この章について
Classed as a Medinan sura, it opens by declaring that God sent down the Book confirming the Torah and the Gospel before it, and notes that some verses are precise while others bear more than one meaning. It then tells how the wife of Imran dedicated her unborn child, how Mary grew up in Zechariah's care, how John was promised to the aged Zechariah, and how the angels announced Jesus to Mary, followed by Jesus's signs and his disciples. The People of the Book are invited to a common word: to worship none but God. Abraham is described as neither Jew nor Christian but upright in faith. The second half looks back on Badr and on a later battle where the believers wavered and fled, drawing lessons about patience, trust in God and taking counsel together. It ends with the prayer of those who reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth.
- Scripture and earlier revelation

名前の由来 The name comes from verse 33, where God chooses the family of Imran, and from the story of Imran's wife that follows in verse 35.

God—there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining.
-
3
He has sent down to you the Book with the truth, confirming what came before it, and He sent down the Torah and the Gospel
-
4
before, as guidance for people, and He sent down the Criterion. Indeed, those who disbelieve in the signs of God will have a severe punishment. And God is Almighty, Lord of retribution.
-
5
Indeed, nothing is hidden from God on the earth or in the heaven.
-
6
He shapes you in the wombs in whatever way He pleases. No god is there except Him, the Almighty, the All-Wise.
-
7
It is He who has sent down to you the Book. In it are verses that are precise in meaning—they are the foundation of the Book—and others that are open to more than one meaning. As for those in whose hearts is deviation, they follow what is ambiguous in it, seeking discord and seeking its interpretation. But none knows its interpretation except God. And those firmly grounded in knowledge say, “We believe in it; all of it is from our Lord.” And none take heed except people of understanding.
-
8
“Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself. You are indeed the Bestower.
-
9
Our Lord, You will surely gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, God does not break His promise.”
-
10
Indeed, those who disbelieve—neither their wealth nor their children will avail them anything against God, and it is they who will be fuel for the Fire,
-
11
just like the way of Pharaoh’s people and those before them. They denied Our signs, so God seized them for their sins. And God is severe in retribution.
-
12
Say to those who disbelieve, “You will be overcome and gathered into Hell—what a wretched resting place!”
-
13
There was already a sign for you in the two companies that met [in battle]: one company fighting in the way of God and the other disbelieving. They saw them as twice their number with their own eyes. And God supports with His help whomever He wills. In that is surely a lesson for those who have eyes to see.
-
14
Made attractive to people is the love of desires—women and sons, heaped-up hoards of gold and silver, branded horses, livestock and farmland. That is the enjoyment of the life of this world, but with God is the best place of return.
-
15
Say, “Shall I tell you of what is better than that? For those who are mindful [of God] are Gardens with their Lord, beneath which rivers flow, abiding in them forever, and purified spouses, and the good pleasure of God.” And God sees His servants.
-
16
[They are] those who say, “Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire”—
-
17
the patient, the truthful, the devoutly obedient, those who spend [in God’s way], and those who seek forgiveness in the hours before dawn.
-
18
God bears witness that there is no god but Him, as do the angels and those endowed with knowledge, upholding justice. There is no god but Him, the Almighty, the All-Wise.
-
19
Indeed, the religion in the sight of God is Islam. Those who were given the Book did not differ except after knowledge had come to them, out of rivalry among themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the signs of God—God is swift in reckoning.
-
20
So if they argue with you, say, “I have submitted my face to God, and so have those who follow me.” And say to those who were given the Book and to the unlettered, “Have you submitted?” If they submit, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, your duty is only to convey [the message]. And God sees His servants.
-
21
Those who disbelieve in the signs of God, kill the prophets without right, and kill those among people who command justice—give them news of a painful punishment.
-
22
They are the ones whose deeds have come to nothing in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers.
-
23
Have you not considered those who were given a portion of the Book? They are invited to the Book of God so that it may judge between them, yet a party of them turns away, averse.
-
24
That is because they say, “The Fire will not touch us except for a limited number of days.” What they used to invent has deluded them in their religion.
-
25
So how will it be when We gather them for a Day about which there is no doubt, and every soul is paid in full for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged?
