- Bold, larger (ˈ) = say it strong and a little longer — the stressed syllable.
- Faint = weak and short (a reduced vowel). Don't give every syllable equal weight.
- Tiny 으 · 트 · 스 = barely voiced. English has no vowel there — stop on the consonant.

- Small f v θ ð r = sounds Korean doesn't have — f: upper teeth on the lower lip; v: the same, voiced; θ/ð: tongue tip between the teeth; r: tongue curled back, touching nothing.

Surah
About this surah
Classed as a Medinan sura, it opens by reminding people that they were all created from a single soul, then sets out duties toward orphans, rules on marriage and bridal gifts, and detailed shares of inheritance. It goes on to list the relationships in which marriage is forbidden, to describe how marital discord should be handled, and to urge kindness to parents, relatives and neighbours. The middle section calls for obedience to God and the Messenger, for fighting on behalf of the oppressed, sets compensation for killing by mistake and explains prayer while travelling or in danger. The hypocrites are criticised again and again. Believers are told to stand firm for justice even against themselves. The later part addresses the People of the Book, stating that Jesus was neither killed nor crucified and that God is one, not three. It closes with a ruling on inheritance between siblings.
- Rights of orphans and women
- Inheritance shares
- Standing firm for justice
- The hypocrites
- Statements about Jesus
The name It is called Women because many of its rulings, especially in the opening verses (1–35), concern women: marriage, bridal gifts, inheritance and family life.
-
1
O people, be mindful of your Lord, who created you from a single soul, created from it its mate, and from the two of them spread abroad many men and women. Be mindful of God, in whose name you make requests of one another, and [honour] the ties of kinship. God is ever watchful over you.
-
2
Give the orphans their property. Do not exchange the bad for the good, and do not consume their property by joining it to your own. That is truly a great sin.
-
3
If you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphans, then marry such women as seem good to you, two, three or four. But if you fear that you will not be fair [among them], then [marry only] one, or those whom your right hands possess. That is more likely to keep you from injustice.
-
4
Give women their bridal gifts as a free gift. But if they are pleased to give up some of it to you of their own accord, then enjoy it with pleasure and ease.
-
5
Do not hand over to the feeble-minded your property, which God has made a means of support for you; but provide for them from it, clothe them, and speak to them with kindness.
-
6
Test the orphans until they reach the age of marriage. Then, if you perceive sound judgement in them, hand their property over to them. Do not consume it wastefully and hastily before they grow up. Whoever is well-off should refrain [from it], and whoever is poor may take of it in a fair manner. When you hand their property over to them, have it witnessed in their presence. God is sufficient as the One who takes account.
-
7
For men there is a share of what parents and close relatives leave behind, and for women there is a share of what parents and close relatives leave behind, whether it be little or much: an ordained share.
-
8
When relatives, orphans and the needy are present at the division [of an inheritance], give them something from it and speak to them with kindness.
-
9
Let those be fearful who, if they themselves left weak offspring behind, would fear for them. So let them be mindful of God and speak what is right.
-
10
Those who consume the property of orphans unjustly are only swallowing fire into their bellies, and they will burn in a blazing Fire.
-
11
God instructs you concerning your children: for the male, a share equal to that of two females. If there are [only] women, more than two, they receive two-thirds of what [the deceased] left; if there is only one, she receives half. Each of his parents receives a sixth of what he left, if he has a child. If he has no child and his parents are his heirs, his mother receives a third; but if he has brothers [or sisters], his mother receives a sixth. [All this is] after any bequest he has made or any debt. Your fathers and your sons: you do not know which of them is nearer to you in benefit. [This is] an obligation from God. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
-
12
You receive half of what your wives leave if they have no child; but if they have a child, you receive a quarter of what they leave, after any bequest they have made or any debt. They receive a quarter of what you leave if you have no child; but if you have a child, they receive an eighth of what you leave, after any bequest you have made or any debt. If a man or a woman leaves an inheritance and has neither parent nor child, but has a brother or a sister, each of the two receives a sixth; if they are more than that, they share in a third, after any bequest made or any debt, without harm being done [to the heirs]. [This is] an instruction from God. God is All-Knowing, Most Forbearing.
-
13
These are the limits set by God. Whoever obeys God and His Messenger, He will admit him into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding there forever. That is the great triumph.
