この章について
Classed as a Meccan sura, it opens by asking whether people find it strange that revelation came to a man from among them, and points to the creation of the heavens and the earth in six days and the ordered courses of the sun and moon as signs. It observes that people call on God in distress, as on a ship in a storm, and forget Him once rescued, and it compares worldly life to plants that flourish after rain and are suddenly cut down. The Quran is defended as no human invention, with a challenge to produce a single sura like it. After describing the allies of God, who have no fear or grief, the sura recounts Noah, then Moses and Aaron before Pharaoh, who declares belief only as he is drowning. It mentions the people of Jonah, the one town whose faith saved it, and ends with a call to follow the revelation patiently.
- Doubts about revelation
- Signs in creation
- The allies of God
- Moses and Pharaoh
- The people of Jonah
名前の由来 The name comes from verse 98, which mentions the people of Jonah as the one town whose belief spared it from punishment.

1
Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the wise Book.
-
2
Is it a wonder to people that We have revealed to a man from among them, “Warn the people, and give good news to those who believe that they will have a firm footing of truth with their Lord”? The disbelievers say, “This is clearly a sorcerer.”
-
3
Your Lord is God, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then established Himself on the Throne, directing every matter. There is no intercessor except after His permission. That is God, your Lord, so worship Him. Will you not take heed?
-
4
To Him is your return, all of you—the promise of God is true. He begins creation and then repeats it, so that He may justly repay those who believe and do righteous deeds. But those who disbelieve will have a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment because they used to disbelieve.
-
5
It is He who made the sun a radiance and the moon a light, and determined phases for it, so that you may know the number of years and the reckoning [of time]. God did not create this except in truth. He makes the signs clear for a people who know.
-
6
Truly, in the way night and day succeed each other, and in all that God has made in the heavens and the earth, there are signs for people who keep God in mind.
-
7
Those who do not expect to meet Us, who are content with the life of this world and feel secure in it, and those who are heedless of Our signs—
-
8
their refuge is the Fire because of what they used to earn.
-
9
Those who believe and do righteous deeds—their Lord guides them by their faith. Rivers will flow beneath them in the Gardens of bliss.
-
10
Their call in it will be, “Glory be to You, O God,” and their greeting in it will be, “Peace,” and the last of their call will be, “Praise be to God, Lord of all the worlds.”
-
11
If God were to hasten evil for people as they wish to hasten good, their term would already have been decreed for them. But We leave those who do not expect to meet Us wandering blindly in their transgression.
-
12
When harm touches a person, he calls on Us, lying on his side, sitting, or standing. But when We remove his harm from him, he passes on as if he had never called on Us for a harm that touched him. Thus is what they used to do made to seem fair to those who exceed all bounds.
-
13
We destroyed generations before you when they did wrong, when their messengers came to them with clear proofs and they would not believe. Thus do We repay the criminal people.
-
14
Then We made you successors on the earth after them, to see how you would act.
-
15
When Our verses are recited to them as clear proofs, those who do not expect to meet Us say, “Bring a Quran other than this, or change it.” Say, “It is not for me to change it of my own accord. I only follow what is revealed to me. I fear, if I disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day.”
-
16
Say, “Had God willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you. I lived among you a lifetime before it. Will you not use reason?”
-
17
Who does greater wrong than one who invents a lie about God or denies His signs? The criminals will not succeed.
-
18
They worship besides God what neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say, “These are our intercessors with God.” Say, “Would you inform God of something He does not know in the heavens or on the earth?” Glory be to Him, and exalted is He above what they associate [with Him].
-
19
Mankind was nothing but a single community; then they differed. Had it not been for a word that had already gone forth from your Lord, it would have been judged between them concerning what they differ about.
-
20
They say, “Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?” Say, “The unseen belongs only to God. So wait; I too am waiting with you.”
-
21
When We let people taste mercy after some adversity has touched them, at once they plot against Our signs. Say, “God is swifter in planning.” Our messengers record whatever you plot.
-
22
It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea, until, when you are in ships and they sail with [the people] in a good wind and they rejoice in it, a stormy wind comes upon it, and waves come at them from every side, and they think they are surrounded. They call on God, devoting their religion sincerely to Him, “If You save us from this, we will surely be among the grateful.”
-
23
But when He saves them, at once they commit injustice on the earth without right. O people, your injustice is only against yourselves—[it is] the enjoyment of the life of this world. Then to Us is your return, and We will inform you of what you used to do.
-
24
The likeness of the life of this world is only like water that We send down from the sky, with which the plants of the earth mingle—from which people and cattle eat—until, when the earth has taken on its adornment and is beautified, and its people think they have power over it, Our command comes to it by night or by day, and We make it a harvested field, as if it had not flourished the day before. Thus do We make the signs clear for a people who reflect.
-
25
God calls to the Home of Peace and guides whom He wills to a straight path.
-
26
For those who do good is the best [reward], and more. Neither dust nor humiliation will cover their faces. They are the companions of the Garden; they will remain in it forever.
