الرَّحْمَٰنِ르r라흐마니 بِسْمِ비스밀
- Bold = the stressed syllable of the word; a little stronger.
- Overline = long vowel (madd): hold it about two beats. Length matters most in recitation.
- Tiny = no vowel in the Arabic here — just the consonant, short.
- Small Latin letter = a sound Korean lacks, on the next syllable: f upper teeth on lower lip · θ/ð tongue tip between the teeth · r rolled tongue tip (a bare ㄹ is l).

- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.
- Whole word faint (the, of, and, to…) = light and quick in a sentence; stress the content words.
- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
Classed as a Meccan sura, it opens with praise of God who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light, and then answers, one by one, the demands and excuses of those who deny the signs. It says that the keys of the unseen are with God alone, and that not a leaf falls without His knowledge. Abraham is shown looking at a star, the moon and the sun, and concluding that nothing that sets can be his Lord; a long line of prophets after him is then named. Signs in nature, from the splitting of the seed to the stars that guide travellers, are listed. The sura criticises the idolaters' custom of setting aside livestock and crops for their partner-gods and inventing food taboos, and sets out what God has truly forbidden. It ends with the declaration that one's prayer, sacrifice, life and death all belong to God.
- The oneness of God
- Signs in creation
- Abraham's reasoning
- Livestock customs
- What God truly forbade
The name The name comes from the section on livestock (verses 136–144), which criticises idolaters for dividing cattle and crops between God and their idols and inventing taboos about them.
-
1
All praise is God's, who brought the heavens and the earth into being and appointed darkness and light. Even so, the disbelievers treat others as equal to their Lord.
-
2
It is He who created you from clay, then decreed a term [for your life], and there is another term appointed with Him. Yet you still doubt.
-
3
He is God in the heavens and on the earth. He knows what you conceal and what you reveal, and He knows what you earn.
-
4
Yet no sign comes to them from among the signs of their Lord but they turn away from it.
-
5
They denied the truth when it came to them, but news will come to them of what they used to mock.
-
6
Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them? We had established them on earth as We have not established you, and We sent the sky down on them in abundant rain and made rivers flow beneath them. Then We destroyed them for their sins and raised up after them another generation.
-
7
Even if We had sent down to you a writing on parchment and they had touched it with their own hands, those who disbelieve would have said, ‘This is nothing but plain magic.’
-
8
They say, ‘Why has an angel not been sent down to him?’ Had We sent down an angel, the matter would have been settled, and then they would have been given no respite.
-
9
Had We made him an angel, We would have made him [appear as] a man, and We would have confused them in what they are already confusing [themselves about].
-
10
Messengers before you were mocked, but those who scoffed at them were overwhelmed by what they used to mock.
-
11
Say, ‘Travel through the land and see what was the end of those who denied [the truth].’
-
12
Say, ‘To whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth?’ Say, ‘To God.’ He has prescribed mercy for Himself. He will surely gather you on the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Those who have lost their own souls, they will not believe.
-
13
To Him belongs whatever dwells in the night and the day. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
-
14
Say, ‘Shall I take as protector anyone other than God, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, who feeds and is not fed?’ Say, ‘I have been commanded to be the first of those who submit [to God], and [told], “Do not be one of the idolaters.”’
-
15
Say, ‘Were I to disobey my Lord, I would dread the torment of a mighty Day.’
-
16
Whoever is spared from it on that Day, He has had mercy on him. That is the clear triumph.
-
17
If God touches you with harm, none can remove it but He; and if He touches you with good, He has power over all things.
-
18
He is the Supreme over His servants. He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware.
-
19
Say, ‘What thing is greatest in testimony?’ Say, ‘God is witness between me and you. This Quran has been revealed to me so that by it I may warn you and whomever it reaches. Do you really bear witness that there are other gods besides God?’ Say, ‘I do not bear witness [to that].’ Say, ‘He is only one God, and I am free of what you associate [with Him].’
-
20
Those to whom We have given the Book recognise him as they recognise their own sons. Those who have lost their own souls, they will not believe.
-
21
Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about God or denies His signs? The wrongdoers will not succeed.
-
22
On the Day We gather them all together, We will say to those who associated partners [with God], ‘Where are your partners whom you used to claim?’
-
23
Then they will have no answer except to say, ‘By God, our Lord, we never associated partners [with Him].’
-
24
See how they lie against themselves, and how what they used to invent has forsaken them.