-
14
But whoever disobeys God and His Messenger and oversteps His limits, He will admit him into a Fire, abiding there forever, and for him there is a humiliating punishment.
-
15
As for those of your women who commit an indecency, call four witnesses from among you against them. If they testify, confine the women to their houses until death takes them or God makes a way for them.
-
16
And the two among you who commit it, punish them both. But if they repent and mend their ways, leave them alone. God is ever Accepting of repentance, Most Merciful.
-
17
Repentance [accepted] by God is only for those who do evil out of ignorance and then repent soon after. It is to them that God turns in forgiveness. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
-
18
Repentance is not for those who go on doing evil deeds until, when death comes to one of them, he says, ‘Now I repent,’ nor for those who die as disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful punishment.
-
19
O you who believe, it is not lawful for you to inherit women against their will, nor to hold them back so as to take away part of what you have given them, unless they commit a flagrant indecency. Live with them in kindness. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike something in which God has placed much good.
-
20
If you wish to take one wife in place of another, and you have given one of them a great heap [of wealth], take nothing of it back. Would you take it by slander and manifest sin?
-
21
And how could you take it, when you have been intimate with one another and they have taken from you a firm covenant?
-
22
Do not marry women whom your fathers married, except what is already past. That was an indecency, a hateful thing, and an evil way.
-
23
Forbidden to you are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your fathers' sisters, your mothers' sisters, your brothers' daughters, your sisters' daughters, your mothers who nursed you, your sisters through nursing, your wives' mothers, and your stepdaughters in your care, born of wives with whom you have consummated marriage (but if you have not consummated marriage with them, there is no blame on you), and the wives of your sons who are from your own loins; and [forbidden is] that you take two sisters together, except what is already past. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
24
Also [forbidden are] married women, except those whom your right hands possess. [This is] God's decree for you. Lawful to you is all beyond these, that you seek [wives] with your wealth in honest wedlock, not in fornication. So to those of them whom you have enjoyed [in marriage], give their dowries as an obligation. There is no blame on you in what you mutually agree upon after the obligation [has been fixed]. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
-
25
Whoever among you lacks the means to marry free believing women, [let him marry] from the believing maidservants whom your right hands possess. God knows best about your faith; you are from one another. So marry them with the permission of their people and give them their dowries in fairness, as chaste women, not committing fornication nor taking secret lovers. Once they are married, if they commit an indecency, they receive half the punishment of free women. That is for whoever among you fears falling into hardship; but to be patient is better for you. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
26
God wishes to make [things] clear to you, to guide you to the ways of those who came before you, and to turn to you in mercy. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
-
27
God wishes to turn to you in mercy, but those who follow their desires wish you to stray far away.
-
28
God wants to make things lighter for you, since the human being was made weak.
-
29
O you who believe, do not consume one another's wealth wrongfully, unless it is trade by mutual consent among you. And do not kill yourselves. God is ever Most Merciful to you.
-
30
Whoever does that in aggression and injustice, We will cast him into a Fire. And that is easy for God.
-
31
If you avoid the major sins you are forbidden, We will wipe out your misdeeds and admit you through a gate of honour.
-
32
Do not covet that by which God has favoured some of you over others. For men there is a share of what they have earned, and for women there is a share of what they have earned. Ask God of His bounty. God has full knowledge of all things.
-
33
For everyone We have appointed heirs to what parents and close relatives leave behind. As for those with whom you have made a pledge, give them their share. God is witness over all things.
-
34
Men are guardians over women, because God has favoured some of them over others and because they spend of their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [their husbands'] absence what God would have them guard. As for those from whom you fear defiance, admonish them, then leave them alone in bed, then strike them. But if they obey you, do not seek a way against them. God is Most High, Most Great.
-
35
If you fear a rift between the two, appoint an arbiter from his family and an arbiter from hers. If they both desire reconciliation, God will bring about harmony between them. God is All-Knowing, All-Aware.
-
36
Worship God and do not associate anything with Him. Be good to parents, to relatives, orphans and the needy, to the neighbour who is a relative and the neighbour who is a stranger, to the companion at your side, to the traveller, and to those whom your right hands possess. God does not love anyone who is arrogant and boastful,
-
37
those who are stingy and urge others to be stingy, and hide what God has given them of His bounty. We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.