-
26
Say, “O God, Possessor of all sovereignty, You hand authority to whomever You will and strip it from whomever You will; You raise to honour whomever You will and bring low whomever You will. All good lies in Your hand. You have power over everything.
-
27
You make the night pass into the day and the day pass into the night; You draw the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living; and You provide for whomever You will beyond all reckoning.”
-
28
Let the believers not take disbelievers as allies in preference to believers. Whoever does so has no tie with God at all—unless it is to shield yourselves from them as a precaution. God bids you beware of Him, and to God is the final return.
-
29
Say, “Whether you hide what is in your breasts or bring it into the open, God knows it. He knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and God has power over all things.”
-
30
On the Day every soul finds set before it whatever good it has done, it will wish that between itself and the evil it has done there lay a vast distance. God bids you beware of Him, and God is kind to [His] servants.
-
31
Say, “If you love God, then follow me; God will love you and forgive you your sins. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
-
32
Say, “Obey God and the Messenger.” But if they turn their backs—God does not love the disbelievers.
-
33
God chose Adam and Noah, the family of Abraham and the family of Imran, above all the worlds—
-
34
descendants, each line springing from the other. And God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
-
35
[Remember] when the wife of Imran said, “My Lord, I have vowed to You what is in my womb, set apart [for Your service], so accept it from me. You alone are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”
-
36
Then, when she had delivered her, she said, “My Lord, I have delivered a girl”—and God knew better what she had delivered—“and a male is not like a female. I have named her Mary, and I commit her and her offspring to Your protection from Satan the outcast.”
-
37
Her Lord received her with a gracious welcome, made her grow up beautifully, and placed her in Zechariah's care. Each time Zechariah went in to her in the sanctuary, he found food with her. He said, “Mary, where has this come to you from?” She said, “It is from God. God provides for whomever He wills beyond all reckoning.”
-
38
There and then Zechariah called on his Lord. He said, “My Lord, grant me from Your own presence good offspring. You hear every prayer.”
-
39
Then the angels called to him as he stood praying in the sanctuary: “God gives you glad news of John, who will confirm a word from God—a man of dignity, chaste, and a prophet from among the righteous.”
-
40
He said, “My Lord, how can I have a son when old age has already reached me and my wife is barren?” He said, “That is how it is: God does whatever He wills.”
-
41
He said, “My Lord, give me a sign.” He said, “Your sign is that for three days you will not speak to anyone except by gestures. Remember your Lord much, and glorify [Him] in the evening and the early morning.”
-
42
And [remember] when the angels said, “Mary, God has chosen you and made you pure, and has chosen you above the women of all the worlds.
-
43
Mary, be devout before your Lord, prostrate yourself, and bow down together with those who bow.”
-
44
This is part of the news of the unseen which We reveal to you. You were not among them when they cast their pens [as lots] over which of them should take charge of Mary, nor were you among them when they quarrelled.
-
45
When the angels said, “Mary, God gives you glad news of a word from Him: his name will be the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, honoured in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near [to God].
-
46
He will speak to people in the cradle and in his mature years, and he will be one of the righteous.”
-
47
She said, “My Lord, how am I to have a son when no human being has ever touched me?” He said, “So it will be: God brings into being whatever He wills. Whenever He settles a matter, He simply says to it, ‘Be,’ and it comes to be.
-
48
And He will teach him the Book and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel,
-
49
and [send him as] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [to say]: ‘I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. Out of clay I shape for you the likeness of a bird, then I breathe into it, and by God's leave it becomes a bird. By God's leave I heal the one born blind and the leper, and I bring the dead back to life. And I can tell you what you eat and what you store away in your homes. Surely in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.
-
50
[I have come] confirming the Torah that came before me, and to make lawful for you some of what was forbidden to you. I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so be mindful of God and obey me.
-
51
My Lord and your Lord alike is God, so serve Him: here is a path that is straight.’”
-
52
When Jesus became aware of disbelief among them, he said, “Who will stand by me as helpers for God?” The disciples answered, “We are God's helpers. We believe in God—bear witness that we are Muslims.
-
53
Our Lord, we believe in what You have sent down and we follow the Messenger, so write us down among those who bear witness.”
-
54
They plotted, and God plotted [against them]; and God is the best of those who plot.