-
25
Among them are some who listen to you, but We have placed coverings over their hearts so that they do not understand it, and deafness in their ears. Even if they see every sign, they will not believe in it. So much so that when they come to you to argue with you, those who disbelieve say, ‘This is nothing but the tales of the ancients.’
-
26
They forbid [others] from it and keep away from it themselves, but they destroy none but themselves, though they do not perceive it.
-
27
If you could only see when they are made to stand before the Fire! They will say, ‘If only we could be sent back! Then we would not deny the signs of our Lord, and we would be among the believers.’
-
28
No, what they used to hide before has now become plain to them. Even if they were sent back, they would return to what they were forbidden. They are liars indeed.
-
29
They say, ‘There is nothing but our life in this world, and we will not be raised again.’
-
30
If you could only see when they are made to stand before their Lord! He will say, ‘Is this not the truth?’ They will say, ‘Yes indeed, by our Lord.’ He will say, ‘Then taste the punishment for your disbelief.’
-
31
Those who deny the meeting with God have certainly lost, until, when the Hour comes upon them suddenly, they say, ‘Alas for us, for what we neglected in it!’ while they carry their burdens on their backs. How evil is the burden they bear!
-
32
The life of this world is nothing but play and amusement, and the home of the Hereafter is better for those who are mindful of God. Will you not use reason?
-
33
We know well that what they say grieves you. Yet it is not you they deny; rather, it is God's signs that the wrongdoers reject.
-
34
Messengers before you were denied, but they patiently endured the denial and the harm until Our help came to them. None can alter the words of God, and some of the news of the messengers has already come to you.
-
35
If their turning away weighs heavily on you, then, if you can seek a tunnel into the earth or a ladder into the sky to bring them a sign, [do so]. Had God willed, He would have gathered them all to guidance. So do not be one of the ignorant.
-
36
Only those who listen will respond. As for the dead, God will raise them, and then to Him they will be returned.
-
37
They say, ‘Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Lord?’ Say, ‘God is able to send down a sign,’ but most of them do not know.
-
38
There is no creature on the earth, nor bird that flies with its wings, but they are communities like you. We have neglected nothing in the Record. Then to their Lord they will be gathered.
-
39
Those who deny Our signs are deaf and dumb, in darkness. God lets go astray whom He wills, and places whom He wills on a straight path.
-
40
Say, ‘Tell me, if God's punishment came upon you, or the Hour came upon you, would you call on anyone other than God, if you are truthful?
-
41
No, it is Him alone you would call on, and He would remove what you called on Him for, if He willed, and you would forget what you associate [with Him].’
-
42
We sent [messengers] to communities before you, and We seized them with hardship and suffering so that they might humble themselves.
-
43
If only they had humbled themselves when Our punishment came upon them! But their hearts hardened, and Satan made what they used to do seem fair to them.
-
44
So when they forgot what they had been reminded of, We opened for them the gates of all things, until, while they were rejoicing in what they had been given, We seized them suddenly, and they were struck with despair.
-
45
So the last remnant of the people who did wrong was cut off. Praise be to God, Lord of all the worlds.
-
46
Say, ‘Tell me, if God took away your hearing and your sight and sealed your hearts, what god other than God could bring them back to you?’ See how We vary the signs, yet they still turn away.
-
47
Say, ‘Tell me, if God's punishment came upon you suddenly or openly, would any be destroyed except the wrongdoing people?’
-
48
We send the messengers only as bearers of good tidings and as warners. So whoever believes and mends his ways, no fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
-
49
But those who deny Our signs, the punishment will touch them because of their defiant disobedience.
-
50
Say, ‘I do not tell you that I have the treasuries of God, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I follow only what is revealed to me.’ Say, ‘Are the blind and the seeing equal? Will you not reflect?’
-
51
Warn with it those who fear that they will be gathered to their Lord, having no protector or intercessor besides Him, so that they may be mindful of God.
-
52
Do not drive away those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His face. You are not accountable for them in anything, nor are they accountable for you in anything, that you should drive them away and so become one of the wrongdoers.
-
53
Thus We have tested some of them by means of others, so that they say, ‘Are these the ones among us whom God has favoured?’ Does God not know best those who are grateful?
-
54
When those who believe in Our signs come to you, say, ‘Peace be upon you. Your Lord has prescribed mercy for Himself: whoever of you does evil out of ignorance, then repents afterwards and mends his ways, He is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.’
-
55
Thus We explain the signs in detail, so that the way of the wicked may become clear.
