关于本章
Classed as a Medinan sura, this is the longest chapter of the Quran. It begins by presenting the Book as guidance for the God-fearing and describes three groups: believers, disbelievers and hypocrites. It then tells of Adam's creation and Iblis's refusal to bow. A long section addresses the Children of Israel, recalling God's favours and their broken pledges, including the story of the cow Moses told them to slaughter. Abraham and Ishmael raise the foundations of the House, and the direction of prayer is turned towards the Sacred Mosque. The later part gathers rulings on food, legal retribution, bequests, the Ramadan fast, pilgrimage, fighting, marriage and divorce, charity, the ban on usury and the writing down of debts. Along the way come the story of Talut, David and Goliath, the verse on God's all-embracing Throne (255) and the statement that there is no compulsion in religion. It closes with a prayer of the believers.
- Guidance of the Book
- Covenant with Israel
- Abraham and the House
- Fasting and pilgrimage rules
- Charity versus usury
章名由来 The name comes from the story of the cow that Moses told his people to slaughter (verses 67–73).

1
Alif Lam Mim.
-
2
That is the Book—there is no doubt in it—a guidance for the God-fearing,
-
3
who believe in the unseen, keep up the prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them,
-
4
and who have faith in what was revealed to you and in what was revealed before you, and who are firmly convinced of the Hereafter.
-
5
It is they who follow guidance from their Lord, and it is they who will prosper.
-
6
As for those who disbelieve, it is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them; they will not believe.
-
7
God has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their eyes is a covering. For them is a great punishment.
-
8
Among the people are some who say, “We believe in God and in the Last Day,” yet they are not believers.
-
9
They seek to trick God and those who believe, but the only ones they trick are themselves, and they are not aware of it.
-
10
In their hearts is a sickness, and God has increased their sickness. For them is a painful punishment because they used to lie.
-
11
When it is said to them, “Do not spread corruption in the land,” they say, “We are only setting things right.”
-
12
Truly, it is they who spread corruption, but they do not perceive it.
-
13
When it is said to them, “Believe as the people have believed,” they say, “Shall we believe as the fools have believed?” Truly, it is they who are the fools, but they do not know.
-
14
When they meet those who believe, they say, “We believe,” but when they are alone with their devils, they say, “We are with you; we were only mocking.”
-
15
God mocks them and leaves them to go on in their transgression, wandering blindly.
-
16
Those are the ones who have bought error at the price of guidance, so their trade has brought no profit, nor were they rightly guided.
-
17
Their likeness is that of someone who kindled a fire, and when it lit up all around him, God took away their light and left them in darkness, unable to see.
-
18
Deaf, dumb, blind—they will not return.
-
19
Or [it is] like a downpour from the sky, in which are darkness, thunder and lightning. They thrust their fingers into their ears against the thunderclaps, for fear of death. And God encompasses the disbelievers.
-
20
The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Whenever it gives them light they walk on in it, and when darkness falls upon them they stand still. Had God willed, He would have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, God has power over all things.
-
21
O people, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, so that you may be mindful [of Him].
-
22
[It is] He who made the earth a resting place for you and the sky a canopy, and sent down water from the sky and brought forth by it fruits as provision for you. So do not set up rivals to God when you know [better].
-
23
If you are in doubt about what We have sent down to Our servant, then produce a sura like it, and call upon your witnesses other than God, if you are truthful.
-
24
But if you do not—and you never will—then guard yourselves against the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.
-
25
Give good news to those who believe and do righteous deeds that for them are Gardens beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are given fruit from them as provision, they will say, “This is what we were provided with before,” for they will be given things resembling one another. In them they will have purified spouses, and there they will abide forever.
-
26
God is not ashamed to strike a parable, whether of a gnat or of something beyond it. As for those who believe, they know it is the truth from their Lord; but as for those who disbelieve, they say, “What did God intend by this as a parable?” By it He leaves many astray and by it He guides many, yet He leaves none astray by it except the defiantly disobedient,
-
27
who break God’s covenant after it has been confirmed, sever what God has commanded to be joined, and spread corruption in the land. It is they who are the losers.
-
28
How can you disbelieve in God when you were lifeless and He gave you life? Then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you to life again, and then to Him you will be returned.
-
29
It is He who created for you all that is on the earth. Then He turned to the sky and fashioned it into seven heavens. And He has knowledge of all things.
-
30
When your Lord said to the angels, “I am placing a successor on the earth,” they said, “Will You place on it one who will spread corruption there and shed blood, while we glorify You with praise and proclaim Your holiness?” He said, “I know what you do not know.”
-
31
And He taught Adam the names of all things. Then He presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if you are truthful.”
-
32
They said, “Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.”
-
33
He said, “O Adam, tell them their names.” And when he had told them their names, He said, “Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you have been concealing?”
-
34
And when We said to the angels, “Prostrate yourselves before Adam,” they prostrated, except Iblis. He refused and was arrogant, and he was one of the disbelievers.
-
35
And We said, “O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in the Garden, and eat freely from it wherever you both wish, but do not come near this tree, or you will be among the wrongdoers.”
-
36
But Satan made them slip from it and brought them out of the state they were in. And We said, “Go down, [all of you], as enemies to one another. On the earth you will have a dwelling place and provision for a time.”
-
37
Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance. He is indeed the Ever-Relenting, the Most Merciful.
-
38
We said, “Go down from it, all of you. Then when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance—no fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
-
39
But those who disbelieve and deny Our signs—they are the companions of the Fire; they will abide in it forever.”
-
40
O Children of Israel, remember My favour that I bestowed upon you, and fulfil My covenant and I will fulfil your covenant, and fear Me alone.
-
41
Believe in what I have sent down, confirming what is with you, and do not be the first to disbelieve in it. Do not sell My signs for a small price, and be mindful of Me alone.
-
42
Do not cloak the truth in falsehood, and do not hide the truth when you know [it] well.