-
55
[Remember] when God said, “Jesus, I will take you to Myself and raise you up to Me, and cleanse you of those who disbelieve, and I will set those who follow you above those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me you will all return, and I will judge between you in what you used to differ over.
-
56
As for those who disbelieve, I will punish them with a severe punishment in this world and in the Hereafter, and they will have no one to help them.
-
57
As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, He will pay them their rewards in full. And God does not love the wrongdoers.”
-
58
This is what We recite to you of the verses and of the Reminder full of wisdom.
-
59
In the sight of God, Jesus is like Adam: He formed him from dust, then said to him, “Be,” and he was.
-
60
The truth comes from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters.
-
61
If anyone argues with you about him after the knowledge that has come to you, say, “Come, let us summon our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, and then pray humbly and call down God's curse on whichever [of us] are lying.”
-
62
This is indeed the true account. There is no god but God, and God—He alone is the Almighty, the All-Wise.
-
63
But if they turn away, God knows well those who spread corruption.
-
64
Say, “People of the Book, come to terms that are just between us and you: that we worship none but God, associate nothing with Him, and do not take one another as lords besides God.” And if they turn away, say, “Bear witness that we are Muslims.”
-
65
People of the Book, why do you argue over Abraham, when the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed until after him? Do you not understand?
-
66
Look at you! You have argued over matters you had some knowledge of; why then argue over what you know nothing about? God knows, while you do not.
-
67
Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian; he was upright in faith, a Muslim, and he was not one of the idolaters.
-
68
Those with the strongest claim to Abraham are the people who followed him, and this Prophet, and those who believe. God is the protector of the believers.
-
69
Some of the People of the Book wish they could mislead you, but they mislead only themselves, and they do not see it.
-
70
People of the Book, why do you reject God's signs when you yourselves see them to be true?
-
71
People of the Book, why do you cloak the truth in falsehood and knowingly hide the truth?
-
72
A group among the People of the Book said, “Believe in what has been sent down to the believers at the start of the day and deny it at the day's end; perhaps they will turn back.
-
73
And put your trust only in those who follow your religion.” Say, “True guidance is God's guidance.” [Do you fear] that someone else might be given the like of what you were given, or that they might argue against you before your Lord? Say, “All favour lies in God's hand; He gives it to whomever He wills. God is Boundless, All-Knowing.”
-
74
He singles out for His mercy whomever He wills, and God is the Possessor of immense favour.
-
75
Among the People of the Book is one who, if you entrust him with a heap of gold, will hand it back to you; and among them is one who, if you entrust him with a single dinar, will not return it unless you keep standing over him. That is because they say, “We owe nothing to the unlettered [gentiles].” They speak lies about God, and they know it.
-
76
Not so! Whoever keeps his pledge and is mindful of God—God loves the God-fearing.
-
77
Those who trade away God's covenant and their own oaths for a paltry price will have no share in the Hereafter. God will neither speak to them nor look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and a painful punishment awaits them.
-
78
And among them is a party who twist their tongues as they [recite] the Book, so that you would take it to be part of the Book when it is not part of the Book. They say, “This is from God,” though it is not from God. They speak lies about God, and they know it.
-
79
It is not fitting for any human being to whom God gives the Book, sound judgement and prophethood to then say to people, “Be servants of mine instead of God.” Rather [he would say], “Be people devoted to the Lord, in keeping with the Book you have been teaching and the study you have pursued.”
-
80
Nor would he order you to take the angels and the prophets as lords. Would he order you to disbelieve after you have become Muslims?
-
81
And [remember] when God took a firm pledge from the prophets: “Whatever I give you of Book and wisdom—if afterwards a messenger comes to you confirming what you have, you must believe in him and support him.” He said, “Do you affirm this, and do you accept My binding covenant on it?” They said, “We affirm it.” He said, “Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses.”
-
82
Whoever turns away after that—those are the defiantly disobedient.
-
83
Do they seek something other than God's religion, when all who are in the heavens and on the earth have submitted to Him, willingly or unwillingly, and to Him they will be returned?
-
84
Say, “We believe in God and in what has been sent down to us, and in what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, and in what Moses, Jesus and the prophets were given by their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we submit as Muslims.”
-
85
Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.
-
86
How would God guide a people who disbelieved after having believed—after bearing witness that the Messenger is true and after clear proofs had come to them? God does not guide wrongdoing people.
