关于本章
Classed as a Meccan sura, it begins by urging people to follow the Book, then tells of Adam's creation, Iblis's arrogance and how Adam and his wife came to leave the Garden. Several passages address the 'children of Adam' about clothing, modesty and Satan's tricks. A scene follows in which the people of the Garden, the people of the Fire and the people standing on the heights between them call out to one another. The sura then recounts, in turn, Noah, Hud sent to 'Ad, Salih sent to Thamud, Lot and Shu'ayb in Midian, showing each people's rejection and its outcome. The longest part follows Moses: his contest with Pharaoh and the magicians, the crossing of the sea, his request to see God on the mountain, and the people's worship of the calf. It recalls the pledge God took from the children of Adam and closes by telling listeners to be silent when the Quran is recited.
- Adam and Iblis
- People of the heights
- Prophets and their peoples
- Moses and Pharaoh
- The pledge of Adam's children
章名由来 The name comes from verse 46, which describes people standing on the heights of the barrier between the Garden and the Fire, recognising each group by its marks.

1
Alif Lam Mim Sad.
-
2
[This is] a Book sent down to you—so let there be no unease in your heart because of it—so that you may warn by it, and as a reminder for the believers.
-
3
Follow what has been sent down to you from your Lord, and do not follow any protectors besides Him. How little you take heed!
-
4
How many a town We have destroyed! Our punishment came upon it by night, or while they were resting at midday.
-
5
And when Our punishment came upon them, their only cry was to say, “We were indeed wrongdoers.”
-
6
We will surely question those to whom [messengers] were sent, and We will surely question the messengers.
-
7
Then We will relate [everything] to them with knowledge, for We were never absent.
-
8
The weighing on that Day is the truth. Those whose scales are heavy—they are the successful.
-
9
And those whose scales are light—they are the ones who have lost their own selves, because they used to wrong Our signs.
-
10
We have established you on the earth and placed in it means of livelihood for you. How little thanks you give!
-
11
We created you, then We shaped you, then We said to the angels, “Prostrate yourselves before Adam,” and they prostrated, except Iblis; he was not among those who prostrated.
-
12
He said, “What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?” He said, “I am better than he. You created me from fire and created him from clay.”
-
13
He said, “Then go down from it! It is not for you to be arrogant in it. So get out; you are among the debased.”
-
14
He said, “Grant me respite until the Day they are raised up.”
-
15
He said, “You are among those granted respite.”
-
16
He said, “Because You have led me astray, I will surely lie in wait for them on Your straight path.
-
17
Then I will come at them from before them and from behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them grateful.”
-
18
He said, “Get out of it, disgraced and banished! Whoever of them follows you—I will surely fill Hell with all of you.”
-
19
“O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in the Garden, and eat from wherever you both wish, but do not approach this tree, or you will be among the wrongdoers.”
-
20
Then Satan whispered to them both, to expose to them what had been hidden from them of their nakedness, and he said, “Your Lord has forbidden you this tree only so that you would not become angels or become immortal.”
-
21
And he swore to them both, “I am truly a sincere adviser to you.”
-
22
So he lured them down by deception. When they tasted of the tree, their nakedness became apparent to them, and they began to cover themselves with leaves of the Garden. And their Lord called to them, “Did I not forbid you that tree, and tell you that Satan is a clear enemy to you?”
-
23
The two of them said, “Our Lord, we have done wrong to ourselves. Unless You forgive us and show us mercy, we shall certainly be among the lost.”
-
24
He said, “Go down, enemies to one another. On the earth you will have a dwelling place and provision for a time.”
-
25
He said, “There you will live, and there you will die, and from it you will be brought out.”
-
26
O children of Adam, We have sent down to you clothing to cover your nakedness, and as adornment. But the clothing of mindfulness of God—that is best. That is one of God’s signs, so that they may take heed.
-
27
O children of Adam, do not let Satan tempt you as he drove your parents out of the Garden, stripping them of their clothing to show them their nakedness. He and his tribe see you from where you do not see them. We have made the devils allies of those who do not believe.
-
28
When they commit an indecency, they say, “We found our fathers doing it, and God has commanded us to do it.” Say, “God does not command indecency. Do you say about God what you do not know?”