-
43
Keep up the prayer, give the alms, and bow down with those who bow down.
-
44
Do you command people to righteousness and forget yourselves, while you recite the Book? Will you not use your reason?
-
45
Seek help through patience and prayer. It is indeed hard, except for the humble,
-
46
who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that to Him they will return.
-
47
O Children of Israel, remember My favour that I bestowed upon you, and that I favoured you above all peoples.
-
48
And guard yourselves against a Day when no soul will avail another in the least, no intercession will be accepted from it, no ransom will be taken from it, and they will not be helped.
-
49
And [remember] when We delivered you from Pharaoh’s people, who inflicted terrible torment on you, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. In that was a great trial from your Lord.
-
50
And when We parted the sea for you, and saved you, and drowned Pharaoh’s people while you were looking on.
-
51
And when We appointed forty nights for Moses, then you took the calf [for worship] in his absence, and you were wrongdoers.
-
52
Then We pardoned you after that, so that you might be grateful.
-
53
And when We gave Moses the Book and the Criterion, so that you might be guided.
-
54
And when Moses said to his people, “My people, you have wronged yourselves by taking the calf [for worship], so turn in repentance to your Maker and slay [the guilty among] yourselves. That is better for you in the sight of your Maker.” Then He accepted your repentance. He is indeed the Ever-Relenting, the Most Merciful.
-
55
And when you said, “Moses, we will not believe you until we see God plainly,” the thunderbolt seized you while you were looking on.
-
56
Then We raised you up after your death, so that you might be grateful.
-
57
And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails: “Eat of the good things We have provided for you.” They did not wrong Us; rather, it was themselves they wronged.
-
58
And when We said, “Enter this town and eat freely from it wherever you wish, and enter the gate bowing down, and say, ‘Relieve us [of our burdens],’ and We will forgive you your sins, and We will give more to those who do good.”
-
59
But the wrongdoers replaced the word they had been given with another, so We sent down upon the wrongdoers a plague from the sky because they kept disobeying.
-
60
And when Moses prayed for water for his people, We said, “Strike the rock with your staff.” Then twelve springs gushed out of it, and each tribe knew its drinking place. “Eat and drink of God’s provision, and do not go about the land spreading corruption.”
-
61
And when you said, “Moses, we cannot endure one [kind of] food, so call upon your Lord for us to bring forth for us some of what the earth grows—its herbs, its cucumbers, its garlic, its lentils and its onions,” he said, “Would you exchange what is better for what is lower? Go down to any town and you will have what you have asked for.” And humiliation and wretchedness were stamped upon them, and they drew upon themselves anger from God. That was because they used to disbelieve in God’s signs and kill the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and kept transgressing.
-
62
Indeed, those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians and the Sabians—whoever believes in God and the Last Day and does righteous deeds will have their reward with their Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
-
63
And when We took your pledge and raised the Mount above you, [saying], “Hold firmly to what We have given you and remember what is in it, so that you may be mindful [of God].”
-
64
Then you turned away after that. Had it not been for God’s grace upon you and His mercy, you would surely have been among the losers.
-
65
You certainly know of those among you who broke the Sabbath, and We said to them, “Be apes, despised.”
-
66
So We made it a deterrent for those of their time and those after them, and a lesson for the God-fearing.
-
67
And when Moses said to his people, “God commands you to slaughter a cow,” they said, “Are you making fun of us?” He said, “I seek refuge with God from being one of the ignorant.”
-
68
They said, “Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us what she is.” He said, “He says she is a cow neither old nor young, but of middle age between the two. So do what you are commanded.”
-
69
They said, “Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us what her colour is.” He said, “He says she is a yellow cow, bright in colour, pleasing to those who see her.”
-
70
They said, “Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us what she is. Cows all look alike to us, and if God wills, we will surely be guided.”
-
71
He said, “He says she is a cow not trained to plough the land or water the fields, sound and without blemish.” They said, “Now you have brought the truth.” So they slaughtered her, though they nearly did not do it.
-
72
And when you killed a person and disputed with one another about it—but God was to bring out what you were concealing—
-
73
We said, “Strike him with part of her.” Thus God brings the dead to life and shows you His signs, so that you may use your reason.
-
74
Then after that your hearts hardened, becoming like stones or even harder. For there are stones from which rivers gush forth, and some that split open and water comes out of them, and some that fall down in fear of God. And God is not unaware of what you do.
-
75
Do you [believers] hope that they will believe you, when a party of them used to hear the word of God and then distort it knowingly after they had understood it?
-
76
When they meet those who believe, they say, “We believe,” but when they are alone with one another, they say, “Will you tell them what God has disclosed to you, so that they may argue against you with it before your Lord? Do you not use your reason?”
-
77
Do they not know that God knows what they keep secret and what they make public?
-
78
And among them are unlettered people who do not know the Book except as wishful notions; they do nothing but guess.
-
79
So woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say, “This is from God,” in order to sell it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn.
-
80
They say, “The Fire will not touch us except for a limited number of days.” Say, “Have you taken a promise from God—for God never breaks His promise—or do you say about God what you do not know?”
-
81
Not so! Whoever earns evil and is surrounded by his sins—they are the companions of the Fire; they will abide in it forever.
-
82
But those who believe and do righteous deeds—they are the companions of the Garden; they will abide in it forever.
-
83
And when We took the pledge of the Children of Israel: “Worship none but God; be good to your parents and to relatives, orphans and the needy; speak kindly to people; keep up the prayer and give the alms.” Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you are averse.
-
84
And when We took your pledge: “Do not shed one another’s blood or drive one another out of your homes.” Then you affirmed it, and you bear witness to it.
-
85
Yet here you are, killing one another and driving a party of your own out of their homes, backing one another against them in sin and aggression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, though their expulsion was itself forbidden to you. Do you then believe in part of the Book and disbelieve in part? What is the recompense for those of you who do this but disgrace in the life of this world? And on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest punishment. God is not unaware of what you do.