-
56
Say, ‘I have been forbidden to worship those you call on besides God.’ Say, ‘I will not follow your desires, for then I would have gone astray and would not be among the rightly guided.’
-
57
Say, ‘I stand on clear proof from my Lord, yet you deny it. I do not have what you are seeking to hasten. Judgement belongs to God alone. He declares the truth, and He is the best of judges.’
-
58
Say, ‘If I had what you are seeking to hasten, the matter between me and you would have been settled. God knows best the wrongdoers.’
-
59
With Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them but He. He knows what is on land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but He knows it, nor is there a grain in the darkness of the earth, nor anything fresh or dry, but it is [recorded] in a clear Record.
-
60
It is He who takes your souls by night and knows what you have done by day. Then He raises you up again in it, so that an appointed term may be fulfilled. Then to Him is your return, and He will inform you of what you used to do.
-
61
He is the Supreme over His servants, and He sends guardians over you, until, when death comes to one of you, Our messengers take his soul, and they do not fail [in their duty].
-
62
Then they are returned to God, their true Master. Truly, judgement is His, and He is the swiftest of reckoners.
-
63
Say, ‘Who rescues you from the darkness of the land and the sea, when you call on Him humbly and in secret, [saying], “If He rescues us from this, we will surely be among the grateful”?’
-
64
Say, ‘God rescues you from it and from every distress, yet you still associate partners [with Him].’
-
65
Say, ‘He is able to send upon you a punishment from above you or from beneath your feet, or to confound you into factions and make some of you taste the violence of others.’ See how We vary the signs, so that they may understand.
-
66
Your people have denied it, though it is the truth. Say, ‘I am not a guardian over you.’
-
67
For every tiding there is an appointed time, and you will come to know.
-
68
When you see those who engage in [mocking] talk about Our signs, turn away from them until they engage in some other talk. And if Satan makes you forget, then after you remember, do not sit with the wrongdoing people.
-
69
Those who are mindful of God are not accountable for them in anything, but [their duty is] to remind them, so that they may be mindful of God.
-
70
Leave those who take their religion as play and amusement, and whom the life of this world has deceived. But remind [them] by it, lest a soul be given up to destruction for what it has earned, having no protector or intercessor besides God. Even if it offered every ransom, none would be accepted from it. Those are the ones who are given up to destruction for what they have earned. For them there will be a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment, because they used to disbelieve.
-
71
Say, ‘Shall we call on, besides God, what can neither benefit us nor harm us, and be turned back on our heels after God has guided us, like one whom the devils have lured away, bewildered in the land, while he has companions calling him to guidance, [saying], “Come to us”?’ Say, ‘God's guidance is the [true] guidance, and we have been commanded to submit to the Lord of all the worlds,
-
72
and to establish the prayer and be mindful of Him. It is He to whom you will be gathered.’
-
73
It is He who created the heavens and the earth in truth. On the Day He says, ‘Be,’ it is. His word is the truth. His is the dominion on the Day the Trumpet is blown. He is the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware.
-
74
[Remember] when Abraham said to his father Azar, ‘Do you take idols as gods? I see you and your people in manifest error.’
-
75
Thus We showed Abraham the dominion of the heavens and the earth, so that he would be among those who are certain.
-
76
When the night covered him, he saw a star. He said, ‘This is my Lord.’ But when it set, he said, ‘I do not love things that set.’
-
77
When he saw the moon rising, he said, ‘This is my Lord.’ But when it set, he said, ‘If my Lord does not guide me, I will surely be among the people who go astray.’
-
78
When he saw the sun rising, he said, ‘This is my Lord; this is greater.’ But when it set, he said, ‘My people, I am free of what you associate [with God].
-
79
I have turned my face towards Him who originated the heavens and the earth, upright in faith, and I am not one of the idolaters.’
-
80
His people argued with him. He said, ‘Do you argue with me about God, when He has guided me? I do not fear what you associate with Him, unless my Lord wills something. My Lord encompasses all things in knowledge. Will you not take heed?
-
81
How should I fear what you associate [with Him], when you do not fear associating with God that for which He has sent down to you no authority? Which of the two parties then has more right to security, if you know?’
-
82
Those who believe and do not mix their faith with wrongdoing, it is they who will have security, and they are rightly guided.
-
83
That was Our argument, which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise in degrees whom We will. Your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
-
84
We granted him Isaac and Jacob, and each of them We guided. Noah We guided before, and among his descendants were David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses and Aaron. Thus do We reward those who do good.