-
87
Their recompense is that the curse of God, of the angels and of all people together rests upon them.
-
88
They will remain under it forever; their punishment will not be lightened, nor will they be granted any delay.
-
89
Except for those who repent after that and set things right—for God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
90
Those who disbelieve after having believed and then sink ever deeper into disbelief—their repentance will never be accepted, and it is they who have gone astray.
-
91
As for those who disbelieve and die as disbelievers, even an earth full of gold would not be accepted from any one of them, were he to offer it as ransom. A painful punishment awaits them, and they will have no one to help them.
-
92
You will never attain true righteousness until you spend [in God's way] from what you love. Whatever you spend, God is fully aware of it.
-
93
All food was lawful to the Children of Israel, except what Israel forbade himself before the Torah was sent down. Say, “Bring the Torah, then, and read it out, if you are telling the truth.”
-
94
Whoever invents lies about God after that—they are the wrongdoers.
-
95
Say, “What God says is true. Follow, then, the creed of Abraham, upright in faith, who was never one of the idolaters.”
-
96
The first house [of worship] set up for people is the one at Bakkah, a blessed place and a guidance for all the worlds.
-
97
In it are clear signs—the Station of Abraham—and whoever enters it is safe. Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to God by all people who are able to make their way there. And whoever disbelieves—God has no need of anyone in all the worlds.
-
98
Say, “People of the Book, why do you disbelieve in the signs of God, while God sees and bears witness to everything you do?”
-
99
Say, “People of the Book, why do you turn those who believe away from God's path, wanting it to be crooked, while you yourselves are witnesses? God is not unaware of what you do.”
-
100
You who believe, if you obey a faction of those who were given the Book, they will turn you back into disbelievers after you have believed.
-
101
And how could you disbelieve, when God's verses are recited to you and His Messenger is in your midst? Whoever clings firmly to God has been guided to a straight path.
-
102
You who believe, be mindful of God as He truly deserves, and do not let death come to you except as Muslims.
-
103
Hold fast, all of you together, to God's rope, and do not split apart. Remember God's favour to you: you were enemies, and He joined your hearts together, so that by His grace you became brothers. You stood on the brink of a pit of the Fire, and He rescued you from it. In this way God makes His signs clear to you, so that you may find guidance.
-
104
Let there be among you a community that calls to what is good, urges what is right and forbids what is wrong. It is they who will prosper.
-
105
And do not be like those who broke apart and fell into dispute after clear proofs had come to them. For them is a tremendous punishment
-
106
on the Day when some faces turn bright and some faces turn dark. As for those whose faces have darkened: “Did you disbelieve after having believed? Then taste the punishment for your disbelief.”
-
107
And as for those whose faces have brightened, they will dwell in God's mercy, remaining in it forever.
-
108
These are God's verses which We recite to you in truth, and God wants no injustice for any in the worlds.
-
109
To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and to God all matters return.
-
110
You have become the finest community raised up for humankind: you urge what is right, forbid what is wrong, and believe in God. Had the People of the Book believed, it would have been better for them. Some of them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.
-
111
They can do you no real harm beyond some hurt; and should they fight you, they will turn their backs to you, and after that no help will come to them.
-
112
Humiliation has been stamped upon them wherever they are come upon, except when held by a rope from God and a rope from people. They have brought upon themselves anger from God, and wretchedness has been stamped upon them. That is because they kept denying the signs of God and killing the prophets with no right to do so. That is for their disobedience and their habit of overstepping limits.
-
113
Not all of them are the same. Among the People of the Book is a community standing upright, who recite the verses of God through the hours of the night as they bow down in prostration.
-
114
They believe in God and the Last Day, urge what is right and forbid what is wrong, and hurry toward good deeds. These are among the righteous.
-
115
Whatever good they do will never go unacknowledged. God has full knowledge of the God-fearing.
-
116
Those who disbelieve—neither their wealth nor their children will be of any use to them at all against God. They are the people of the Fire; in it they will stay forever.
-
117
What they spend in this worldly life is like a wind carrying a biting frost that strikes the crop of a people who wronged themselves and lays it to waste. It is not God who wronged them; rather, it is themselves they wrong.