-
27
But those who have earned evil deeds—the recompense of an evil deed is its like, and humiliation will cover them. They will have no protector from God. It will be as if their faces were covered with pieces of the dark night. They are the companions of the Fire; they will remain in it forever.
-
28
On the Day We gather them all together, We will say to those who associated partners [with God], “Stay in your place, you and your partners.” Then We will separate them, and their partners will say, “It was not us that you worshipped.
-
29
God is witness enough between us and you: we knew nothing of your worshipping [us].”
-
30
There every soul will be tested by what it sent ahead, and they will be returned to God, their true Master, and what they used to invent will abandon them.
-
31
Say, “Who provides for you from the sky and the earth? Or who controls hearing and sight? And who brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living? And who directs every matter?” They will say, “God.” Then say, “Will you not be mindful of Him?”
-
32
That is God, your true Lord. What is there after the truth except error? How then are you turned away?
-
33
Thus the word of your Lord has come true against those who were defiantly disobedient, that they will not believe.
-
34
Say, “Is there among your partners anyone who begins creation and then repeats it?” Say, “God begins creation and then repeats it. How then are you deluded?”
-
35
Say, “Is there among your partners anyone who guides to the truth?” Say, “God guides to the truth. Is He who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed, or one who cannot find the way unless he is guided? What is wrong with you? How do you judge?”
-
36
Most of them follow nothing but conjecture. Conjecture is of no use at all against the truth. God knows well what they do.
-
37
This Quran is not such as could be invented by anyone other than God. Rather, it is a confirmation of what came before it and a detailed explanation of the Book, in which there is no doubt, from the Lord of all the worlds.
-
38
Or do they say, “He has invented it”? Say, “Then bring a sura like it, and call on whomever you can besides God, if you are truthful.”
-
39
No, they have denied what they could not encompass in knowledge, and whose fulfillment has not yet come to them. Thus did those before them deny. So see what was the end of the wrongdoers.
-
40
Among them are some who believe in it, and among them are some who do not believe in it. Your Lord knows best those who spread corruption.
-
41
If they deny you, say, “I have my deeds and you have your deeds. You are free of what I do, and I am free of what you do.”
-
42
Among them are some who listen to you. But can you make the deaf hear, even though they do not use reason?
-
43
And among them are some who look at you. But can you guide the blind, even though they do not see?
-
44
God does not wrong people in the least, but people wrong themselves.
-
45
On the Day He gathers them, [it will seem] as if they had stayed [in the world] no more than an hour of a day; they will recognize one another. Those who denied the meeting with God have lost, and they were not rightly guided.
-
46
Whether We show you some of what We promise them or take you [in death before that], to Us is their return; and God is a witness over what they do.
-
47
For every community there is a messenger. When their messenger comes, it is judged between them with justice, and they are not wronged.
-
48
They say, “When will this promise be [fulfilled], if you are truthful?”
-
49
Say, “I have no power to harm or benefit myself, except as God wills. For every community there is a term. When their term comes, they cannot delay it by a single hour, nor can they bring it forward.”
-
50
Say, “Have you considered: if His punishment comes upon you by night or by day, which part of it would the criminals wish to hasten?
-
51
Then, when it has befallen, will you believe in it? Now [you believe], when you used to seek to hasten it?”
-
52
Then it will be said to those who did wrong, “Taste the everlasting punishment. Are you being repaid for anything but what you used to earn?”
-
53
They ask you to tell them, “Is it true?” Say, “Yes, by my Lord, it is surely true, and you cannot escape it.”
-
54
If every soul that did wrong possessed all that is on the earth, it would offer it as ransom. They will conceal their remorse when they see the punishment, and it will be judged between them with justice, and they will not be wronged.
-
55
Truly, to God belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Truly, the promise of God is true, but most of them do not know.
-
56
It is He who brings to life and puts to death, and it is to Him that you shall be brought back.
-
57
O people, there has come to you an admonition from your Lord, a healing for what is in the hearts, and guidance and mercy for the believers.
-
58
Say, “In the bounty of God and in His mercy—in that let them rejoice. It is better than what they amass.”
-
59
Say, “Have you considered the provision God has sent down for you, and you have made some of it unlawful and some lawful?” Say, “Has God given you permission, or do you invent [lies] about God?”
-
60
What will those who invent lies about God think on the Day of Resurrection? God is full of bounty to people, but most of them are not grateful.
-
61
Whatever matter you are engaged in, whatever you recite of the Quran, and whatever deed you [people] do, We are witnesses over you when you are occupied with it. Not even the weight of an atom on the earth or in the heaven escapes your Lord, nor anything smaller than that or greater, but it is in a clear Record.
-
62
Truly, the allies of God—there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve—
-
63
those who believe and are mindful of God.
-
64
Glad tidings are theirs in this present life and in the Hereafter. The words of God never change. That is the supreme success.
-
65
Do not let their words grieve you. All might belongs to God. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
-
66
Truly, to God belongs whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth. Those who call on partners besides God follow nothing. They follow nothing but conjecture, and they only guess.
-
67
It is He who made for you the night to rest in and the day for seeing. In that are signs for a people who listen.