-
29
Say, “My Lord has commanded justice. Set your faces [toward Him] at every place of prostration, and call on Him, devoting your religion sincerely to Him. As He brought you into being at first, so you will return.”
-
30
A group He has guided, and a group has deserved to be left in error. They took the devils as allies instead of God, and they think they are rightly guided.
-
31
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every place of prostration, and eat and drink, but do not be wasteful. He does not love the wasteful.
-
32
Say, “Who has forbidden the adornment of God which He has brought forth for His servants, and the good things of provision?” Say, “They are for those who believe in the life of this world, [and] exclusively theirs on the Day of Resurrection.” Thus do We make the signs clear for a people who know.
-
33
Say, “My Lord has only forbidden indecencies, whether open or hidden, and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with God that for which He has sent down no authority, and that you say about God what you do not know.”
-
34
For every community there is a term. When their term comes, they cannot delay it by a single hour, nor can they bring it forward.
-
35
O children of Adam, whenever messengers from among you come to you, relating My signs to you—whoever is mindful of God and sets things right, there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve.
-
36
But those who deny Our signs and turn away from them in arrogance—they are the companions of the Fire; they will remain in it forever.
-
37
Who does greater wrong than one who invents a lie about God or denies His signs? Their share of what is written [for them] will reach them, until, when Our messengers come to take their souls, they will say, “Where are those you used to call on besides God?” They will say, “They have abandoned us,” and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers.
-
38
He will say, “Enter the Fire among the communities of jinn and humans who passed away before you.” Every time a community enters, it curses its sister [community], until, when they have all followed one another into it, the last of them will say of the first, “Our Lord, these led us astray, so give them a double punishment of the Fire.” He will say, “For each there is double, but you do not know.”
-
39
And the first of them will say to the last, “You had no advantage over us, so taste the punishment for what you used to earn.”
-
40
Those who deny Our signs and turn away from them in arrogance—the gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter the Garden until a camel passes through the eye of a needle. Thus do We repay the criminals.
-
41
They will have a bed of Hell, and over them coverings [of fire]. Thus do We repay the wrongdoers.
-
42
But those who believe and do righteous deeds—We do not burden any soul beyond its capacity—they are the companions of the Garden; they will remain in it forever.
-
43
And We will remove whatever rancor is in their hearts. Rivers will flow beneath them, and they will say, “Praise be to God, who guided us to this. We would never have been guided had God not guided us. The messengers of our Lord did come with the truth.” And it will be called out to them, “This is the Garden you have been given as an inheritance for what you used to do.”
-
44
The companions of the Garden will call out to the companions of the Fire, “We have found what our Lord promised us to be true. Have you found what your Lord promised to be true?” They will say, “Yes.” Then a herald will proclaim between them, “The curse of God is upon the wrongdoers,
-
45
who turn [people] away from the path of God and seek to make it crooked, and who disbelieve in the Hereafter.”
-
46
Between the two is a barrier, and on the heights are men who recognize each [group] by their marks. They will call out to the companions of the Garden, “Peace be upon you.” They have not [yet] entered it, though they long to.
-
47
And when their eyes are turned toward the companions of the Fire, they will say, “Our Lord, do not place us with the wrongdoing people.”
-
48
And the people of the heights will call out to men whom they recognize by their marks, saying, “Your amassing and your arrogance have been of no use to you.
-
49
Are these the ones about whom you swore that God would never grant them mercy?” [It will be said,] “Enter the Garden. There will be no fear for you, nor will you grieve.”
-
50
The companions of the Fire will call out to the companions of the Garden, “Pour some water on us, or some of what God has provided you.” They will say, “God has forbidden both to the disbelievers,
-
51
who took their religion as distraction and play, and whom the life of this world deceived.” So today We will forget them as they forgot the meeting of this Day of theirs, and as they used to reject Our signs.
-
52
We have brought them a Book which We have set out in detail with knowledge, as guidance and mercy for a people who believe.
-
53
Are they waiting for anything but its fulfillment? On the Day its fulfillment comes, those who had forgotten it before will say, “The messengers of our Lord did come with the truth. Do we have any intercessors to intercede for us? Or could we be sent back to do other than what we used to do?” They have lost their own selves, and what they used to invent has abandoned them.