-
118
You who believe, do not take as close confidants people from outside your own ranks; they will spare no effort to ruin you, and they long for your distress. Hatred has already shown itself from their mouths, and what their hearts conceal is greater still. We have made the signs clear for you, if you would use your reason.
-
119
Look at you: you hold them dear, yet they hold no love for you, and you believe in all of the Book. When they meet you they claim, “We believe,” but once alone they gnaw their fingertips in fury against you. Say, “Perish in your fury!” God knows well what the hearts contain.
-
120
If some good touches you, it pains them; and if some misfortune strikes you, they delight in it. Yet if you are patient and mindful of God, their scheming will not hurt you in the least. God surrounds all that they do.
-
121
[Recall] when you left your family early in the morning to station the believers at their posts for the fighting. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
-
122
[Recall] when two groups among you were on the verge of losing courage, though God was their protector. In God, then, let the believers place their trust.
-
123
God had already helped you to victory at Badr when you were weak and of little account. So be mindful of God, that you may give thanks.
-
124
[Recall] when you were saying to the believers, “Is it not enough for you that your Lord should reinforce you with three thousand angels sent down?”
-
125
Indeed it is! If you stay patient and mindful of God, and they come rushing upon you at this very moment, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels bearing marks.
-
126
God made this only as good news for you and so that your hearts might be put at ease by it. Victory comes from nowhere except from God, the Almighty, the All-Wise—
-
127
so that He might cut off a portion of those who disbelieve, or crush them in disgrace so that they turn back with their hopes dashed.
-
128
The decision is not yours in any way—whether He turns to them in forgiveness or punishes them, for they are indeed wrongdoers.
-
129
To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. He forgives whomever He wills and punishes whomever He wills. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
130
You who believe, do not devour interest, multiplied over and over again, and be mindful of God so that you may succeed.
-
131
Guard yourselves against the Fire that has been made ready for the disbelievers.
-
132
Obey God and the Messenger, so that you may receive mercy.
-
133
Hurry toward forgiveness from your Lord and toward a Garden whose breadth is that of the heavens and the earth, made ready for the God-fearing—
-
134
those who give in times of plenty and of hardship, who hold back their anger and pardon people. God loves those who do good.
-
135
And those who, when they commit a shameful deed or wrong their own souls, remember God and seek forgiveness for their sins—and who forgives sins except God?—and who do not knowingly persist in what they have done.
-
136
For such people the recompense is forgiveness from their Lord and Gardens with rivers flowing beneath, where they will remain forever. How fine is the wage of those who labor!
-
137
Ways [of dealing with nations] have run their course before you. So travel through the land and see what end came to those who called the truth a lie.
-
138
This is a plain statement for humankind, and guidance and counsel for the God-fearing.
-
139
Do not grow faint and do not grieve, for you will have the upper hand if you are believers.
-
140
If a wound has touched you, a like wound has already touched the other side. Such days We pass in turns among people, so that God may make known those who believe and take from among you those who bear witness [with their lives]. God does not love the wrongdoers.
-
141
And so that God may refine those who believe and wipe out the disbelievers.
-
142
Or did you imagine that you would enter the Garden while God had not yet made evident which of you strove hard, nor made evident the steadfast?
-
143
You used to long for death before you came face to face with it; now you have seen it with your own eyes.
-
144
Muhammad is only a Messenger; messengers have passed away before him. So if he were to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels? Whoever turns back on his heels will not harm God in the slightest, and God will reward the grateful.
-
145
No soul can die except by God’s leave, at a term set down in writing. Whoever wants the reward of this world, We give him some of it, and whoever wants the reward of the Hereafter, We give him some of it. And We will reward the grateful.
-
146
How many a prophet has fought with many devoted followers at his side! They did not lose heart at what befell them in the way of God, nor did they weaken or give in. God loves the steadfast.
-
147
Their only words were these: “Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess in our conduct, make our footing firm, and grant us victory over the disbelieving people.”
-
148
So God gave them the reward of this world and the finest reward of the Hereafter. God loves those who do good.
-
149
You who believe, if you obey those who disbelieve, they will turn you back on your heels, and you will turn away as losers.
-
150
Rather, God is your Protector, and He is the best of those who give help.