-
85
And Zechariah, John, Jesus and Elijah; each was among the righteous.
-
86
And Ishmael, Elisha, Jonah and Lot; each We favoured above all the worlds.
-
87
And some of their forefathers, their descendants and their brothers; We chose them and guided them to a straight path.
-
88
That is God's guidance, by which He guides whom He wills of His servants. Had they associated partners [with Him], all that they used to do would have come to nothing for them.
-
89
They are those to whom We gave the Book, judgement and prophethood. If these [people] deny it, We have already entrusted it to a people who do not deny it.
-
90
They are those whom God has guided, so follow their guidance. Say, ‘I ask of you no reward for it. It is nothing but a reminder for all the worlds.’
-
91
They did not appraise God with the appraisal due to Him when they said, ‘God has not sent down anything to any human being.’ Say, ‘Who sent down the Book that Moses brought as a light and guidance for people? You put it into sheets of parchment, revealing some and concealing much. And you were taught what neither you nor your forefathers knew.’ Say, ‘God [sent it down].’ Then leave them to play in their idle talk.
-
92
This is a blessed Book which We have sent down, confirming what came before it, so that you may warn the Mother of Towns and those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they are watchful over their prayers.
-
93
Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about God, or says, ‘It has been revealed to me,’ when nothing has been revealed to him, or one who says, ‘I will send down the like of what God has sent down’? If you could only see when the wrongdoers are in the throes of death, while the angels stretch out their hands, [saying], ‘Give up your souls! Today you will be repaid with the punishment of humiliation for what you used to say about God other than the truth, and for being arrogant towards His signs.’
-
94
[God will say], ‘Now you have come to Us alone, as We created you the first time, and you have left behind you all that We bestowed on you. We do not see with you your intercessors whom you claimed were partners [with God] in you. The bond between you has been cut, and what you used to claim has forsaken you.’
-
95
It is God who splits the grain and the date-stone. He brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living. That is God; so how are you turned away?
-
96
He splits [the darkness into] daybreak, and has made the night for rest, and the sun and the moon for reckoning. That is the ordaining of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.
-
97
It is He who has made the stars for you, so that you may be guided by them in the darkness of land and sea. We have explained the signs in detail for a people who know.
-
98
It is He who produced you from a single soul, then [gave you] a place of dwelling and a place of keeping. We have explained the signs in detail for a people who understand.
-
99
It is He who sends down water from the sky, and with it We bring forth every kind of growth. From it We bring forth green shoots, from which We bring forth grain piled up in clusters; and from the palm tree, from its spathes, clusters of dates hanging low; and gardens of grapes, olives and pomegranates, alike and unlike. Look at its fruit when it bears fruit, and at its ripening. In that are signs for a people who believe.
-
100
Yet they make the jinn partners with God, though He created them, and they falsely ascribe to Him sons and daughters without knowledge. Glory be to Him, exalted far above what they describe!
-
101
He is the One who brought the heavens and the earth into existence. How could He have a child, having no wife? He created everything, and He knows everything fully.
-
102
That is God, your Lord. There is no god but He, the Creator of all things, so worship Him. He is Guardian over all things.
-
103
Vision cannot grasp Him, but He grasps all vision. He is the Most Subtle, the All-Aware.
-
104
Clear insights have come to you from your Lord. Whoever sees, it is for his own good; and whoever is blind, it is to his own harm. I am not a keeper over you.
-
105
Thus We vary the signs, so that they will say, ‘You have studied [this],’ and so that We may make it clear to a people who know.
-
106
Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord; there is no god but He. And turn away from the idolaters.
-
107
Had God willed, they would not have associated partners [with Him]. We have not made you a keeper over them, nor are you their guardian.
-
108
Do not insult those whom they call on besides God, lest they insult God in hostility, without knowledge. Thus We have made the deeds of every community seem fair to them. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them of what they used to do.
-
109
They swear by God their most solemn oaths that if a sign came to them, they would surely believe in it. Say, ‘Signs are only with God.’ And what will make you realise that even if it came, they would not believe?
-
110
We will turn their hearts and their eyes away, just as they did not believe in it the first time, and We will leave them wandering blindly in their transgression.
-
111
Had We sent the angels down to them, and had the dead spoken with them, and had We assembled everything in front of them, they still would not have believed, unless God so willed. Yet most of them act in ignorance.