-
38
And [nor does He love] those who spend their wealth to be seen by people, and do not believe in God or the Last Day. Whoever has Satan for a companion, what an evil companion he has!
-
39
What harm would it have done them to believe in God and the Last Day and spend of what God has provided for them? God knows them well.
-
40
God does not wrong [anyone] even by the weight of an atom. If there is a good deed, He multiplies it and grants from Himself a great reward.
-
41
So how will it be when We bring from every community a witness, and bring you as a witness against these?
-
42
On that Day those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger will wish that the earth were levelled over them, and they will not be able to hide a single word from God.
-
43
O you who believe, do not approach the prayer while you are intoxicated, until you know what you are saying, nor while in a state of major impurity, except when passing through, until you have bathed. If you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you has come from relieving himself, or you have touched women, and you find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe your faces and hands [with it]. God is ever Pardoning, Most Forgiving.
-
44
Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Book? They purchase error and wish that you too would stray from the way.
-
45
God knows your enemies best. God is sufficient as a protector, and God is sufficient as a helper.
-
46
Among those who are Jews are some who twist words from their proper places and say, ‘We hear and we disobey,’ and ‘Hear, may you not be made to hear,’ and ‘Ra‘ina,’ twisting their tongues and attacking the religion. If they had said, ‘We hear and we obey,’ and ‘Listen,’ and ‘Look upon us,’ it would have been better for them and more upright. But God has cursed them for their disbelief, so they do not believe, except a few.
-
47
O you who were given the Book, believe in what We have sent down, confirming what you already have, before We obliterate faces and turn them backward, or curse them as We cursed the people of the Sabbath. And the command of God is always carried out.
-
48
God does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives whatever is less than that to whom He wills. Whoever associates partners with God has indeed fabricated a tremendous sin.
-
49
Have you not seen those who claim purity for themselves? Rather, it is God who purifies whom He wills, and they will not be wronged even by the thread of a date-stone.
-
50
See how they invent lies about God! That alone is enough as a manifest sin.
-
51
Have you not considered those who received a share of the Book? They put their faith in idols and false gods, and they tell the disbelievers, ‘You are on a better-guided path than the believers.’
-
52
Those are the ones whom God has cursed, and whomever God curses, you will find no helper for him.
-
53
Or do they have a share of the kingdom? If so, they would not give people even the speck on a date-stone.
-
54
Or do they envy people for what God has given them of His bounty? We gave the family of Abraham the Book and wisdom, and We gave them a mighty kingdom.
-
55
Among them were some who believed in it, and some who turned away from it. Hell is sufficient as a blaze.
-
56
Those who disbelieve in Our signs, We will cast them into a Fire. Every time their skins are burnt through, We will replace them with other skins, so that they may taste the punishment. God is Almighty, All-Wise.
-
57
But those who believe and do righteous deeds, We will admit them into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding there forever. In them they will have purified spouses, and We will admit them into deep, abundant shade.
-
58
God commands you to render trusts to those to whom they are due, and when you judge between people, to judge with justice. Excellent is that with which God admonishes you. God is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
-
59
O you who believe, obey God and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. If you disagree about anything, refer it to God and the Messenger, if you believe in God and the Last Day. That is better and fairer in outcome.
-
60
Have you not seen those who claim that they believe in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down before you? They wish to seek judgement from false deities, though they were commanded to reject them. Satan wishes to lead them far astray.
-
61
When it is said to them, ‘Come to what God has sent down, and to the Messenger,’ you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion.
-
62
How will it be when a disaster strikes them because of what their own hands have sent ahead? Then they come to you swearing by God, ‘We intended nothing but good and reconciliation.’
-
63
They are the ones whose hearts God knows. So turn away from them, admonish them, and speak to them about themselves with words that reach deep.
-
64
We sent no messenger except to be obeyed by God's leave. If, when they had wronged themselves, they had come to you and asked God's forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found God Accepting of repentance, Most Merciful.
-
65
But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you judge in what is disputed between them, and then find in themselves no discomfort over what you have decided, and submit in full submission.