-
86
Those are the ones who have bought the life of this world at the price of the Hereafter, so the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be helped.
-
87
We gave Moses the Book and sent messengers in succession after him. And We gave Jesus son of Mary clear proofs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Is it that whenever a messenger came to you with what your souls did not desire, you grew arrogant, denying some and killing others?
-
88
They say, “Our hearts are wrapped up.” No! God has cursed them for their disbelief, so little is it that they believe.
-
89
And when a Book came to them from God confirming what was with them—though before that they used to pray for victory over those who disbelieved—when there came to them what they recognised, they disbelieved in it. So God’s curse is upon the disbelievers.
-
90
Wretched is that for which they have sold their souls: that they disbelieve in what God has sent down, resenting that God should send down His grace upon whomever He wills of His servants. So they have drawn upon themselves anger upon anger. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment.
-
91
When it is said to them, “Believe in what God has sent down,” they say, “We believe in what was sent down to us,” and they disbelieve in what came after it, though it is the truth confirming what is with them. Say, “Why then did you kill God’s prophets before, if you were believers?”
-
92
Moses came to you with clear proofs, yet you took the calf [for worship] in his absence, and you were wrongdoers.
-
93
And when We took your pledge and raised the Mount above you, [saying], “Hold firmly to what We have given you and listen,” they said, “We hear and we disobey.” And the calf was made to soak into their hearts because of their disbelief. Say, “Wretched is what your faith commands you, if you are believers.”
-
94
Say, “If the home of the Hereafter with God is yours alone, to the exclusion of other people, then wish for death, if you are truthful.”
-
95
But they will never wish for it, because of what their hands have sent ahead. And God knows the wrongdoers well.
-
96
You will surely find them the most eager of people for life—even more than the idolaters. Each one of them wishes he could be given a life of a thousand years, yet being granted long life would not remove him from the punishment. And God sees what they do.
-
97
Say, “Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel—it is he who has brought it down upon your heart by God’s permission, confirming what came before it, and as guidance and good news for the believers.”
-
98
Whoever is an enemy to God, His angels, His messengers, Gabriel and Michael—then God is indeed an enemy to the disbelievers.
-
99
We have certainly sent down to you clear signs, and none disbelieve in them except the defiantly disobedient.
-
100
Is it not so that every time they make a covenant, a party of them casts it aside? In fact, most of them do not believe.
-
101
And when a messenger came to them from God confirming what was with them, a party of those who had been given the Book cast the Book of God behind their backs as if they did not know.
-
102
They followed what the devils recited during the reign of Solomon. Solomon did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and what had been sent down to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. Yet these two taught no one without first saying, “We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve.” From them people learned what would cause separation between a man and his wife, though they could harm no one by it except by God’s permission. They learned what harmed them and did not benefit them, and they knew well that whoever bought it would have no share in the Hereafter. Wretched indeed is that for which they sold their souls, if only they knew!
-
103
Had they believed and been mindful [of God], the reward from God would surely have been better, if only they knew!
-
104
O you who believe, do not say, “Ra‘ina,” but say, “Unzurna,” and listen. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
-
105
Neither those who disbelieve among the People of the Book nor the idolaters would like any good to be sent down to you from your Lord. But God singles out for His mercy whomever He wills, and God is the Possessor of immense grace.
-
106
Whatever verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it. Do you not know that God has power over all things?
-
107
Do you not know that to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and that besides God you have no protector and no helper?
-
108
Or do you want to question your Messenger as Moses was questioned before? Whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has strayed from the right way.
-
109
Many of the People of the Book wish they could turn you back into disbelievers after your faith, out of envy from within themselves, even after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until God brings His command. Indeed, God has power over all things.
-
110
Keep up the prayer and give the alms. Whatever good you send ahead for yourselves, you will find it with God. Indeed, God sees what you do.
-
111
And they say, “None will enter the Garden except one who is a Jew or a Christian.” Those are their wishful notions. Say, “Bring your proof, if you are truthful.”
-
112
Not so! Whoever submits his face to God while doing good will have his reward with his Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
-
113
The Jews say, “The Christians have nothing to stand on,” and the Christians say, “The Jews have nothing to stand on,” though they both recite the Book. Likewise those who do not know say the same as they say. God will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning what they used to differ about.
-
114
Who does greater wrong than one who prevents God’s name from being mentioned in His places of worship and strives to ruin them? Such people ought not to enter them except in fear. For them is disgrace in this world, and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.
-
115
To God belong the east and the west, so wherever you turn, there is the Face of God. Indeed, God is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
-
116
They say, “God has taken a son.” Glory be to Him! Rather, to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth; all are devoutly obedient to Him.
-
117
Originator of the heavens and the earth—when He decrees a matter, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is.
-
118
Those who do not know say, “Why does God not speak to us, or a sign come to us?” Those before them said the same as they say; their hearts are alike. We have made the signs clear for people who are certain.
-
119
We have sent you with the truth as a bearer of good news and a warner, and you will not be questioned about the companions of the Blaze.
-
120
Neither the Jews nor the Christians will be pleased with you until you follow their creed. Say, “God’s guidance is the [true] guidance.” If you were to follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you would have no protector or helper against God.
-
121
Those to whom We have given the Book recite it as it should be recited; it is they who believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it—it is they who are the losers.
-
122
O Children of Israel, remember My favour that I bestowed upon you, and that I favoured you above all peoples.
-
123
And guard yourselves against a Day when no soul will avail another in the least, no ransom will be accepted from it, no intercession will benefit it, and they will not be helped.
-
124
And when Abraham’s Lord tested him with certain commands and he fulfilled them, He said, “I will make you a leader for the people.” [Abraham] said, “And of my descendants?” He said, “My covenant does not extend to the wrongdoers.”