-
54
Your Lord is God, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then established Himself on the Throne. He covers the day with the night, which pursues it swiftly; and the sun, the moon, and the stars are made subservient by His command. Truly, His are the creation and the command. Blessed is God, Lord of all the worlds.
-
55
Call on your Lord humbly and in secret. He does not love transgressors.
-
56
Do not spread corruption on the earth after it has been set right, and call on Him in fear and hope. The mercy of God is near to those who do good.
-
57
It is He who sends the winds as good news ahead of His mercy, until, when they carry heavy clouds, We drive them to a dead land and send down water there, and bring forth by it every kind of fruit. Thus will We bring forth the dead, so that you may take heed.
-
58
As for good land, its vegetation comes forth by the permission of its Lord; but from the bad [land] nothing comes forth except meagerly. Thus do We vary the signs for a people who are grateful.
-
59
We sent Noah to his people, and he said, “O my people, worship God; you have no god other than Him. I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous Day.”
-
60
The leaders of his people said, “We see you in clear error.”
-
61
He said, “O my people, there is no error in me; rather, I am a messenger from the Lord of all the worlds.
-
62
I deliver my Lord's messages to you and counsel you sincerely, and God has taught me things you do not know.
-
63
Do you wonder that a reminder has come to you from your Lord through a man from among you, to warn you, so that you may be mindful of God and so that you may receive mercy?”
-
64
But they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship, and We drowned those who denied Our signs. They were indeed a blind people.
-
65
And to Ad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, “O my people, worship God; you have no god other than Him. Will you not be mindful of Him?”
-
66
The disbelieving leaders of his people said, “We see you in foolishness, and we think you are one of the liars.”
-
67
He said, “O my people, there is no foolishness in me; rather, I am a messenger from the Lord of all the worlds.
-
68
I convey to you the messages of my Lord, and I am a trustworthy adviser to you.
-
69
Do you wonder that a reminder has come to you from your Lord through a man from among you, to warn you? Remember when He made you successors after the people of Noah and increased you greatly in stature. So remember the favors of God, so that you may succeed.”
-
70
They said, “Have you come to us so that we would worship God alone and abandon what our fathers used to worship? Then bring us what you threaten us with, if you are truthful.”
-
71
He said, “Defilement and wrath from your Lord have already fallen upon you. Do you dispute with me about names which you and your fathers have coined, for which God has sent down no authority? Then wait; I too am waiting with you.”
-
72
So We saved him and those with him by mercy from Us, and We cut off the last remnant of those who denied Our signs; they were not believers.
-
73
And to Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih. He said, “O my people, worship God; you have no god other than Him. A clear proof has come to you from your Lord. This is the she-camel of God, a sign for you. So leave her to graze on God’s earth, and do not touch her with harm, or a painful punishment will seize you.
-
74
And remember when He made you successors after Ad and settled you in the land: you build palaces on its plains and carve homes out of the mountains. So remember the favors of God, and do not go about the earth spreading corruption.”
-
75
The arrogant leaders of his people said to those who were held to be weak—to those of them who believed—“Do you know that Salih is sent by his Lord?” They said, “We believe in what he has been sent with.”
-
76
Those who were arrogant said, “We reject what you believe in.”
-
77
Then they hamstrung the she-camel and defied the command of their Lord, and said, “O Salih, bring us what you threaten us with, if you are one of the messengers.”
-
78
So the earthquake seized them, and morning found them lying lifeless in their homes.
-
79
Then he turned away from them and said, “O my people, I conveyed to you the message of my Lord and gave you sincere advice, but you do not love sincere advisers.”
-
80
And [We sent] Lot, when he said to his people, “Do you commit an indecency such as no one in all the worlds has done before you?
-
81
You approach men with desire instead of women. No, you are a people who exceed all bounds.”
-
82
His people’s only answer was to say, “Drive them out of your town! They are people who want to keep themselves pure.”
-
83
Then We rescued him and his household, all but his wife, who was one of those left behind.