-
66
If We had ordained for them, ‘Kill yourselves,’ or ‘Leave your homes,’ they would not have done it, except a few of them. Yet had they done what they were admonished to do, it would have been better for them and more strengthening [in faith].
-
67
And then We would surely have given them a great reward from Ourselves,
-
68
and We would surely have guided them to a straight path.
-
69
Whoever obeys God and the Messenger will be with those whom God has blessed: the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous. What excellent companions they are!
-
70
Such is the bounty from God, and God is sufficient as the All-Knowing.
-
71
O you who believe, take your precautions, then go forth in detachments or go forth all together.
-
72
Among you is one who lags behind. If a disaster strikes you, he says, ‘God has been gracious to me, since I was not present with them.’
-
73
But if a bounty from God comes to you, he says, as though there had been no affection between you and him, ‘If only I had been with them, I would have achieved a great triumph!’
-
74
So let those who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter fight in the cause of God. Whoever fights in the cause of God and is killed or is victorious, We will give him a great reward.
-
75
And what is [the matter] with you that you do not fight in the cause of God and for the oppressed among men, women and children who say, ‘Our Lord, take us out of this town whose people are oppressors, and appoint for us from Yourself a protector, and appoint for us from Yourself a helper’?
-
76
Those who believe fight in the cause of God, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of false deities. So fight the allies of Satan. Indeed, the scheming of Satan is ever weak.
-
77
Have you not seen those to whom it was said, ‘Restrain your hands, establish the prayer and give the alms’? Then when fighting was ordained for them, a group of them feared people as they fear God, or even more. They said, ‘Our Lord, why have You ordained fighting for us? If only You had granted us a little more time!’ Say, ‘The enjoyment of this world is little, and the Hereafter is better for whoever is mindful of God, and you will not be wronged even by the thread of a date-stone.’
-
78
Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you are in towering fortresses. If some good comes to them, they say, ‘This is from God,’ and if some harm comes to them, they say, ‘This is from you.’ Say, ‘All is from God.’ What is wrong with these people, that they hardly understand anything said [to them]?
-
79
Whatever good befalls you is from God, and whatever harm befalls you is from yourself. We have sent you to people as a Messenger, and God is sufficient as a witness.
-
80
Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed God. As for whoever turns away, We have not sent you to be their keeper.
-
81
They say, ‘[We pledge] obedience.’ But when they leave your presence, a group of them plots by night something other than what you say. God records what they plot by night. So turn away from them and put your trust in God. God is sufficient as a guardian.
-
82
Do they not reflect upon the Quran? Had it been from anyone other than God, they would have found in it many contradictions.
-
83
When some news of security or of fear comes to them, they spread it about. Had they referred it to the Messenger and to those in authority among them, those of them who can investigate it would have understood it. Were it not for God's bounty upon you and His mercy, you would have followed Satan, all but a few.
-
84
So fight in the cause of God; you are responsible only for yourself. And urge on the believers. Perhaps God will restrain the might of those who disbelieve. God is stronger in might and more severe in punishment.
-
85
Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have a share of it, and whoever intercedes for an evil cause will bear a portion of it. God keeps watch over all things.
-
86
When you are greeted with a greeting, respond with a better one, or [at least] return it. God takes account of all things.
-
87
God: there is no god but He. He will surely gather you on the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. And who is more truthful in word than God?
-
88
What is [the matter] with you, that you are two factions concerning the hypocrites, when God has turned them back because of what they earned? Do you wish to guide those whom God has let go astray? Whomever God lets go astray, you will never find a way for him.
-
89
They wish that you would disbelieve as they have disbelieved, so that you would be alike. So do not take allies from among them until they emigrate in the cause of God. But if they turn away, seize them and kill them wherever you find them, and take no ally or helper from among them,
-
90
except those who join a people with whom you have a treaty, or who come to you with hearts reluctant to fight you or to fight their own people. Had God willed, He could have given them power over you, and they would have fought you. So if they withdraw from you and do not fight you, and offer you peace, then God has given you no way against them.
-
91
You will find others who wish to be safe from you and safe from their own people. Every time they are returned to temptation, they fall headlong into it. So if they do not withdraw from you, offer you peace and restrain their hands, then seize them and kill them wherever you overtake them. Against these We have given you clear authority.