-
125
And when We made the House a place of return for people and a sanctuary, [saying], “Take the station of Abraham as a place of prayer.” And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, “Purify My House for those who circle it, those who stay there in devotion, and those who bow and prostrate.”
-
126
And when Abraham said, “My Lord, make this a secure land and provide its people with fruits—those of them who believe in God and the Last Day,” He said, “And whoever disbelieves, I will let him enjoy [life] a little, then I will drive him to the punishment of the Fire. What a wretched destination!”
-
127
And when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House, together with Ishmael, [they prayed], “Our Lord, accept [this] from us. You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
-
128
Our Lord, make us both Muslims [in submission] to You, and of our descendants a community submitting to You. Show us our rites of worship and accept our repentance. You are the Ever-Relenting, the Most Merciful.
-
129
Our Lord, raise up among them a messenger from among themselves who will recite Your verses to them, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.”
-
130
Who would turn away from the creed of Abraham except one who makes a fool of himself? We chose him in this world, and in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous.
-
131
When his Lord said to him, “Submit,” he said, “I submit to the Lord of all the worlds.”
-
132
Abraham enjoined this upon his sons, and so did Jacob: “My sons, God has chosen this religion for you, so do not die except as Muslims.”
-
133
Or were you witnesses when death came to Jacob, when he said to his sons, “What will you worship after me?” They said, “We will worship your God and the God of your forefathers, Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac—one God—and to Him we submit.”
-
134
That was a community that has passed away. It will have what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. You will not be questioned about what they used to do.
-
135
They say, “Be Jews or Christians and you will be guided.” Say, “Rather, [we follow] the creed of Abraham, upright in faith, and he was not one of the idolaters.”
-
136
Say, “We believe in God and in what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, and what was given to Moses and Jesus, and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we submit.”
-
137
So if they believe in the same as you believe in, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, they are only in dissension. God will suffice you against them. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
-
138
[Ours is] the colouring of God—and who gives a better colouring than God? And Him we worship.
-
139
Say, “Do you argue with us about God, when He is our Lord and your Lord? To us our deeds and to you your deeds, and we are sincere to Him.
-
140
Or do you say that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes were Jews or Christians?” Say, “Do you know better, or God?” Who does greater wrong than one who conceals a testimony he has from God? And God is not unaware of what you do.
-
141
That was a community that has passed away. It will have what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. You will not be questioned about what they used to do.
-
142
The foolish among the people will say, “What has turned them away from the direction of prayer they used to face?” Say, “To God belong the east and the west. He guides whomever He wills to a straight path.”
-
143
And thus We have made you a balanced community, so that you may be witnesses over the people and the Messenger may be a witness over you. We appointed the direction of prayer you used to face only so that We might distinguish who follows the Messenger from who turns back on his heels. It was indeed hard, except for those whom God has guided. And God would never let your faith go to waste. Indeed, God is Most Kind and Most Merciful to people.
-
144
We have seen you turning your face towards the sky, so We will surely turn you to a direction of prayer that will please you. So turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you [believers] may be, turn your faces towards it. Those who were given the Book know well that it is the truth from their Lord. And God is not unaware of what they do.
-
145
Even if you were to bring every sign to those who were given the Book, they would not follow your direction of prayer, nor will you follow their direction of prayer, nor do they follow one another’s direction of prayer. If you were to follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you would then surely be among the wrongdoers.
-
146
Those to whom We have given the Book recognise it as they recognise their own sons, yet a party of them knowingly conceal the truth.
-
147
The truth is from your Lord, so never be among the doubters.
-
148
Each has a direction towards which it turns, so race one another in good deeds. Wherever you may be, God will bring you all together. Indeed, God has power over all things.
-
149
From wherever you set out, turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque. This is indeed the truth from your Lord, and God is not unaware of what you do.
-
150
From wherever you set out, turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you [believers] may be, turn your faces towards it, so that people will have no argument against you—except those of them who do wrong. So do not fear them, but fear Me, so that I may complete My favour upon you and so that you may be guided.
-
151
Just as We have sent among you a messenger from among yourselves, who recites Our verses to you, purifies you, teaches you the Book and wisdom, and teaches you what you did not know.
-
152
So remember Me, and I will remember you. Be grateful to Me, and do not be ungrateful to Me.
-
153
O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, God is with those who are patient.
-
154
And do not say of those who are killed in the way of God, “They are dead.” Rather, they are alive, but you do not perceive it.
-
155
We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and loss of wealth, lives and fruits. But give good news to those who are patient,
-
156
who, when a misfortune strikes them, say, “Indeed we belong to God, and indeed to Him we will return.”
-
157
It is they upon whom are blessings from their Lord, and mercy; and it is they who are rightly guided.
-
158
Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of God. So whoever performs the pilgrimage (Hajj) to the House or the lesser pilgrimage (Umrah), there is no blame on him for going between them. And whoever does good of his own accord—God is Appreciative, All-Knowing.
-
159
Those who conceal the clear proofs and guidance We have sent down, after We have made it clear to people in the Book—they are cursed by God and cursed by those who curse,
-
160
except those who repent, set things right and make [the truth] clear. Those I will turn to in forgiveness, and I am the Ever-Relenting, the Most Merciful.
-
161
Those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers—upon them is the curse of God and of the angels and of all people,
-
162
abiding in it forever. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be granted respite.
-
163
Your God is one God; there is no god but Him, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
-
164
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, the alternation of night and day, the ships that sail the sea with what benefits people, the water God sends down from the sky, giving life by it to the earth after its death and scattering in it every kind of creature, the shifting of the winds, and the clouds made subservient between the sky and the earth—are signs for people who use their reason.
-
165
Yet among the people are some who take besides God rivals whom they love as they [should] love God. But those who believe are stronger in their love for God. If only the wrongdoers could see—as they will see when they face the punishment—that all power belongs to God and that God is severe in punishment.