-
151
We will throw dread into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they have set beside God things for which He never sent down any warrant. The Fire will be their refuge, and wretched indeed is the lodging of the wrongdoers.
-
152
God kept His promise to you when you were cutting them down by His leave—until you wavered, quarreled over the order, and disobeyed after He had shown you what you love. Some of you were after this world and some of you were after the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them in order to test you. Yet He has pardoned you; God is full of grace toward the believers.

153
[Recall] when you were fleeing far, not turning to look at anyone, while the Messenger was calling out to you from your rear. So He paid you back with one sorrow upon another, so that you would not grieve over what slipped from your grasp nor over what befell you. God is well aware of what you do.
-
154
Then, after the sorrow, He sent down upon you a sense of safety—a drowsiness that came over one group of you—while another group, wholly absorbed in their own selves, held untrue thoughts about God, the thinking of the age of ignorance. They were saying, “Is any part of this matter in our hands?” Say, “The matter belongs entirely to God.” They keep hidden within themselves what they do not show you, saying, “Had any part of the matter been in our hands, we would not have been killed here.” Say, “Even if you had remained in your houses, those for whom death in battle had been written would have gone out to the places where they were to fall.” [All this happened] so that God might test what is in your breasts and cleanse what is in your hearts. God knows well what the hearts contain.
-
155
As for those of you who turned away on the day the two hosts met, it was only Satan who caused them to slip, because of some of what they had earned. But God has pardoned them. God is Most Forgiving, Forbearing.
-
156
You who believe, do not be like those who disbelieve and who say of their brothers when they travel through the land or go out to fight, “Had they stayed with us, they would neither have died nor been killed”—so that God makes that a lasting regret in their hearts. It is God who gives life and brings death, and God sees whatever you do.
-
157
Should you be killed for the cause of God, or should you die, forgiveness from God and mercy are better than anything they amass.
-
158
And whether you die or are killed, it is before God that you will be gathered.
-
159
It is through mercy from God that you were gentle with them; had you been coarse and hard-hearted, they would have broken away from around you. So pardon them, seek forgiveness for them, and take counsel with them in the affair. Then, once you have made up your mind, rely on God. God loves those who rely [on Him].
-
160
If God helps you, none can defeat you; but if He forsakes you, who is there to help you besides Him? So in God let the believers place their trust.
-
161
It is not for a prophet to take [from the spoils] dishonestly. Whoever does so will bring what he took on the Day of Resurrection; then every soul will be paid in full for what it earned, and none of them will be wronged.
-
162
Is one who seeks what pleases God like one who has brought God’s wrath upon himself and whose refuge is Hell? What an evil end to reach!
-
163
They stand at differing ranks with God, and God sees what they do.
-
164
God has truly shown favor to the believers in raising among them a Messenger from their own people, who recites His verses to them, purifies them, and teaches them the Book and wisdom, whereas before that they were in plain error.
-
165
And when a disaster struck you—after you had dealt [the enemy] twice as much—did you say, “Where did this come from?” Say, “It came from your own selves.” God has power over all things.
-
166
What struck you on the day the two hosts met was by God’s leave, so that He might make known the believers,
-
167
and make known those who acted as hypocrites. When it was said to them, “Come, fight in the way of God, or at least hold the line,” they said, “If we knew how to fight, we would surely follow you.” That day they were nearer to disbelief than to faith. They say with their mouths what is not in their hearts, and God knows best what they keep hidden.
-
168
They are the ones who sat back and said of their brothers, “Had they obeyed us, they would not have been killed.” Say, “Then turn death away from yourselves, if you are telling the truth.”
-
169
Do not count those slain in the way of God as dead. No—they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision,
-
170
joyful in what God has granted them of His bounty, and taking glad tidings for those still behind them who have not yet joined them: that no fear will come upon them, nor will they grieve.
-
171
They take joy in grace and bounty from God, and in [knowing] that God does not let the reward of the believers go to waste.
-
172
Those who answered the call of God and the Messenger even after injury had struck them—for those of them who did good and were mindful of God there is a mighty reward.
-
173
Those to whom people said, “The people have massed against you, so fear them,” but it only added to their faith, and they said, “God is enough for us; what an excellent One to rely on!”