-
92
It is not for a believer to kill a believer, except by mistake. Whoever kills a believer by mistake must free a believing slave and pay compensation to the victim's family, unless they forgo it as charity. If the victim was from a people hostile to you and was a believer, then [the penalty is] freeing a believing slave. If he was from a people with whom you have a treaty, then compensation must be paid to his family and a believing slave freed. Whoever cannot find [the means] must fast for two consecutive months, as repentance [accepted] by God. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
-
93
Whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, abiding there forever. God is angry with him, curses him, and has prepared for him a tremendous punishment.
-
94
O you who believe, when you go forth in the cause of God, make sure [of the facts], and do not say to one who offers you a greeting of peace, ‘You are not a believer,’ seeking the passing gains of this worldly life, for with God are abundant spoils. You yourselves were like that before, then God conferred His favour on you. So make sure [of the facts]. God is ever aware of what you do.
-
95
Those of the believers who stay behind, apart from those who are disabled, are not equal to those who strive in the cause of God with their wealth and their lives. God has raised those who strive with their wealth and their lives a degree above those who stay behind. To each God has promised the best [reward], but God has favoured those who strive over those who stay behind with a great reward:
-
96
degrees [of rank] from Him, and forgiveness and mercy. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
97
When the angels take the souls of those who wronged themselves, they will say, ‘What condition were you in?’ They will reply, ‘We were oppressed in the land.’ The angels will say, ‘Was God's earth not spacious enough for you to emigrate in it?’ Their refuge will be Hell, and what an evil destination!
-
98
Except the truly oppressed among men, women and children, who have no means [of escape] and are not guided to a way.
-
99
As for them, it may be that God will pardon them. God is ever Pardoning, Most Forgiving.
-
100
Whoever emigrates in the cause of God will find on earth many places of refuge and abundance. Whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to God and His Messenger, and then death overtakes him, his reward is assured with God. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
101
When you travel through the land, there is no blame on you if you shorten the prayer, if you fear that those who disbelieve may attack you. The disbelievers are your open enemy.
-
102
When you are among them and lead them in prayer, let one group of them stand with you, holding their weapons. When they have prostrated, let them take position behind you, and let another group that has not yet prayed come and pray with you, taking their precautions and their weapons. Those who disbelieve wish that you would neglect your weapons and your baggage, so that they could fall upon you in a single assault. There is no blame on you if you lay aside your weapons when you are troubled by rain or are ill, but take your precautions. God has prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.
-
103
When you have finished the prayer, remember God standing, sitting and lying on your sides. When you are secure again, establish the prayer [in full]. The prayer is a duty prescribed for the believers at fixed times.
-
104
Do not weaken in pursuing the enemy. If you are suffering, they too are suffering as you suffer, but you hope from God what they do not hope. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
-
105
We have sent down to you the Book with the truth, so that you may judge between people by what God has shown you. So do not be an advocate for the treacherous.
-
106
And ask God for forgiveness. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
107
Do not argue on behalf of those who betray themselves. God does not love anyone who is treacherous and sinful.
-
108
They hide [their deeds] from people, but they cannot hide from God. He is with them when they plot by night with words He does not approve. God encompasses all that they do.
-
109
There you are! You have argued on their behalf in the life of this world, but who will argue with God on their behalf on the Day of Resurrection, or who will be their defender?
-
110
Whoever does evil or wrongs himself, and then asks God's forgiveness, will find God Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
111
Whoever earns a sin earns it only against himself. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
-
112
Whoever earns a fault or a sin and then throws the blame on an innocent person has burdened himself with slander and manifest sin.
-
113
Were it not for God's bounty upon you and His mercy, a group of them would have resolved to mislead you. But they mislead none but themselves, and they cannot harm you in the least. God has sent down to you the Book and wisdom, and taught you what you did not know. God's bounty upon you is great.
-
114
There is no good in much of their secret talk, except for one who enjoins charity, or what is right, or reconciliation between people. Whoever does that seeking God's pleasure, We will give him a great reward.
-
115
Whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him, and follows a way other than that of the believers, We will leave him to what he has turned to, and burn him in Hell. What an evil destination!
-
116
God does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives whatever is less than that to whom He wills. Whoever associates partners with God has strayed far astray.