-
166
When those who were followed disown those who followed them, and they see the punishment, and all ties between them are cut off,
-
167
those who followed will say, “If only we had another chance, we would disown them as they have disowned us.” Thus God will show them their deeds as bitter regrets for them, and they will not come out of the Fire.
-
168
O people, eat of what is lawful and good on the earth, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. He is indeed a clear enemy to you.
-
169
He only commands you to do evil and indecency, and to say about God what you do not know.
-
170
When it is said to them, “Follow what God has sent down,” they say, “Rather, we will follow what we found our forefathers upon.” What! Even if their forefathers understood nothing and were not guided?
-
171
The likeness of those who disbelieve is that of one who shouts at what hears nothing but a call and a cry. Deaf, dumb, blind—they do not understand.
-
172
O you who believe, eat of the good things We have provided for you, and give thanks to God, if it is Him you worship.
-
173
He has forbidden you only carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and what has been dedicated to other than God. But whoever is compelled [by necessity], neither seeking it out of desire nor exceeding [what is needed], commits no sin. Indeed, God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
174
Those who conceal what God has sent down of the Book and sell it for a small price—they consume nothing but fire into their bellies. God will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and for them is a painful punishment.
-
175
Those are the ones who have bought error at the price of guidance, and punishment at the price of forgiveness. How patient they are in [facing] the Fire!
-
176
That is because God has sent down the Book with the truth, and those who differ over the Book are in deep dissension.
-
177
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces towards the east or the west. Rather, the righteous is one who believes in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Book and the prophets; who gives wealth, despite loving it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveller, those who ask, and for freeing slaves; who keeps up the prayer and gives the alms; and [the righteous are] those who fulfil their promises when they make them, and are patient in hardship and adversity and in times of battle. It is they who are true, and it is they who are the God-fearing.
-
178
O you who believe, legal retribution is prescribed for you in cases of killing: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. But if one is granted some pardon by his brother, then let it be pursued in fairness and payment made to him with kindness. That is a lightening [of the law] from your Lord and a mercy. Whoever transgresses after that will have a painful punishment.
-
179
In legal retribution there is life for you, O people of understanding, so that you may be mindful [of God].
-
180
It is prescribed for you, when death approaches one of you and he leaves wealth behind, to make a bequest to parents and close relatives in fairness—a duty upon the God-fearing.
-
181
Whoever alters it after having heard it, the sin is only upon those who alter it. Indeed, God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
-
182
But whoever fears from the one making the bequest some unjust leaning or sin, and makes peace between them, commits no sin. Indeed, God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
183
O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may be mindful [of God],
-
184
for a fixed number of days. But whoever of you is ill or on a journey, then [let him fast] the same number of other days. And for those who can fast only with great difficulty there is a ransom: feeding a needy person. Whoever does more good of his own accord, it is better for him. And to fast is better for you, if only you knew.
-
185
The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Quran was sent down as guidance for people, with clear proofs of guidance and the Criterion. So whoever of you is present in the month, let him fast in it; and whoever is ill or on a journey, then [let him fast] the same number of other days. God wants ease for you and does not want hardship for you, and [He wants] you to complete the number [of days] and to proclaim God’s greatness for having guided you, so that you may be grateful.
-
186
When My servants ask you about Me—I am near. I answer the call of the caller when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, so that they may be rightly guided.
-
187
It is made lawful for you to go in to your wives on the night of the fast. They are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them. God knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He turned to you in forgiveness and pardoned you. So now you may lie with them and seek what God has ordained for you. Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread, then complete the fast until nightfall. But do not lie with them while you are staying in devotion in the mosques. These are the limits set by God, so do not come near them. Thus God makes His signs clear to people, so that they may be mindful [of Him].
-
188
Do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly, nor offer it [as bribes] to the judges so that you may knowingly consume a portion of other people’s wealth sinfully.
-
189
They ask you about the new moons. Say, “They are markers of time for people and for the pilgrimage.” Righteousness is not that you enter houses from the back; rather, the righteous is one who is mindful [of God]. Enter houses by their doors, and be mindful of God, so that you may prosper.
-
190
Fight in the way of God those who fight you, but do not transgress. Indeed, God does not love the transgressors.
-
191
Kill them wherever you encounter them, and drive them out from where they drove you out, for persecution is worse than killing. But do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque unless they fight you there. If they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.
-
192
But if they cease, then indeed God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
193
Fight them until there is no more persecution and religion is for God. But if they cease, there is to be no hostility except against the wrongdoers.
-
194
A sacred month for a sacred month, and violations of sanctity call for retribution. So whoever attacks you, attack him in the same measure as he attacked you. Be mindful of God, and know that God is with the God-fearing.
-
195
Spend in the way of God, and do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction. And do good; indeed, God loves those who do good.
-
196
Complete the pilgrimage and the lesser pilgrimage for God. But if you are prevented, then [offer] whatever sacrificial animal is easy to obtain, and do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal reaches its place. Whoever of you is ill or has an ailment of the scalp must offer a ransom of fasting, charity or sacrifice. When you are safe, whoever combines the lesser pilgrimage with the pilgrimage must offer whatever sacrificial animal is easy to obtain. Whoever cannot find one must fast three days during the pilgrimage and seven when you have returned—that is ten in all. This is for one whose family does not live near the Sacred Mosque. Be mindful of God, and know that God is severe in retribution.
-
197
The pilgrimage is [in] well-known months. Whoever undertakes the pilgrimage in them, there is to be no sexual relations, no wrongdoing and no quarrelling during the pilgrimage. Whatever good you do, God knows it. Take provisions, but the best provision is mindfulness of God. So be mindful of Me, O people of understanding.
-
198
There is no blame on you for seeking bounty from your Lord. When you pour down from Arafat, remember God at the Sacred Landmark. Remember Him as He has guided you, though before this you were among those astray.