-
84
And We rained down upon them a rain [of stones]. So see what was the end of the criminals.
-
85
And to Midian [We sent] their brother Shuayb. He said, “O my people, worship God; you have no god other than Him. A clear proof has come to you from your Lord. So give full measure and weight, do not cheat people of their goods, and do not spread corruption on the earth after it has been set right. That is better for you, if you are believers.
-
86
And do not lie in wait on every road, threatening and turning away from the path of God those who believe in Him, and seeking to make it crooked. Remember when you were few and He multiplied you, and see what was the end of those who spread corruption.
-
87
If a group of you believes in what I have been sent with and another group does not believe, then be patient until God judges between us. He is the best of judges.”
-
88
The arrogant leaders of his people said, “O Shuayb, we will surely drive you and those who believe with you out of our town, unless you return to our creed.” He said, “Even if we detest it?
-
89
We would be inventing a lie about God if we returned to your creed after God has saved us from it. It is not for us to return to it unless God, our Lord, should will. Our Lord encompasses all things in knowledge. In God we have put our trust. Our Lord, decide between us and our people in truth, for You are the best of those who decide.”
-
90
The disbelieving leaders of his people said, “If you follow Shuayb, you will then surely be losers.”
-
91
So the earthquake seized them, and morning found them lying lifeless in their homes.
-
92
Those who denied Shuayb—it was as if they had never lived there. Those who denied Shuayb—it was they who were the losers.
-
93
Then he left them, saying, “My people, I delivered my Lord's messages to you and counselled you sincerely. Why should I mourn for people who refuse to believe?”
-
94
We never sent a prophet to any town without seizing its people with hardship and adversity, so that they might humble themselves.
-
95
Then We exchanged the bad [condition] for good, until they multiplied and said, “Adversity and ease touched our fathers as well.” Then We seized them suddenly, while they did not perceive it.
-
96
Had the people of the towns believed and been mindful of God, We would have opened to them blessings from the heaven and the earth. But they denied, so We seized them for what they used to earn.
-
97
Do the people of the towns feel secure that Our punishment will not come upon them by night while they are asleep?
-
98
Or do the people of the towns feel secure that Our punishment will not come upon them in the forenoon while they are at play?
-
99
Do they feel secure from the plan of God? No one feels secure from the plan of God except the people who are losers.
-
100
Is it not a lesson for those who inherit the earth after its [former] people that, if We willed, We could strike them for their sins? And We seal their hearts, so they do not hear.
-
101
Those towns—We relate to you some of their stories. Their messengers came to them with clear proofs, but they would not believe in what they had denied before. Thus does God seal the hearts of the disbelievers.
-
102
We did not find most of them true to any covenant; indeed, We found most of them defiantly disobedient.
-
103
Then, after them, We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his leaders, but they treated them unjustly. So see what was the end of those who spread corruption.
-
104
And Moses said, “O Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of all the worlds,
-
105
bound to say nothing about God except the truth. I have come to you with a clear proof from your Lord, so let the Children of Israel go with me.”
-
106
He said, “If you have come with a sign, then produce it, if you are truthful.”
-
107
So he threw down his staff, and at once it was a serpent, plain to see.
-
108
And he drew out his hand, and at once it was white for the onlookers.
-
109
The leaders of Pharaoh’s people said, “This is surely a skilled sorcerer
-
110
who wants to drive you out of your land. So what do you advise?”
-
111
They said, “Hold him and his brother back for a time, and dispatch summoners into the cities
-
112
to bring you every skilled sorcerer.”
-
113
The sorcerers came to Pharaoh and said, “We will surely have a reward if we are the victors.”
-
114
He said, “Yes, and you will surely be among those brought near [to me].”
-
115
They said, “O Moses, either you throw, or we will be the ones to throw.”
-
116
He said, “Throw.” When they threw, they bewitched the people’s eyes and struck terror into them, and they produced a mighty sorcery.
-
117
And We inspired Moses, “Throw your staff,” and at once it swallowed up what they had faked.
-
118
So the truth was established, and what they had been doing was proven false.
-
119
They were defeated there and turned back humiliated.
-
120
And the sorcerers fell down in prostration.