-
174
So they returned with grace and bounty from God; no harm touched them, and they pursued what pleases God. God is the Possessor of great bounty.
-
175
That was none other than Satan, frightening [you] through his allies. So do not fear them; fear Me, if you are believers.
-
176
Do not let those who race into disbelief cause you grief; they will not harm God in any way. God wills to leave them no share in the Hereafter, and a mighty punishment is theirs.
-
177
Those who have bought disbelief in exchange for faith will not harm God in any way, and a painful punishment is theirs.
-
178
Let those who disbelieve not suppose that the delay We grant them is good for them. We give them time only so that they may add to their sin, and a humiliating punishment is theirs.
-
179
God would not leave the believers in the condition you are in until He sets apart the foul from the pure. Nor would God reveal the unseen to you; rather, God chooses from among His messengers whomever He wills. So believe in God and His messengers. If you believe and are mindful of God, a mighty reward is yours.
-
180
Let those who are stingy with what God has given them of His bounty not imagine it is good for them—no, it is bad for them. What they held back will be hung around their necks like a collar on the Day of Resurrection. To God belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth, and God is well aware of what you do.
-
181
God has heard the words of those who said, “God is poor, and we are rich.” We will record what they said, together with their killing of the prophets without right, and We will say, “Taste the punishment of the scorching Fire.
-
182
That is for what your own hands sent ahead, and because God is never unjust to [His] servants.”
-
183
Those who said, “God has made a covenant with us that we should not believe in any messenger until he brings us an offering that fire devours.” Say, “Messengers came to you before me with clear proofs and with the very thing you mention. Why, then, did you kill them, if you are truthful?”
-
184
If they call you a liar, messengers before you were called liars too, though they came with clear proofs, with written scriptures, and with the Book that gives light.
-
185
Every soul will taste death, and only on the Day of Resurrection will you be paid your wages in full. Whoever is pulled away from the Fire and brought into the Garden has truly won. The life of this world is nothing but an enjoyment of illusion.
-
186
You will surely be tested in your wealth and in your own selves, and you will surely hear much that hurts from those given the Book before you and from those who associate partners [with God]. But if you are patient and mindful of God, that is among the matters that call for firm resolve.
-
187
And [recall] when God took a binding pledge from those who were given the Book: “You must make it plain to people and not hide it.” But they flung it behind their backs and traded it for a small price. How evil is what they acquire!
-
188
Do not suppose that those who delight in what they have done, and love to be praised for what they have not done—do not suppose them to be safe from the punishment. A painful punishment is theirs.
-
189
The kingdom of the heavens and the earth is God's, and God is capable of everything.
-
190
In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the succession of night and day, there are signs for those who have understanding—
-
191
those who remember God while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides, and who ponder the creation of the heavens and the earth: “Our Lord, You did not create all this without purpose. Glory be to You! So shield us from the punishment of the Fire.
-
192
Our Lord, whoever You bring into the Fire, You have truly put to shame, and the wrongdoers will have no one to help them.
-
193
Our Lord, we heard someone calling out to faith—‘Believe in your Lord’—and so we believed. Our Lord, forgive us our sins, erase our bad deeds, and let us die in the company of the righteous.
-
194
Our Lord, give us what You promised us through Your messengers, and do not shame us on the Day of Resurrection. You never go back on Your promise.”
-
195
Their Lord responded to them: “I do not let the deed of any one of you who works go to waste, be it a man or a woman—each of you is from the other. So those who emigrated, who were driven from their homes, who suffered harm for My sake, and who fought and were killed—I will surely erase their bad deeds and bring them into Gardens with rivers flowing beneath, as a reward from God.” And with God is the best of rewards.
-
196
Do not let the comings and goings of the disbelievers throughout the land deceive you.
-
197
It is a small enjoyment; then their refuge is Hell—what an evil place to rest!
-
198
But those who are mindful of their Lord will have Gardens with rivers flowing beneath, where they will stay forever, a hospitality from God. And what is with God is better for the righteous.
-
199
Among the People of the Book there are indeed some who believe in God, and in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down to them, humble before God, not trading the verses of God for a small price. Their reward awaits them with their Lord. God is swift in reckoning.
-
200
You who believe, be patient, outlast [your enemy] in patience, stay on guard, and be mindful of God, so that you may succeed.