-
117
Instead of Him they invoke only female deities, and they invoke only a rebellious Satan,
-
118
whom God has cursed. He said, ‘I will surely take of Your servants an appointed share.
-
119
I will surely mislead them, fill them with vain desires, and command them so that they slit the ears of cattle, and command them so that they alter God's creation.’ Whoever takes Satan as a protector instead of God has suffered a manifest loss.
-
120
He makes them promises and fills them with vain desires, but Satan promises them nothing but delusion.
-
121
For such people, their refuge will be Hell, and they will find no escape from it.
-
122
But those who believe and do righteous deeds, We will admit them into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding there forever. [That is] God's promise in truth, and who is more truthful in speech than God?
-
123
It will not be according to your wishful thinking, nor according to the wishful thinking of the People of the Book. Whoever does evil will be repaid for it, and he will find for himself no protector or helper besides God.
-
124
Whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer, such people will enter the Garden and will not be wronged even by the speck on a date-stone.
-
125
Who is better in religion than one who submits his face to God while doing good, and follows the way of Abraham, upright in faith? God took Abraham as an intimate friend.
-
126
To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. God encompasses all things.
-
127
They ask you for a ruling concerning women. Say, ‘God gives you a ruling concerning them, as does what is recited to you in the Book about orphan women to whom you do not give what is prescribed for them while you desire to marry them, and about the weak among children, and that you stand firm for orphans with justice.’ Whatever good you do, God knows it fully.
-
128
If a woman fears ill-treatment or aversion from her husband, there is no blame on the two of them if they make peace between themselves by a settlement, and settlement is best. Souls are prone to greed. But if you do good and are mindful of God, God is ever aware of what you do.
-
129
You will never be able to be [perfectly] just between wives, however much you may wish it. So do not incline wholly [to one], leaving the other as if suspended. If you set things right and are mindful of God, God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
130
But if the two separate, God will enrich each of them from His abundance. God is All-Encompassing, All-Wise.

131
To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. We instructed those who were given the Book before you, and you as well, to be mindful of God. But if you disbelieve, then to God belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. God is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.
-
132
To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and God is sufficient as a guardian.
-
133
If He wills, He can do away with you, O people, and bring others [in your place]. God has full power to do that.
-
134
Whoever desires the reward of this world, [let him know that] with God is the reward of this world and of the Hereafter. God is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
-
135
O you who believe, stand firm for justice as witnesses for God, even if it be against yourselves, your parents or your relatives. Whether [the person] is rich or poor, God has the greater claim over them both. So do not follow your desires, lest you deviate [from justice]. If you distort [your testimony] or turn away [from it], God is ever aware of what you do.
-
136
O you who believe, believe in God and His Messenger, and the Book He has sent down to His Messenger, and the Book He sent down before. Whoever disbelieves in God, His angels, His Books, His messengers and the Last Day has strayed far astray.
-
137
Those who believe, then disbelieve, then believe, then disbelieve, and then increase in disbelief, God will never forgive them nor guide them to a way.
-
138
Give the hypocrites the tidings that for them there is a painful punishment:
-
139
those who take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do they seek honour with them? Surely all honour belongs to God.
-
140
He has already sent down to you in the Book that when you hear God's verses being denied and mocked, do not sit with them until they engage in some other talk; otherwise you would be like them. God will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers all together in Hell.
-
141
They are those who wait [to see what befalls] you. If you gain a victory from God, they say, ‘Were we not with you?’ But if the disbelievers have a share [of success], they say, ‘Did we not gain the upper hand over you, and yet protect you from the believers?’ God will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection, and God will never give the disbelievers a way over the believers.
-
142
The hypocrites seek to deceive God, but it is He who outwits them. When they stand up for the prayer, they stand lazily, showing off to people, and they remember God only a little,
-
143
wavering between this and that, belonging neither to these nor to those. Whomever God lets go astray, you will never find a way for him.
-
144
O you who believe, do not take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do you wish to give God a clear case against yourselves?
-
145
The hypocrites shall be in the deepest pit of the Fire, and you will not find anyone to help them,
-
146
except those who repent, mend their ways, hold fast to God, and make their religion sincerely for God alone. They will be with the believers, and God will give the believers a great reward.
-
147
Why would God punish you if you are grateful and believe? God is ever Appreciative, All-Knowing.