-
121
They declared, “We have come to believe in the Lord of all the worlds,
-
122
the Lord of Moses and Aaron.”
-
123
Pharaoh said, “You believed in him before I gave you permission? This is surely a plot you have plotted in the city to drive its people out of it. But you will come to know.
-
124
I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then I will surely crucify you all.”
-
125
They said, “Indeed, to our Lord we will return.
-
126
You take revenge on us only because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour patience upon us, and let us die as Muslims.”
-
127
The leaders of Pharaoh’s people said, “Will you leave Moses and his people to spread corruption in the land and to abandon you and your gods?” He said, “We will kill their sons and spare their women, and we hold full power over them.”
-
128
Moses said to his people, “Seek help from God and be patient. The earth belongs to God; He gives it as inheritance to whom He wills of His servants, and the [good] end is for the God-fearing.”
-
129
They said, “We were persecuted before you came to us and after you came to us.” He said, “It may be that your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors in the land, and then see how you act.”
-
130
We seized the people of Pharaoh with years [of drought] and shortage of crops, so that they might take heed.
-
131
But when good came to them, they said, “This is ours [by right].” And if some ill befell them, they blamed it as an ill omen on Moses and those with him. Truly, their omen is with God, but most of them do not know.
-
132
And they said, “Whatever sign you bring us to bewitch us with, we will not believe in you.”
-
133
So We sent upon them the flood, the locusts, the lice, the frogs, and the blood—distinct signs—but they were arrogant and were a criminal people.
-
134
Whenever the plague fell upon them, they said, “O Moses, call on your Lord for us by the covenant He has made with you. If you remove the plague from us, we will surely believe in you and send the Children of Israel with you.”
-
135
But whenever We removed the plague from them until a term they were to reach, at once they broke their word.
-
136
So We took retribution from them and drowned them in the sea, because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them.
-
137
And We gave the people who had been oppressed as weak the eastern and western parts of the land, which We had blessed, as an inheritance. The good word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because they were patient, and We destroyed what Pharaoh and his people had been making and what they had been building.
-
138
We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came upon a people devoted to idols of their own. They said, “O Moses, make for us a god just as they have gods.” He said, “You are truly an ignorant people.
-
139
What these people are engaged in will be destroyed, and what they have been doing is worthless.”
-
140
He said, “Should I seek for you a god other than God, when He has favored you above all the worlds?”
-
141
And [remember] when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who were inflicting a terrible torment on you, killing your sons and sparing your women. In that was a great trial from your Lord.
-
142
We appointed for Moses thirty nights and completed them with ten [more], so the term of his Lord was completed as forty nights. And Moses said to his brother Aaron, “Take my place among my people, set things right, and do not follow the way of those who spread corruption.”
-
143
When Moses came at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, “My Lord, show [Yourself] to me, that I may look at You.” He said, “You will not see Me, but look at the mountain; if it stays firm in its place, then you will see Me.” But when his Lord revealed His glory to the mountain, He leveled it to dust, and Moses fell down unconscious. When he came to, he said, “Glory be to You! I turn to You in repentance, and I am the first of the believers.”
-
144
He said, “O Moses, I have chosen you above the people with My messages and My speaking [to you]. So take what I have given you and be among the grateful.”
-
145
And We wrote for him on the tablets something of every matter—an admonition and a detailed explanation of all things. “So hold to them firmly, and command your people to take the best of them. I will show you the home of the defiantly disobedient.”
-
146
I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant on the earth without right. Even if they see every sign, they will not believe in it; if they see the way of right guidance, they will not take it as a way; but if they see the way of error, they will take it as a way. That is because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them.
-
147
Those who deny Our signs and the meeting of the Hereafter—their deeds have come to nothing. Will they be repaid except for what they used to do?
-
148
And in his absence the people of Moses took, from their ornaments, a calf—a body that made a lowing sound. Did they not see that it could not speak to them or guide them to any way? They took it [for worship], and they were wrongdoers.
-
149
When they were filled with remorse and saw that they had gone astray, they said, “If our Lord does not have mercy on us and forgive us, we will surely be among the losers.”
