Surah
About this surah
Opening with Ha Mim, the surah points to signs for believers and thinkers in the heavens and earth, in human creation and the creatures scattered on earth, in the alternation of night and day, and in rain and the shifting winds. It warns those who hear God's verses and turn away in arrogance or mockery, and reminds people that the sea and everything in the heavens and earth have been made subservient to them. It says the Children of Israel were given the Book and prophethood but divided out of rivalry, and tells the Prophet to follow the clear way set for him. It answers the one who takes his own desire as his god, and those who deny resurrection, saying nothing destroys them but time. It then describes the Day when every community will be on its knees, called to its own record, and closes with praise of the Lord of the heavens and the earth.

-
1
Ha Mim.
-
2
The sending down of the Book is from God, the Almighty, the All-Wise.
-
3
In the heavens and the earth are signs for the believers.
-
4
And in your creation, and in the living creatures He scatters [on earth], are signs for people of certain faith.
-
5
And in the alternation of night and day, and the provision God sends down from the sky with which He revives the earth after its death, and in the shifting of the winds, are signs for people who understand.
-
6
These are the verses of God which We recite to you in truth. Then in what message, after God and His verses, will they believe?
-
7
Woe to every sinful liar,
-
8
who hears the verses of God recited to him, then persists in arrogance as if he had not heard them. So give him news of a painful punishment.
-
9
And when he learns anything of Our verses, he takes them in mockery. They will have a humiliating punishment.
-
10
Ahead of them is Hell. What they have earned will avail them nothing, nor will those they took as protectors besides God. And they will have a tremendous punishment.
-
11
This is guidance. And those who disbelieve in the verses of their Lord will have a painful punishment of foul torment.
-
12
It is God who has made the sea subservient to you, so that ships may sail through it by His command, and that you may seek of His bounty, and that you may be grateful.
-
13
And He has made subservient to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, all from Him. In that are signs for people who reflect.
-
14
Tell those who believe to forgive those who do not look forward to the Days of God, so that He may repay a people for what they used to earn.
-
15
Whoever does righteousness, it is for his own soul; and whoever does evil, it is against it. Then to your Lord you will be returned.
-
16
To the Children of Israel We gave the Book, sound judgement, and prophethood; We sustained them with wholesome provisions and preferred them over all the worlds.
-
17
And We gave them clear proofs concerning the matter. They did not differ until after knowledge had come to them, out of rivalry among themselves. Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that in which they used to differ.
-
18
Then We set you on a clear way of the matter, so follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know.
-
19
They will never avail you anything against God. The wrongdoers are allies of one another, but God is the Ally of the God-fearing.
-
20
This is [a source of] insight for mankind, and guidance and mercy for people of certain faith.
-
21
Or do those who commit evil deeds think that We will make them like those who believe and do righteous deeds, equal in their life and their death? How evil is their judgement!
-
22
God created the heavens and the earth with truth, so that every soul may be repaid for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.
-
23
Have you seen the one who takes his own desire as his god, whom God has left astray knowingly, sealing his hearing and his heart and placing a covering over his sight? Who then will guide him after God? Will you not take heed?
-
24
And they say, "There is nothing but our life in this world. We die and we live, and nothing destroys us except time." They have no knowledge of that; they only conjecture.
-
25
And when Our clear verses are recited to them, their only argument is to say, "Bring back our forefathers, if you are truthful."
-
26
Say, "God gives you life, then causes you to die, then He will gather you to the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. But most people do not know."
-
27
To God belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. And on the Day the Hour comes, on that Day those who dealt in falsehood will be the losers.
-
28
And you will see every community on its knees. Every community will be called to its record: "This Day you will be repaid for what you used to do.
-
29
This is Our record, which speaks against you with truth. We were having recorded whatever you used to do."
-
30
As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is the clear triumph.
-
31
But as for those who disbelieved: "Were not My verses recited to you, but you were arrogant and were a guilty people?
-
32
And when it was said, 'The promise of God is true, and there is no doubt about the Hour,' you said, 'We do not know what the Hour is. We think it is only an assumption, and we are not convinced.'"
-
33
And the evils of what they did will appear to them, and what they used to mock will close in on them.
-
34
And it will be said, "Today We forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours. Your refuge is the Fire, and you have no helpers.
-
35
That is because you took the verses of God in mockery, and the life of this world deceived you." So today they will not be brought out of it, nor will they be allowed to make amends.
-
36
Praise, then, is God's alone — Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, Lord of all the worlds.
-
37
To Him belongs [all] majesty in the heavens and the earth, and He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.