-
148
God does not love the public utterance of evil words, except by one who has been wronged. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
-
149
Whether you reveal a good deed or conceal it, or pardon an offence, God is ever Pardoning, All-Powerful.
-
150
Those who disbelieve in God and His messengers, and wish to separate God from His messengers, saying, ‘We believe in some and disbelieve in others,’ and wish to take a way in between,
-
151
they are the true disbelievers, and We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.
-
152
But those who believe in God and His messengers and make no distinction between any of them, He will give them their rewards. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
153
The People of the Book ask you to bring down to them a book from heaven. They asked Moses for something even greater than that, saying, ‘Show us God openly.’ So the thunderbolt struck them for their wrongdoing. Then they took the calf [for worship] after clear proofs had come to them, yet We pardoned that, and We gave Moses clear authority.
-
154
We raised the Mount above them because of their covenant, and We said to them, ‘Enter the gate bowing down,’ and We said to them, ‘Do not transgress on the Sabbath,’ and We took from them a firm covenant.
-
155
Then, because of their breaking their covenant, their denial of God's signs, their killing the prophets unjustly, and their saying, ‘Our hearts are sealed in wrappings,’ (rather, God has set a seal upon them because of their disbelief, so they do not believe, except a few)
-
156
and because of their disbelief and their uttering against Mary a monstrous slander,
-
157
and their saying, ‘We killed the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the Messenger of God.’ They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them. Those who differ about it are in doubt about it; they have no knowledge of it except the following of conjecture. They certainly did not kill him.
-
158
Rather, God raised him up to Himself. God is Almighty, All-Wise.
-
159
There is none of the People of the Book but will surely believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them.
-
160
Because of wrongdoing on the part of the Jews, We made unlawful for them good things that had been lawful for them, and because of their often hindering [people] from the way of God,
-
161
and their taking usury though they had been forbidden it, and their consuming people's wealth wrongfully. We have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
-
162
But those of them who are firmly grounded in knowledge, and the believers, believe in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down before you; and [especially] those who establish the prayer, and those who give the alms, and those who believe in God and the Last Day. To them We will give a great reward.
-
163
We have given revelation to you as We gave revelation to Noah and the prophets after him. And We gave revelation to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, and to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron and Solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms.
-
164
And [We sent] messengers whose stories We have already related to you, and messengers whose stories We have not related to you. And God spoke to Moses directly.
-
165
Messengers bearing good tidings and giving warning, so that people would have no argument against God after the messengers. God is Almighty, All-Wise.
-
166
But God bears witness to what He has sent down to you; He sent it down with His knowledge. The angels also bear witness, and God is sufficient as a witness.
-
167
Those who disbelieve and hinder [others] from the way of God have strayed far astray.
-
168
Those who disbelieve and do wrong, God will never forgive them, nor will He guide them to any road
-
169
except the road to Hell, abiding there forever. And that is easy for God.
-
170
O people, the Messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe; it is better for you. But if you disbelieve, then to God belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
-
171
O People of the Book, do not go to excess in your religion, and say nothing about God but the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of God and His Word, which He conveyed to Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers, and do not say ‘Three.’ Desist; it is better for you. God is only one God. Glory be to Him, far above having a son! To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and God is sufficient as a guardian.
-
172
The Messiah would never disdain to be a servant of God, nor would the angels who are brought near [to Him]. Whoever disdains His worship and is arrogant, He will gather them all to Himself.
-
173
As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, He will pay them their rewards in full and give them more from His bounty. But as for those who are disdainful and arrogant, He will punish them with a painful punishment, and they will find for themselves no protector or helper besides God.
-
174
O people, a clear proof has come to you from your Lord, and We have sent down to you a clear light.
-
175
As for those who believe in God and hold fast to Him, He will admit them into mercy from Himself and bounty, and guide them to Himself on a straight path.
-
176
They ask you for a ruling. Say, ‘God gives you a ruling concerning one who leaves neither parent nor child. If a man dies having no child but having a sister, she receives half of what he leaves; and he inherits from her if she has no child. If there are two sisters, they receive two-thirds of what he leaves. If there are siblings, men and women, the male receives the share of two females.’ God makes [this] clear to you lest you go astray. God has full knowledge of all things.