-
199
Then pour down from where the people pour down, and ask God for forgiveness. Indeed, God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
200
When you have completed your rites, remember God as you remember your forefathers, or with even more remembrance. Among the people are some who say, “Our Lord, give us [good] in this world,” and they will have no share in the Hereafter.
-
201
And among them are some who say, “Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
-
202
It is they who will have a share of what they have earned. And God is swift in reckoning.
-
203
Remember God during the appointed days. Whoever hastens [to leave] after two days, there is no sin on him, and whoever stays on, there is no sin on him—for one who is mindful [of God]. Be mindful of God, and know that to Him you will be gathered.
-
204
Among the people is one whose speech about the life of this world impresses you, and he calls God to witness what is in his heart, yet he is the most hostile of opponents.
-
205
When he turns away, he hastens about the land to spread corruption in it and to destroy crops and livestock. And God does not love corruption.
-
206
When it is said to him, “Be mindful of God,” pride in sin takes hold of him. Hell is enough for him—what a wretched resting place!
-
207
And among the people is one who sells himself seeking the pleasure of God. And God is Most Kind to His servants.
-
208
O you who believe, enter into peace completely, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. He is indeed a clear enemy to you.
-
209
But if you slip after the clear proofs have come to you, then know that God is Almighty, All-Wise.
-
210
Are they waiting for nothing but that God should come to them in canopies of cloud, together with the angels, and the matter be settled? And to God all matters are returned.
-
211
Ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We gave them. Whoever alters God’s favour after it has come to him—God is indeed severe in retribution.
-
212
The life of this world has been made attractive to those who disbelieve, and they mock those who believe. But those who are mindful [of God] will be above them on the Day of Resurrection. And God provides for whomever He wills without measure.
-
213
Mankind was a single community; then God sent the prophets as bearers of good news and as warners, and sent down with them the Book with the truth to judge between people concerning what they differed about. And none differed about it except those who had been given it, after the clear proofs had come to them, out of rivalry among themselves. Then God, by His permission, guided those who believed to the truth concerning what they had differed about. And God guides whomever He wills to a straight path.
-
214
Or do you think that you will enter the Garden while there has not yet come to you the like of what came to those who passed away before you? Hardship and adversity touched them, and they were so shaken that the Messenger and those who believed with him said, “When will God’s help come?” Truly, God’s help is near.
-
215
They ask you what they should spend. Say, “Whatever good you spend should be for parents, close relatives, orphans, the needy and the traveller. And whatever good you do, God knows it well.”
-
216
Fighting has been prescribed for you, though you dislike it. But it may be that you dislike something while it is good for you, and it may be that you love something while it is bad for you. God knows, and you do not know.
-
217
They ask you about fighting in the sacred month. Say, “Fighting in it is a grave matter; but turning [people] away from the way of God, disbelieving in Him, [barring access to] the Sacred Mosque and expelling its people from it are graver in the sight of God. And persecution is graver than killing.” They will not stop fighting you until they turn you back from your religion, if they can. Whoever of you turns back from his religion and dies a disbeliever—their deeds have come to nothing in this world and the Hereafter. They are the companions of the Fire; they will abide in it forever.
-
218
Indeed, those who believe and those who have emigrated and striven in the way of God—it is they who hope for God’s mercy. And God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
219
They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say, “In both there is great sin and some benefits for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit.” And they ask you what they should spend. Say, “What is surplus.” Thus God makes the signs clear to you, so that you may reflect
-
220
on this world and the Hereafter. And they ask you about orphans. Say, “Setting their affairs right is best. If you mix your affairs with theirs, they are your brothers. God knows the one who corrupts from the one who sets right. Had God willed, He could have put you in difficulty. Indeed, God is Almighty, All-Wise.”
-
221
Do not marry idolatrous women until they believe. A believing slave woman is better than an idolatrous woman, even if she pleases you. And do not marry [your women] to idolatrous men until they believe. A believing slave is better than an idolatrous man, even if he pleases you. Those [idolaters] invite to the Fire, while God invites to the Garden and to forgiveness by His permission, and He makes His signs clear to people, so that they may take heed.
-
222
They ask you about menstruation. Say, “It is a harm, so keep away from women during menstruation, and do not approach them until they are clean. When they have purified themselves, then go to them as God has commanded you.” Indeed, God loves those who turn [to Him] in repentance, and He loves those who purify themselves.
-
223
Your wives are a tilth for you, so go to your tilth as you wish, and send ahead [good] for yourselves. Be mindful of God, and know that you will meet Him. And give good news to the believers.
-
224
Do not make God[’s name] an excuse in your oaths against doing good, being mindful [of God], and making peace between people. And God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
-
225
God will not take you to task for what is thoughtless in your oaths, but He will take you to task for what your hearts have earned. And God is Most Forgiving, Forbearing.
-
226
For those who swear to abstain from their wives, there is a waiting period of four months. If they go back [on their oath], then God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
227
And if they resolve on divorce, then God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
-
228
Divorced women shall wait by themselves for three monthly cycles. It is not lawful for them to conceal what God has created in their wombs, if they believe in God and the Last Day. Their husbands have the better right to take them back during that time, if they desire reconciliation. And women have rights similar to the obligations upon them, according to what is fair, while men have a degree over them. And God is Almighty, All-Wise.
-
229
Divorce is twice; then [the wife is] either kept on in fairness or released with kindness. It is not lawful for you to take back anything of what you have given them, unless both fear that they cannot keep within the limits set by God. If you fear that they cannot keep within God’s limits, there is no blame on either of them for what she gives up to free herself. These are the limits set by God, so do not overstep them. Whoever oversteps the limits set by God—it is they who are the wrongdoers.
-
230
If he divorces her [a third time], she is not lawful for him afterwards until she marries another husband. If the latter divorces her, there is no blame on the two of them for returning to one another, if they think they can keep within the limits set by God. These are the limits set by God, which He makes clear for people who know.
