⏳ Patience (Sabr)
Patience (sabr) is one of the virtues the Quran urges most often. In our translation it appears as “patience” or “bearing patiently”, and in the Quran’s usage it means more than enduring pain: it is the steadiness that holds to the right way in the middle of a trial. The Quran repeats that “God is with those who are patient” and presents patience, alongside prayer, as a way of seeking God’s help.
The Quran says that people will be tested with fear and hunger and with loss of wealth, lives and fruits, and it gives good news to those who remain patient: blessings, mercy, and a reward given in full, without measure. Figures such as the father of Joseph, who meets the loss of his son with patience, and Job, who calls out to his Lord in his suffering, appear as examples of that patience.
Patience is also stressed in dealings between people. Repelling evil with what is better, choosing patience over retaliation, and urging one another to patience are all described as matters that call for firm resolve.