-
150
When Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved, he said, “How evil is what you have done in my place after me! Did you hasten the command of your Lord?” He threw down the tablets and seized his brother by the head, dragging him toward himself. [Aaron] said, “Son of my mother, the people overpowered me and nearly killed me. So do not let the enemies rejoice over me, and do not count me among the wrongdoing people.”
-
151
[Moses] said, “My Lord, forgive me and my brother, and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”
-
152
Those who took the calf [for worship]—wrath from their Lord and humiliation in the life of this world will overtake them. Thus do We repay those who invent falsehood.
-
153
But those who did evil deeds, then repented after them and believed—your Lord, after that, is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
154
When the anger of Moses subsided, he took up the tablets; in their inscription was guidance and mercy for those who stand in awe of their Lord.
-
155
And Moses chose seventy men from his people for Our appointment. When the earthquake seized them, he said, “My Lord, had You willed, You could have destroyed them long before, and me as well. Will You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? This is nothing but Your trial, by which You let go astray whom You will and guide whom You will. You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy on us, for You are the best of those who forgive.
-
156
And ordain for us good in this world and in the Hereafter. We have turned to You.” He said, “My punishment—I strike with it whom I will, but My mercy encompasses all things. I will ordain it for those who are mindful of Me and give the alms (zakat), and those who believe in Our signs—
-
157
those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find written about in what they have, in the Torah and the Gospel. He commands them to what is right and forbids them what is wrong, makes lawful for them the good things and forbids them the foul, and relieves them of their burden and the shackles that were upon them. So those who believe in him, honor him, support him, and follow the light that has been sent down with him—they are the successful.”
-
158
Say, “O people, I am the Messenger of God to you all, [from Him] to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no god but Him; He gives life and causes death. So believe in God and His Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, who believes in God and His words, and follow him, so that you may be rightly guided.”
-
159
Among the people of Moses is a community that guides by the truth and by it establishes justice.
-
160
We divided them into twelve tribes, as communities. And We inspired Moses, when his people asked him for water, “Strike the rock with your staff,” and twelve springs gushed forth from it; each people knew its drinking place. We shaded them with clouds and sent down to them manna and quails: “Eat of the good things We have provided you.” They did not wrong Us, but they used to wrong themselves.
-
161
And [remember] when it was said to them, “Dwell in this town and eat from it wherever you wish, and say, ‘Relieve us [of our sins],’ and enter the gate bowing down; We will forgive you your faults. We will give more to those who do good.”
-
162
But the wrongdoers among them substituted a word other than what they had been told, so We sent upon them a plague from the sky for the wrong they used to do.
-
163
Ask them about the town that stood by the sea, when they broke the Sabbath: when their fish came to them on their Sabbath day, appearing on the surface, but on the days they did not keep the Sabbath, they did not come to them. Thus did We test them because they used to disobey.
-
164
And when a community among them said, “Why do you admonish a people whom God is going to destroy or punish with a severe punishment?” they said, “To be free of blame before your Lord, and that perhaps they may become mindful of God.”
-
165
So when they forgot what they had been reminded of, We saved those who forbade evil, and We seized those who did wrong with a dreadful punishment because they used to disobey.
-
166
When they defied what they had been prohibited from, We told them, “Become apes, scorned and rejected.”
-
167
And [remember] when your Lord declared that He would surely send against them, until the Day of Resurrection, those who would inflict a terrible torment on them. Your Lord is swift in retribution, and He is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
168
We scattered them on the earth as communities: among them are the righteous, and among them are those below that. We tested them with good things and bad, so that they might return.
-
169
Then after them came successors who inherited the Book, taking the fleeting goods of this lower world and saying, “We will be forgiven.” And if similar goods came to them, they would take them [again]. Was not the covenant of the Book taken from them, that they would say nothing about God except the truth? And they have studied what is in it. The home of the Hereafter is better for those who are mindful of God. Will you not use reason?
-
170
As for those who hold fast to the Book and keep up the prayer—We do not let the reward of those who set things right go to waste.
-
171
And [remember] when We raised the mountain above them as if it were a canopy, and they thought it would fall on them: “Take what We have given you firmly, and remember what is in it, so that you may be mindful of God.”