-
112
Thus We have made for every prophet an enemy: devils from among mankind and the jinn, who inspire one another with alluring speech by way of deception. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. So leave them and what they invent,
-
113
so that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline to it, and be pleased with it, and commit what they are committing.
-
114
[Say], ‘Shall I seek a judge other than God, when it is He who has sent down to you the Book explained in detail?’ Those to whom We have given the Book know that it has been sent down from your Lord with the truth. So do not be one of those who doubt.
-
115
The word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and justice. None can alter His words. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
-
116
If you obey most of those on earth, they will lead you astray from the way of God. They follow nothing but conjecture, and they only guess.
-
117
Truly your Lord knows better than anyone who strays from His path, and He knows better than anyone who is guided aright.
-
118
So eat of that over which the name of God has been mentioned, if you believe in His signs.
-
119
Why should you not eat of that over which the name of God has been mentioned, when He has explained to you in detail what He has forbidden you, except what you are compelled to? Many lead [others] astray by their desires without knowledge. Your Lord knows best the transgressors.
-
120
Abandon sin, open and secret. Those who earn sin will be repaid for what they used to commit.
-
121
Do not eat of that over which the name of God has not been mentioned; that is defiance [of God]. The devils inspire their allies to dispute with you. If you obey them, you would indeed be idolaters.
-
122
Is one who was dead, and We gave him life and made for him a light by which he walks among people, like one who is in darkness from which he can never come out? Thus what the disbelievers used to do has been made to seem fair to them.
-
123
Thus We have placed in every town its chief criminals, to scheme in it. But they scheme only against themselves, though they do not perceive it.
-
124
When a sign comes to them, they say, ‘We will not believe until we are given the like of what was given to God's messengers.’ God knows best where to place His message. Those who committed crimes will be struck by humiliation before God and a severe punishment for the schemes they used to devise.
-
125
Whomever God wishes to guide, He opens his breast to Islam; and whomever He wishes to let go astray, He makes his breast tight and constricted, as though he were climbing up into the sky. Thus God lays defilement upon those who do not believe.
-
126
This is the path of your Lord, straight. We have explained the signs in detail for a people who take heed.
-
127
For them will be the Home of Peace with their Lord, and He will be their protector because of what they used to do.
-
128
On the Day He gathers them all together, [He will say], ‘Company of jinn, you misled many of mankind.’ Their allies among mankind will say, ‘Our Lord, we benefited from one another, and we have reached the term You appointed for us.’ He will say, ‘The Fire is your dwelling place, abiding there forever, except as God wills.’ Your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
-
129
Thus We make some of the wrongdoers allies of others because of what they used to earn.
-
130
‘Company of jinn and mankind, did messengers not come to you from among yourselves, relating My signs to you and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?’ They will say, ‘We bear witness against ourselves.’ The life of this world deceived them, and they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers.
-
131
That is because your Lord would not destroy towns for their wrongdoing while their people were unaware.
-
132
For all there are degrees according to what they have done, and your Lord is not unaware of what they do.
-
133
Your Lord is the Self-Sufficient, the Possessor of mercy. If He wills, He can do away with you and cause whom He wills to succeed you, just as He produced you from the descendants of another people.
-
134
What you are promised will surely come, and you cannot escape it.
-
135
Say, ‘My people, act according to your position; I too am acting. You will come to know whose will be the final outcome of the Home. The wrongdoers will not succeed.’
-
136
They assign to God a portion of the crops and livestock He created, and say, ‘This is for God,’ so they claim, ‘and this is for our partner-gods.’ But what is for their partners does not reach God, while what is for God reaches their partners. How evil is their judgement!
-
137
Likewise, their partner-gods have made the killing of their children seem fair to many of the idolaters, so as to ruin them and confuse their religion for them. Had God willed, they would not have done it. So leave them and what they invent.
-
138
They say, ‘These livestock and crops are forbidden; none may eat them except whom we will,’ so they claim. And there are livestock whose backs are forbidden [for riding], and livestock over which they do not mention the name of God, inventing lies about Him. He will repay them for what they used to invent.
-
139
They say, ‘What is in the bellies of these livestock is exclusively for our males and forbidden to our wives; but if it is born dead, they all share in it.’ He will repay them for their attributions. He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.
-
140
Those who kill their children foolishly, without knowledge, and forbid what God has provided for them, inventing lies about God, have certainly lost. They have gone astray and were not rightly guided.