-
231
When you divorce women and they reach the end of their waiting period, either keep them on in fairness or release them in fairness. But do not keep them on to harm them, so that you transgress. Whoever does that has wronged himself. Do not take God’s signs in mockery. Remember God’s favour upon you, and what He has sent down to you of the Book and wisdom, by which He instructs you. Be mindful of God, and know that God has knowledge of all things.
-
232
When you divorce women and they reach the end of their waiting period, do not prevent them from marrying their [former] husbands if they agree among themselves in fairness. This is an instruction for whoever of you believes in God and the Last Day. That is purer and cleaner for you. God knows, and you do not know.
-
233
Mothers shall nurse their children for two full years, for whoever wishes to complete the nursing. The father is responsible for their food and clothing in fairness. No soul is burdened beyond its capacity. No mother shall be made to suffer because of her child, nor any father because of his child. The same is due from the heir. If both desire weaning by mutual consent and consultation, there is no blame on them. And if you wish to have your children nursed [by a wet nurse], there is no blame on you, provided you pay what you have agreed in fairness. Be mindful of God, and know that God sees what you do.
-
234
Those of you who die and leave wives behind—the wives shall wait by themselves for four months and ten [days]. When they reach the end of their waiting period, there is no blame on you for what they do with themselves in fairness. And God is All-Aware of what you do.
-
235
There is no blame on you for hinting at a proposal of marriage to [such] women, or for keeping it hidden in yourselves. God knows that you will be thinking of them. But do not make a secret promise with them—only speak in a fitting manner. And do not resolve on the marriage contract until the prescribed term has run its course. Know that God knows what is in your souls, so beware of Him. And know that God is Most Forgiving, Forbearing.
-
236
There is no blame on you if you divorce women before you have touched them or appointed a dowry for them. But provide for them—the wealthy according to his means and the poor according to his means—a provision in fairness, a duty upon those who do good.
-
237
If you divorce them before you have touched them but after you have appointed a dowry for them, then [give them] half of what you appointed, unless they forgo it or the one in whose hand is the marriage contract forgoes it. And to forgo is nearer to mindfulness of God. Do not forget generosity between you. Indeed, God sees what you do.
-
238
Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand before God in devout obedience.
-
239
If you are in fear, then [pray] on foot or riding. But when you are safe, remember God, as He has taught you what you did not know.
-
240
Those of you who die and leave wives behind should make a bequest for their wives: provision for a year without being turned out. But if they leave [of their own accord], there is no blame on you for what they do with themselves in fairness. And God is Almighty, All-Wise.
-
241
Divorced women are to be given provision in fairness—a duty upon the God-fearing.
-
242
Thus God makes His signs clear to you, so that you may use your reason.
-
243
Have you not considered those who left their homes in their thousands for fear of death? God said to them, “Die,” and then He brought them back to life. Indeed, God is bountiful to people, but most people are not grateful.
-
244
Fight in the way of God, and know that God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
-
245
Who is it that will lend God a goodly loan, which He will multiply for him many times over? God withholds and grants in abundance, and to Him you will be returned.
-
246
Have you not considered the chiefs of the Children of Israel after Moses, when they said to a prophet of theirs, “Appoint for us a king, and we will fight in the way of God”? He said, “Might it be that if fighting were prescribed for you, you would not fight?” They said, “Why should we not fight in the way of God when we have been driven out of our homes and [separated from] our children?” But when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away, except a few of them. And God knows the wrongdoers well.
-
247
Their prophet said to them, “God has appointed Talut as king over you.” They said, “How can he have kingship over us when we are more deserving of kingship than he, and he has not been given abundant wealth?” He said, “God has chosen him over you and increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature. God gives His kingship to whomever He wills. And God is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.”
-
248
Their prophet said to them, “The sign of his kingship is that the Ark will come to you, in which is tranquillity from your Lord and a remnant of what the family of Moses and the family of Aaron left behind, carried by the angels. In that is surely a sign for you, if you are believers.”
-
249
When Talut set out with the troops, he said, “God will test you with a river. Whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is of me, except one who scoops up a handful with his hand.” But they drank from it, except a few of them. When he and those who believed with him had crossed it, they said, “We have no strength today against Goliath and his troops.” Those who were certain that they would meet God said, “How many a small company has overcome a large company by God’s permission! And God is with those who are patient.”
-
250
When they went out to face Goliath and his troops, they said, “Our Lord, pour patience upon us, make our feet firm, and help us against the disbelieving people.”
-
251
So they defeated them by God’s permission, and David killed Goliath, and God gave him kingship and wisdom and taught him what He willed. Had God not repelled some people by means of others, the earth would have been filled with corruption. But God is bountiful to all the worlds.
-
252
These are the verses of God, which We recite to you in truth. And you are indeed one of the messengers.
-
253
Those messengers—We favoured some of them above others. Among them were some to whom God spoke, and some He raised in rank. And We gave Jesus son of Mary clear proofs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Had God willed, those who came after them would not have fought one another after the clear proofs had come to them. But they differed: some of them believed and some of them disbelieved. Had God willed, they would not have fought one another, but God does whatever He intends.
-
254
O you who believe, spend out of what We have provided for you before a Day comes in which there is no trading, no friendship and no intercession. And the disbelievers—it is they who are the wrongdoers.
-
255
God—there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Seat extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not weary Him. He is the Most High, the Most Great.
-
256
There is no compulsion in religion. The right way has become clearly distinct from error. So whoever rejects false gods and believes in God has grasped the firmest handhold, which will never break. And God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
-
257
God is the protector of those who believe; He brings them out of darkness into light. As for those who disbelieve, their protectors are false gods, who bring them out of light into darkness. They are the companions of the Fire; they will abide in it forever.