-
68
They say, “God has taken a son.” Glory be to Him! He is Self-Sufficient. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. You have no authority for this. Do you say about God what you do not know?
-
69
Say, “Those who fabricate lies against God will never prosper.”
-
70
[It is only] brief enjoyment in this world; then to Us is their return, then We will make them taste the severe punishment because they used to disbelieve.
-
71
Recite to them the story of Noah, when he said to his people, “O my people, if my standing [among you] and my reminding [you] of the signs of God have become hard for you to bear—in God I have put my trust. So agree on your plan, you and your partners; then let your plan not be obscure to you; then carry it out against me and give me no respite.
-
72
But if you turn away, I have not asked you for any reward. My reward is only from God, and I have been commanded to be one of the Muslims.”
-
73
But they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship and made them successors, and We drowned those who denied Our signs. So see what was the end of those who had been warned.
-
74
Then after him We sent messengers to their peoples, and they came to them with clear proofs, but they would not believe in what they had denied before. Thus do We seal the hearts of the transgressors.
-
75
Then after them We sent Moses and Aaron with Our signs to Pharaoh and his leaders, but they were arrogant and were a criminal people.
-
76
When the truth came to them from Us, they said, “This is clearly sorcery.”
-
77
Moses said, “Do you say [this] about the truth when it has come to you? Is this sorcery? Sorcerers do not succeed.”
-
78
They said, “Have you come to us to turn us away from what we found our fathers following, so that the two of you may have greatness in the land? We will not believe in you two.”
-
79
And Pharaoh said, “Bring me every skilled sorcerer.”
-
80
When the sorcerers came, Moses said to them, “Throw whatever you are going to throw.”
-
81
When they had thrown, Moses said, “What you have brought is sorcery. God will surely bring it to nothing. God does not set right the work of those who spread corruption.
-
82
And God establishes the truth by His words, even though the criminals dislike it.”
-
83
But none believed in Moses except some youths of his people, in fear of Pharaoh and their leaders, lest they persecute them. Pharaoh was indeed haughty in the land, and he was among those who exceed all bounds.
-
84
Moses said, “My people, if you have faith in God, rely on Him, if you have indeed submitted.”
-
85
They said, “In God we have put our trust. Our Lord, do not make us a trial for the wrongdoing people,
-
86
and save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people.”
-
87
We revealed to Moses and his brother, “Settle your people in houses in Egypt, make your houses places of prayer, and keep up the prayer. And give good news to the believers.”
-
88
Moses said, “Our Lord, You have given Pharaoh and his leaders splendor and wealth in the life of this world, our Lord, so that they lead [people] astray from Your path. Our Lord, wipe out their wealth and harden their hearts, so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment.”
-
89
He said, “Your prayer has been answered, [both of you]. So stand firm, and do not follow the way of those who do not know.”
-
90
We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and hostility, until, when drowning overtook him, he said, “I believe that there is no god but the One in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am one of the Muslims.”
-
91
“Now? When you disobeyed before and were among those who spread corruption?
-
92
So today We will preserve your body, so that you may be a sign for those after you.” Yet many people are heedless of Our signs.
-
93
We settled the Children of Israel in a sound place of settlement and provided them with good things. They did not differ until knowledge came to them. Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning what they used to differ about.
-
94
If you have any doubt about what We have revealed to you, then ask those who read the Book before your time. The truth has truly reached you from your Lord, so never be one of the doubters.
-
95
And never be one of those who reject God's signs, for then you would be one of the lost.
-
96
Those against whom the word of your Lord has come true will not believe,
-
97
even if every sign comes to them, until they see the painful punishment.
-
98
If only there had been a town that believed and whose faith benefited it—except the people of Jonah. When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in the life of this world and let them enjoy [life] for a time.
-
99
Had your Lord willed, all who are on the earth would have believed, every one of them. Will you then compel people until they become believers?
-
100
No soul can believe except by the permission of God, and He places defilement upon those who do not use reason.
-
101
Say, “Look at what is in the heavens and the earth.” But signs and warnings are of no use to a people who do not believe.
-
102
Are they waiting for anything but the like of the days of those who passed away before them? Say, “Then wait; I too am waiting with you.”
-
103
Then We save Our messengers and those who believe. Thus it is a duty upon Us to save the believers.
-
104
Say, “O people, if you are in doubt about my religion, [know that] I do not worship those you worship besides God; rather, I worship God, who takes your souls. And I have been commanded to be one of the believers,
-
105
and [it has been said to me,] ‘Set your face toward the religion, upright in faith, and never be one of the idolaters.
-
106
And do not call, besides God, on what can neither benefit you nor harm you. If you did, you would then be one of the wrongdoers.’”
-
107
If God touches you with harm, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends good for you, there is none who can turn back His bounty. He causes it to reach whom He wills of His servants. He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
-
108
Say, “O people, the truth has come to you from your Lord. So whoever is guided is guided only for [the good of] his own soul, and whoever goes astray goes astray only to its loss. I am not a guardian over you.”
-
109
And follow what is revealed to you, and be patient until God judges. He is the best of judges.