-
141
It is He who produces gardens, trellised and untrellised, and date palms, and crops of varied produce, and olives and pomegranates, alike and unlike. Eat of their fruit when they bear fruit, and give what is due from it on the day of its harvest, but do not be wasteful. He does not love the wasteful.
-
142
And of the livestock, some are for carrying burdens and some are small [or for their hides]. Eat of what God has provided for you, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan; he is your open enemy.
-
143
Eight in pairs: of sheep two, and of goats two. Say, ‘Has He forbidden the two males or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain? Inform me with knowledge, if you are truthful.’
-
144
And of camels two, and of cattle two. Say, ‘Has He forbidden the two males or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain? Or were you witnesses when God enjoined this on you?’ Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about God to lead people astray without knowledge? God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
-
145
Say, ‘In what has been revealed to me I find nothing forbidden to one who would eat it, except carrion, or blood poured out, or the flesh of swine, for that is filth, or an act of defiance: what has been dedicated to other than God.’ But whoever is compelled, neither desiring it nor exceeding the limit, then your Lord is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
146
For those who are Jews We forbade every animal with claws, and of cattle and sheep We forbade them their fat, except what is on their backs or entrails or what is mixed with bone. That was how We repaid them for their rebellion, and We are truthful.

147
If they deny you, say, ‘Your Lord is the Possessor of vast mercy, but His punishment will not be turned back from the criminal people.’
-
148
Those who associate partners [with God] will say, ‘Had God willed, neither we nor our forefathers would have associated partners [with Him], nor would we have forbidden anything.’ Thus did those before them deny, until they tasted Our punishment. Say, ‘Do you have any knowledge that you can bring forth for us? You follow nothing but conjecture, and you only guess.’
-
149
Say, ‘The decisive proof is God's. If He had wished, He would have guided every one of you.’
-
150
Say, ‘Bring your witnesses who will testify that God forbade this.’ If they testify, do not testify with them, and do not follow the desires of those who deny Our signs, who do not believe in the Hereafter, and who set up equals to their Lord.
-
151
Say, ‘Come, I will recite what your Lord has [truly] forbidden you: that you associate nothing with Him; [that you] be good to parents; that you do not kill your children out of poverty, for We provide for you and for them; that you do not approach indecencies, open or secret; and that you do not kill the soul which God has made sacred, except by right. This He has enjoined on you, so that you may use reason.
-
152
Do not approach the property of the orphan except in the best way, until he reaches maturity. Give full measure and weight with justice; We do not burden any soul beyond its capacity. When you speak, be just, even if it concerns a relative. Fulfil the covenant of God. This He has enjoined on you, so that you may take heed.
-
153
This is My path, straight, so follow it, and do not follow [other] ways, lest they scatter you from His way. This He has enjoined on you, so that you may be mindful of Him.’
-
154
Then We gave Moses the Book, completing [Our favour] upon the one who did good, and as a detailed explanation of all things, and as guidance and mercy, so that they might believe in the meeting with their Lord.
-
155
And this is a blessed Book which We have sent down, so follow it and be mindful of God, so that you may receive mercy,
-
156
lest you say, ‘The Book was sent down only to two groups before us, and we were unaware of what they studied,’
-
157
or lest you say, ‘If the Book had been sent down to us, we would have been better guided than they.’ Now a clear proof has come to you from your Lord, and guidance and mercy. Who then is more unjust than one who denies God's signs and turns away from them? We will repay those who turn away from Our signs with the worst punishment for their turning away.
-
158
Are they waiting for anything but that the angels should come to them, or your Lord should come, or some of your Lord's signs should come? On the Day some of your Lord's signs come, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before or earned some good through its faith. Say, ‘Wait; we too are waiting.’
-
159
As for those who have divided their religion and become sects, you have nothing to do with them. Their affair rests only with God; then He will inform them of what they used to do.
-
160
Whoever comes with a good deed will have ten times its like, and whoever comes with an evil deed will be repaid only with its like, and they will not be wronged.
-
161
Say, ‘My Lord has guided me to a straight path, an upright religion, the way of Abraham, upright in faith; and he was not one of the idolaters.’
-
162
Say, ‘My prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for God, Lord of all the worlds.
-
163
He has no partner. This I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims.’
-
164
Say, ‘Shall I seek a lord other than God, when He is the Lord of all things?’ Every soul earns only to its own account, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you about that in which you used to differ.
-
165
It is He who has made you successors on the earth and raised some of you above others in degrees, so that He may test you in what He has given you. Your Lord is swift in punishment, and He is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