-
172
And [remember] when your Lord took from the children of Adam—from their loins—their descendants, and made them bear witness about themselves: “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes, we bear witness.” [This was] so that you would not say on the Day of Resurrection, “We were unaware of this,”
-
173
or say, “It was only our fathers who associated partners [with God] before us, and we were descendants after them. Will You destroy us for what the falsifiers did?”
-
174
Thus do We make the signs clear, so that they may return.
-
175
And recite to them the story of the one to whom We gave Our signs, but he cast them off, so Satan pursued him, and he became one of those led astray.
-
176
Had We willed, We could have raised him by them, but he clung to the earth and followed his own desire. His likeness is that of a dog: if you drive it away, it pants, and if you leave it alone, it pants. That is the likeness of the people who deny Our signs. So relate the stories, so that they may reflect.
-
177
How wretched an example are those who reject Our signs! It was themselves they used to wrong.
-
178
Whoever God guides is rightly guided, and whoever He leaves astray—they are the losers.
-
179
We have created for Hell many of the jinn and humans. They have hearts with which they do not understand, eyes with which they do not see, and ears with which they do not hear. They are like cattle—no, even more astray. They are the heedless.
-
180
To God belong the most beautiful names, so call on Him by them, and leave those who distort His names. They will be repaid for what they used to do.
-
181
Among those We have created is a community that guides by the truth and by it establishes justice.
-
182
Those who deny Our signs—We will lead them on step by step from where they do not know.
-
183
And I give them respite; My plan is firm.
-
184
Have they not reflected? There is no madness in their companion; he is only a clear warner.
-
185
Have they not looked into the realm of the heavens and the earth and whatever things God has created, and [considered] that their term may have drawn near? In what message after this will they believe?
-
186
Whoever God leaves astray has no one to guide him, and He leaves them wandering blindly in their transgression.
-
187
They ask you about the Hour: “When will it arrive?” Say, “Its knowledge is only with my Lord. None but He will reveal it at its time. It weighs heavily on the heavens and the earth. It will come upon you only suddenly.” They ask you as if you were well informed about it. Say, “Its knowledge is only with God, but most people do not know.”
-
188
Say, “I have no power to benefit or harm myself, except as God wills. Had I known the unseen, I would have gained much good, and no harm would have touched me. I am only a warner and a bearer of good news to a people who believe.”
-
189
It is He who created you from a single soul and made from it its mate, so that he might find rest with her. When he covered her, she bore a light burden and went about with it. When it grew heavy, they both called on God, their Lord, “If You give us a sound [child], we will surely be among the grateful.”
-
190
But when He gave them a sound [child], they ascribed to Him partners in what He had given them. Exalted is God above what they associate [with Him].
-
191
Do they set up as partners [with Him] things that cannot create anything, and that are created themselves,
-
192
that can neither help them nor help themselves?
-
193
If you call them to guidance, they will not follow you. It is the same for you whether you call them or remain silent.
-
194
Those you call on besides God are servants like you. So call on them and let them answer you, if you are truthful.
-
195
Do they have feet to walk with? Or hands to strike with? Or eyes to see with? Or ears to hear with? Say, “Call your partners, then plot against me and give me no respite.
-
196
My Protector is God, who sent down the Book, and He takes care of the righteous.
-
197
Those you call on besides Him can neither help you nor help themselves.”
-
198
If you call them to guidance, they do not hear. You see them looking at you, but they do not see.
-
199
Accept what is easily given, command what is right, and turn away from the ignorant.
-
200
If a prompting from Satan should stir you, seek refuge in God. He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
-
201
Those who are mindful of God—when a visitation from Satan touches them, they remember [God], and at once they see clearly.
-
202
But their brothers [the devils] draw them further into error, and then they do not stop short.
-
203
When you do not bring them a sign, they say, “Why have you not made one up?” Say, “I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. These are insights from your Lord, and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.”
-
204
When the Quran is recited, listen to it and be silent, so that you may receive mercy.
-
205
And remember your Lord within yourself, humbly and with awe, and without raising your voice, in the mornings and the evenings, and do not be among the heedless.
-
206
Those who are near your Lord are not too proud to worship Him; they glorify Him, and to Him they prostrate.