-
258
Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord, because God had given him kingship? When Abraham said, “My Lord is He who gives life and causes death,” he said, “I give life and cause death.” Abraham said, “God brings the sun from the east, so bring it from the west.” Then the one who disbelieved was dumbfounded. And God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
-
259
Or [consider] the one who passed by a town that had collapsed upon its roofs. He said, “How will God bring this to life after its death?” So God caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him up. He said, “How long have you remained?” He said, “I have remained a day or part of a day.” He said, “Rather, you have remained a hundred years. Look at your food and your drink; they have not spoiled. And look at your donkey—and [We did this] so that We might make you a sign for people. And look at the bones, how We raise them up and then clothe them with flesh.” When it became clear to him, he said, “I know that God has power over all things.”
-
260
And when Abraham said, “My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead,” He said, “Do you not believe?” He said, “Yes, but [I ask] so that my heart may be at rest.” He said, “Take four birds and draw them to yourself, then put a part of them on every hill, then call them; they will come to you in haste. And know that God is Almighty, All-Wise.”
-
261
The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of God is that of a grain that sprouts seven ears, in every ear a hundred grains. God multiplies [it] for whomever He wills. And God is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
-
262
Those who spend their wealth in the way of God and then do not follow up what they have spent with reminders [of their generosity] or hurtful words will have their reward with their Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
-
263
A kind word and forgiveness are better than charity followed by hurt. And God is Self-Sufficient, Forbearing.
-
264
O you who believe, do not cancel out your charity with reminders and hurt, like one who spends his wealth to be seen by people and does not believe in God and the Last Day. His likeness is that of a smooth rock covered with soil; a heavy rain falls on it and leaves it bare. They have no power over anything of what they have earned. And God does not guide the disbelieving people.
-
265
And the likeness of those who spend their wealth seeking God’s pleasure and to strengthen their own souls is that of a garden on a hill: a heavy rain falls on it and it yields its fruit twofold; and if no heavy rain falls on it, then a drizzle [suffices]. And God sees what you do.
-
266
Would any of you wish to have a garden of palms and vines, with rivers flowing beneath it and all kinds of fruit in it for him, while old age has struck him and he has weak offspring—and then a fiery whirlwind strikes it and it is burnt up? Thus God makes the signs clear to you, so that you may reflect.
-
267
O you who believe, spend of the good things you have earned and of what We have brought forth for you from the earth. Do not set out to give the worthless part of it, which you yourselves would not take except with your eyes closed. And know that God is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.
-
268
Satan threatens you with poverty and commands you to indecency, while God promises you forgiveness from Himself and bounty. And God is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.

269
He gives wisdom to whomever He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has been given much good. But none take heed except people of understanding.
-
270
Whatever you spend and whatever vow you make, God knows it. And the wrongdoers will have no helpers.
-
271
If you give charity openly, it is good; but if you conceal it and give it to the poor, that is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your misdeeds. And God is All-Aware of what you do.
-
272
It is not on you [O Prophet] to guide them, but God guides whomever He wills. Whatever good you spend is for yourselves, and you do not spend except seeking the Face of God. Whatever good you spend will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.
-
273
[Charity is] for the poor who are wholly occupied in the way of God and cannot move about in the land [to earn a living]. The unknowing take them to be wealthy because of their restraint. You will recognise them by their mark; they do not beg from people insistently. And whatever good you spend, God knows it well.
-
274
Those who spend their wealth by night and by day, secretly and openly, will have their reward with their Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
-
275
Those who consume usury will not stand except as one stands who has been driven to madness by Satan’s touch. That is because they say, “Trade is just like usury.” But God has made trade lawful and usury unlawful. So whoever receives an admonition from his Lord and desists may keep what is past, and his affair rests with God. But whoever returns [to it]—they are the companions of the Fire; they will abide in it forever.
-
276
God wipes out usury and makes charity grow. And God does not love any sinful disbeliever.
-
277
Indeed, those who believe, do righteous deeds, keep up the prayer and give the alms will have their reward with their Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
-
278
O you who believe, be mindful of God and give up what remains of usury, if you are believers.
-
279
If you do not, then be warned of war from God and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal; you will neither wrong nor be wronged.
-
280
If [the debtor] is in hardship, then [let there be] a delay until a time of ease. But to remit it as charity is better for you, if only you knew.
-
281
And guard yourselves against a Day when you will be returned to God. Then every soul will be paid in full for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.
-
282
O you who believe, when you contract a debt for a fixed term, write it down. Let a scribe write it down between you with justice, and let no scribe refuse to write as God has taught him. So let him write, and let the debtor dictate, and let him be mindful of God, his Lord, and not leave anything out of it. If the debtor is feeble-minded or weak, or unable to dictate himself, then let his guardian dictate with justice. And call two witnesses from among your men; if there are not two men, then a man and two women from those you accept as witnesses, so that if one of the two [women] errs, the other can remind her. Let the witnesses not refuse when they are called. Do not be weary of writing it down, whether small or large, along with its term. That is more just in the sight of God, more upright as evidence, and more likely to prevent doubts among you—unless it is a transaction on the spot that you conduct between yourselves, in which case there is no blame on you if you do not write it down. Take witnesses when you trade with one another, and let no scribe or witness be harmed. If you do [so], it is wrongdoing on your part. Be mindful of God, and God teaches you. And God has knowledge of all things.
-
283
If you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then [let there be] a pledge taken in hand. But if one of you entrusts something to another, let the one who has been entrusted deliver his trust, and let him be mindful of God, his Lord. Do not conceal testimony; whoever conceals it, his heart is sinful. And God knows what you do.
-
284
To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Whether you reveal what is in your souls or conceal it, God will call you to account for it. Then He will forgive whomever He wills and punish whomever He wills. And God has power over all things.
-
285
The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. Each believes in God, His angels, His Books and His messengers. “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final return.”
-
286
God does not burden any soul beyond its capacity. In its favour is whatever good it has earned, and against it whatever evil it has incurred. “Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, do not lay upon us a burden like the one You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with what we have no strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against the disbelieving people.”
