteous deeds out of darkness into light. And whoever believes in God and does righteous deeds, He will admit him into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide therein forever. God has made excellent provision for him.

12
It is God who created seven heavens, and of the earth the like of them. The command descends among them, so that you may know that God has power over all things, and that God encompasses all things in knowledge.
